... invitations, the officiant's fee/tip, the marriage license fee, transportation (limo, e.g.), wedding party gifts (often jewelry for the gals, cuff links/flask for guys), tux rental... i know i'll think of more later.
DJ quality can vary WILDLY -- get references and a song list from any prospective person.
as for photography, inexpensive disposable cameras on every table can yield very fun, casual, and blackmail-worthy ;) shots, that will mean a lot more to you than those taken by "some guy."

when my best friend, a photographer, got married, she smartly hired a photographer and didn't try to do it herself. well, at least that was the professed plan. in reality, at the reception, "Leona" became a raging beeyotch and fully usurped the hired guy's role, by setting up all the shots -- "YOU! family of the groom! over here, NOW!" -- and even telling the poor guy what f-stop to use. she was psychotic. try and smile when you're getting yelled at. good times.

centerpieces can be fun because you can arrange with the caterer to put a sticker or something under one plate per table, and the person who sits there 'wins' the centerpiece to take home. just make sure the DJ/MC announces the plan before the meal is served!

i've seen cool/pretty wedding parties where the couple asks the 'maids to choose a dress they already have or can easily afford, with the only caveat being color. one wedding they all wore navy blue; another wedding each 'maid was a different pastel color, which was actually surprisingly cohesive and lovely. and not a giant butt-bow in the bunch.

and let's face it, no one gives a crap what the 'maids are wearing on their feet. we're all taking our shoes off at the reception anyway, right?

1. when i was about six, i was in the basement with my mom while she was doing the laundry. her wedding dress was hanging from a pipe nearby. "why did you choose a yellow dress instead of a white dress, mommy?" i asked. she answered, "well, it USED to be white, but it's been hanging there without a bag for seven years..."

2. a high school acquaintance loved her wedding dress so much, she addended it with medievel accessories and wore it as a halloween costume for five years, until she couldn't cram herself in it anymore!

i had to stop attending my 11-yr-old stepson's Pop Warner games because of the brutal verbal eviscerations i had to witness. these were CHILDREN, being screamed at by adults, many of whom were the parents. it was nauseating.

there are some seriously screwed-up and PATHETIC adult men who have to dump abuse on children who are playing a GAME, in order to exorcise the demons of their own lost youth.

i lived in santa cruz for a decade. that slug logo was on EVERYTHING! it was, however, pretty cool to see those neon-yellow slugs for real, in the woods surrounding the campus.

Not to sound like a jerk, but maybe you should do some reading on what kinds of wine go with what kinds of food before reviewing them. A sweet muscat would never go with chicken (especially seasoned with Old Bay), nor with overpowering fruit like strawberries or pineapple. The label suggestion for a spicy Asian (or any other ethnicity) dish should have been taken into consideration when you made your food choice, as it's a wise one.

As for goat cheese, or any other cheeses, wine/cheese pairing is a learned skill, and again, one that should probably be researched before attempting to review a wine here.

Just a suggestion for your future blogs.

i COMPLETELY agree about the service at common man. i was extremely pleased with how attentive, friendly and accurate my server was. she was very nice and accommodating -- even getting my, er, rotund friend a bigger chair. the food was great, but the service really sold it for me.

What a lousy situation for you, Maria. I can relate, as I was a stepmother at one point. This is less of a 'binky' issue and more of a 'dual households' issue, I think.

It's VERY difficult to get any sort of behavior under control when all parents aren't on the same team. His mom's reluctance to suck it up and live through "the screaming" for a few nights is not acceptable, in my opinion. The very fact that he's fine at your house without it should give her the strength to hold her ground. And now that he's having dental, speech and social problems at school should override any wishy-washiness on her part to make him give it up once and for all.

Keep having his father (as you know, anything YOU say will be met with resistance and resentment just because of your role in the family) talk to his son's mother, and keep on her to help him break this bad habit.
