in MSI X320 looks like a MacBook Air, functions like a netbook on Liliputing
Apple is selling refurb Macbook Airs for $999.99 right now. This knockoff needs to be substantially cheaper than that for it to succeed, imo.

Bobsmith So you get to buy one that someone else threw away, and it still costs more, and has fewer ports, than this MSI notebook. Plus, there's the simple fact that this isn't going to take away customers from Apple, and Apple isn't going to take customers from MSI. People have more or less all made their decision. Either they're OSX people, Windows people, Linux people, or god forbid BEOS people. Regardless, Windows users, even with boot camp, aren't going to buy the Air. Though I have seen a lot of MSI Winds turned into hackintoshes. That might happen with this one, too.

Slot loaded DVD drives are an expensive component ... That being said, Asus should have a more expensive model with one.

in Open Box Asus Eee PC 1000H for just $340 on Liliputing
I got my Eee 1000H from mwave in an open-box deal, for $359 a few months ago. However, let me just say, I think the reason it was returned was because the keyboard has a nasty glitch that causes double-key entry randomly (like I type "Hello" and it comes out "Heello"). I was told that it was covered under the manufacturer's warranty and could not be returned. So I sent the Eee to Asus for repair, following their RMA procedure, they apparently did not feel that my problem was serious enough to fix, and sent it back to me without fixing it. So, just a word of caution about open box, you might end up with a previously returned item that has some sort of problem.

Dave-o There are tonnes of things that can go wrong with the 1000h/1000ha. I bought one, had the double tap keys (heello happened a lot!) and screen flicker at low brightness every time the hard drive LED flashed. I RMA'd it, and got sent another one. This one has no screen flicker, but the sensitive key problem remains. Apparently, that is *really* common, but easy to fix with some windows filterkey settings... (of course, windows only, backtrack still has some issues).

Anyways, my point is that open box online purchases are a bad idea. If you have a problem, AND it is covered by warranty (or RMA), then you have to ship it back and hope they send you a better one.

Why else would an online retailer have open box computers? Returns! Why else would they have returns? ... Problems!

I would buy open box from a big-box store. No problem - I could inspect the computer, play with it a bit, and make sure it was peachy. But even though newegg is awesome, this is a hassle you don't want... The chance of having a problem is high enough that you're better off spending the extra on a new one, since you'll spend the same on shipping when you return the open box for replacement/repairs.

Having said that, I love my 1000ha. It has replaced my primary laptop simply because it is so small, yet still so easy to use. Battery life isn't as good as my workhorse laptop, but it has a 12 cell extended battery which gets about 7-8 hours. This 6-cell lappy gets about 4-5, depending on settings ... but also charges in half the time!
DougC3 Ouch! The field of customer service is wide open :)

The only way you could run XP on one of these (if at all possible) would be through painfully slow emulation.

in Closer look at the Eee PC S101 and Eee Top all-in-one on Liliputing
For some reason I just don't see the appeal of touchscreen PCs. Seems like more work than just using a mouse or trackpad ... For pocket computers it saves space if you can eliminate the keyboard, but on a PC it just adds cost and doesn't seem to have any benefit outside of very specific applications.

DougC3 I had the same thoughts today while reading about HP's TouchSmart desktop PC and upcomming full size laptop with giant finger icons covering the screen. I think these are maybe a marketing thing because of the popularity of the iPhone.
But lots of netbook fans like to add touchscreens just because they can and for whatever special purpose, like maybe ebook reading, etc.

in Will the netbook revolution lead to a rise in Windows CE handhelds? on Liliputing
I've owned a large variety of Windows CE devices, older Pocket PCs and a newer Windows Mobile smartphone. Just from my experiences, I wouldn't describe any of these devices as stable or reliable in the same way that a Windows XP machine is. Part of the problem may have been that a lot of these devices relied on battery backed up RAM rather than flash memory. Also, I agree with Brad about the pricing ... For anyone to seriously consider one of these it'd have to be half the price of a low-end netbook.

DougC3 I think the newer WM devices with flash memory are much more stable than the ones which relied on battery powered RAM. Also, some of the newer utilities like SKTools make it easier to keep them running smoothly. With it, you can even boot in protected mode, remove malfunctioning software, and avoid a hard reset.

in Will Apple build a netbook, and what would it look like? on Liliputing
I've been wondering about this lately too. I think a $599 MacBook Mini would be wildly popular, but it could hurt sales of the $1099 MacBook too much (which surely has a better profit margin, real dollars and percentage than a netbook). In the past Apple has been the first to show off new Intel chips, maybe they could stick a dual-core Atom into a notebook and sell it for closer to $800. Another product that Apple has that really needs a refresh is the Mac mini, and something like the Eee Box could be a newer and even smaller replacement. At the same time they could probably eliminate the Apple TV console and gear this new mini towards media center usage. Just my thoughts here, I don't really know anything :)

in 10400 mAh battery for the Eee PC 701/900 series on Liliputing
I also have ordered from dealextreme dozens of times ... They always deliver and have good customer service. The quality of the products they sell can be a bit of a mixed bag though, I've gotten two defective iPod charging/sync cables from them. Whatever they sell is the same cheap stuff you see on eBay, usually sold for a lower price.

in Lenovo IdeaPad S10 netbook reviewed on Liliputing
I was quick to pre-order an S10, but when it became clear that Lenovo had no idea when it was shipping, I canceled. I picked up an open box Asus 1000H/XP for $359, cheaper than the S10 and with a better battery. Lenovo's loss I guess, but they really mismanaged the launch of this product in a way that leaves me wondering if I can trust them to make a decent product. It does look good though, imo, better looking than the Asus 1000 or Acer One.

Dave Zatz Agreed, it does look sharp. But after Laptop's article, I just canceled my (delayed) order. I can live with the battery life, but the reason I'm getting a 10" screen was for the larger keyboard. "Cramped" doesn't work for me. Guess I'll be keeping an eye out for deals on a 6 cell Eee 1000H or MSI Wind. Unless Apple does something crazy in the next few weeks...
iden i think thinkpad works better...

in How to make a Razorbook/Alpha 400 more useful on Liliputing
The version of this notebook that Geeks is selling doesn't seem to include WIFI. They also sell the 2G EEE for $259 ... At only $59 difference between the EEE and the Razorbook, I can't see why anyone would want a dodgy no-name brand laptop with strange architecture to save just a few bucks.
Steven522 Well you're comparing a new to a refurb, but a new 2G is still just $299. I was interested until I saw that the specs were missing wifi. I might could live with the other specs as a "hobby" machine to experiment with, but not without wifi built in.

in O’Reilly vs. Olbermann Through Thursday, May 15 on TVbytheNumbers
I'm somebody who watches both shows occasionally. Watching Olbermann's show for the last year and O'Reilly's show for over 6 years now. In my opinion, O'Reilly's show has changed from a political talk show into something that is just his personal soapbox. It's not really about politics at all anymore ... O'Reilly is obsessed with maintaining his image as a "culture warrior". His age really shows when he talks about things related to the Internet, he seems to have no grip on reality (the amount of time he spends compaining about liberal blogs and youtube videos is getting ridiculous).

On the other hand, even if you don't agree with a word Olbermann is saying, at least he is talking about things that matter. For me, I'm interested in politics, the presidential horse race, etc. and Countdown is a much better show.
