Sounds like they play the Redhawks again for the first playoff game Wednesday. They are the best team we've seen so far out here. Heavy hitters. The blasted a two-run homer off Brandon, and a line-drive at his head on the mound right after that early in the game. Louis Tarantino ripped a homerun for us as well. The Grizzlies played very well in all three games. Very few errors. The Redhawks are beatable.

Heading down to see the arch and riverfront today. Will keep posting throughout the week.

-Bob Hammerstrom

Re: Grizzlies celebrate a birthday at Hooters

Thanks Mike. I'll fix that ASAP. I thought he had a few more grays than a 14-year-old. Happy 15th Addison, you old man.

-Bob

Re: Nashua Telegraph Blogs

These are some great points you make Bill. I'm fortunate not to have to push my son, Brandon to play sports and keep active. He lives for them, and has since he was young (I can't say little, cause he never was!). He's not the over-aggressive type that has to win everything, but he does enjoy the competition.

When he has a free night, he asks me to take him to the baseball field to hit some balls, or play catch with the football in our yard. Occasionally, I've had to say no, when he has been practicing all day, and I feel his body needs the break to recover and heal.

Saturday will be his first high school scrimmage against Souhegan H.S. at Memorial in Manchester. It will be interesting to watch him out there. People have often asked him if he plays football, since he is so big, and he's always said, "No, I play soccer in the fall." This year he is trying football. His size will help him as a QB and linebacker, but he still needs to figure out how not to throw a pass like a fastball!

-Bob Hammerstrom

Re: Johnny Damon may return to Fenway?

Yes, I'd like to say it was just a test to see who is reading the blog, but it wasn't. Both are former Red Sox. Both left on a somewhat sour note. And, as the Red Sox are as glad to have gotten rid of Manny, and bring in Bay, as the Dodgers are to have aquired Ramirez.

Sorry about the confusion, and thanks to those that made me aware of the error.

-Bob

Re: Johnny Damon may return to Fenway?

Thanks Christy! I've been writing this blog from about a year now, working as a photojournalist in NH. My son, Brandon is "Hammer" II. As a freshman, he's a little bigger that I was as a senior.

Not sure the voice box could do those sirens again. Sure was fun doing those from the benches on Main Street, watching the drivers hit the brakes!

Take Care!

"Hammer"

Re: Playing up in high school sports

Good points here. My son, Brandon doesn't look like most freshman. He would easily pass for a college student, with his facial hair and size.

Although he says he feels more challenge playing with the JV (a few minutes in a game), Brandon doesn't like riding the bench. He's the kind of player that wants to be out there making things happen.

So, for him, playing up is just a chance to get work with the older players. The JV coach asked him to play on both teams, so he did. He doesn't really get enough playing time in practice or games to improve his skills. Thus, he needs the playing time on the freshman team to improve those.

-Bob Hammerstrom

Re: Playing up in high school sports

Thanks for commenting Kris. I took the photo, as I have for many of the topics of this blog. Memorial freshmen are all done for this season. They were beat in their first playoff game by Keene. There are three freshman, including my son, Brandon who have been brought up to play JV games lately. They practice with them as well.
I agree with your comment about individual freshmen talent. But, in this team's case, they could play very well without the freshmen. The younger Crusaders players are brought up to work against the older players to develop and challenge them at a higher level. The three that have been "playing up" have also been contributing to the score and rebounds as well.
-Bob

Re: Tips on photographing outdoor sports

Sure can, I suggest using fast shutter speeds, a polarizer filter over your lens and get in close with an underwater camera, or underwater camera housing for your camera. You can also use an aquarium if you're really careful, and a risk-taker.

Fast shutter speeds freeze the action and water. The filter will cut down on the glass from the sun. If it's a cloudy day, it's not needed.

Try following one kayak, canoe, raft, or whatever you're photographing. Don't zoom while you're shooting, just set the lens (if it's a zoom) to a certain length and pan the camera while following them down the river.

Good luck!

-Bob

Re: Skittle Shoes….Do they make for a faster game?

I have to admit, I was a parent who fell for the "I have to have my name printed on my basketball shoes dad" syndrome. I did it long ago at a park in Fergus Falls, MN. I left an entire bag of gear on a picnic table, and walked off with my camera and the lens on it, after photographing some people for the paper I worked at there. Thankfully for me, the people I shot found it and brought it to the Sheriff's Department.

I also had a co-worker at the Sentinel & Enterprise in Fitchburg, Mass., that left her entire bag of equipment on a street corner in the middle of the night, while she was shooting for a day in the life of Leominster. When she returned ot the bag it was gone. Lucky for her a city worker picked it up and kept it safe until she called for it.

Dave's right, put your name on everything. Ya never know when it's gonna get left behind.

-Bob
