Correction: The conference feature for Tokbox (send url) actually allows for a large numer of participants in the video conference. We've siin it easily support 20 or more participants.

I just wanted to clarify that Tokbox does have a Community Manager:) I am active in the blogosphere, Twitter, Facebook, our Public Posts & Customer Service Channel.

While twenty is going to be a good guide for number of people in a conference, we would generally recommend twenty or less because of noise and screen size issues (we will, of course, see if this can be improved.

20-25 works quite well. While you could do more, you're going to run into issues with screen size & ambient noise when you get over the 20-25 range.

I agree:) The only difference is that the distribution of Twitter is different than the more established Messaging services & truly sits on the web as an application (not a download, etc.).

I am using Twitter right now, after a long hiatus, and I am still on the fence. But I don't think it resembles blogging in many, many ways...

Sheesh...what are people going to talk about if they follow the list? Just kidding...

My personal take as a Twitter novice....
I don't focus too much on number of followers (I do check, obviously). I don't really pay attention to people that stop following me that much because I look at it as a free will type of thing, much like how some relationships are transient in real life.

In the order of things, here's what I would be most concerned about:
1. Losing a friend (real, not virtual).
2. Losing a customer at any of the services I've worked at.
3. A follower.

Conversing with all of your followers, notably those that have tens of thousands, is probably not all that reachable by any single human being. Not responding to a direct inquiry, IMHO, is probably a lot worse than not sending a message to every person directly.

Understood. Just mentioning that there are more important things to lose than a follower:) I only mention politics sometimes on my Twitter account, largely due to the fact that politics can be like talking to wall (nothing I will say will change a person's affiliation with a particular topic). The same goes with religion, which is something that can be a very divisive topic.

I actually think that folks that have 10k+ followers are in for one hell of a ride. T

he best advice you gave is to be personable, which I wholly agree with. A simple response back to a Tweet, or any other medium, is appreciated by the person that received your response.

I don't know how the people who follow 50k manage to do it! It's like having a conversation with an entire small city!

Nor do I! While I have engaged with a large number of communities in the past, that number is still quite large to me. Props to the folks that can do so to some degree.

Politics and religion: Even if I have my own views, I am personally loathe to do so in any environment that would affect my relationship with my employer. I am actually a weird hybrid when it comes to politics (Democrat and Republican), and perhaps even more strange when it comes to religion (largely Buddhist in thought, terrible in practice, and practitioner of the Judeo-Christian ethics that permeate Western culture).

In short:

The larger bloggers have become exactly what they claimed not to be. Some of the larger blogs are businesses, no different than the NYTimes or any other medium.

The focus has been on expanding distribution, be it via the new tools that enhance the blogging medium or some other method (Twitter, FriendFeed, etc.).

Focus has been on friends (twitter, facebook, friendfeed, etc.). This is the old quantity over quality argument...

Tech blogs, in particular, all tend to gravitate towards the same topics. See below:

Microsoft xxx
Google yyy
Twitter zzz
Yahoo and Microsoft xxx, yyy, zzz
Apple aaa, Iphone this.

This is honestly the first post of yours I've read in a bit, for a wide variety of reasons. If some of the tech bloggers focused on the reason(s) why they started blogging to begin with, I am certain that many things would change for the better (simply for the love of talking about the things that they love) . Right now, and I say this with all honesty, the average person probably questions the honesty of many of the blogs and/or the intent behind a post of any sort.

And, without sounding like a complete ass, the average person only cares about the following:

1. Does it make my life simpler?
2. Does it help me keep in contact with the ones I love?
3. Does it make my life better?
4. Can I still send email?

Too many of the technologies launched these days are more advanced than the average person cares to use. I have a wife, one that is not a techie at all, and she questions why we spend so much time on things not connected to establishing real relationships with real people. She almost crapped her pants when two of my friends, and yours truly, were stuck on laptops not talking to one another whilst in the lush beauty of Koh Samui, Thailand.

Even if she (my wife) isn't as tech smart as I am, I am starting to actually question if she might be smarter than I am.

I just wanted to add that we recently launched a Twitter "tweet" option, which means you can send the url out to your Twitter contacts very easily.
