in nupepe on On AssignmentAs for the other words, "Kanakaloka" - sounds like a request for a 'Can of Cola' after partying too much over Memorial Day weekend.
I give up on "Kelepona," but the "hipa" is located above the 'lega!'

in Photo Tip #1 on Granite GeekI also had a co-worker at the Sentinel & Enterprise in Fitchburg, Mass., that left her entire bag of equipment on a street corner in the middle of the night, while she was shooting for a day in the life of Leominster. When she returned ot the bag it was gone. Lucky for her a city worker picked it up and kept it safe until she called for it.
Dave's right, put your name on everything. Ya never know when it's gonna get left behind.

in Tips on photographing outdoor sports on Raising AthletesFast shutter speeds freeze the action and water. The filter will cut down on the glass from the sun. If it's a cloudy day, it's not needed.
Try following one kayak, canoe, raft, or whatever you're photographing. Don't zoom while you're shooting, just set the lens (if it's a zoom) to a certain length and pan the camera while following them down the river.
Good luck!

in Playing up in high school sports on Raising AthletesI agree with your comment about individual freshmen talent. But, in this team's case, they could play very well without the freshmen. The younger Crusaders players are brought up to work against the older players to develop and challenge them at a higher level. The three that have been "playing up" have also been contributing to the score and rebounds as well.

in Playing up in high school sports on Raising AthletesAlthough he says he feels more challenge playing with the JV (a few minutes in a game), Brandon doesn't like riding the bench. He's the kind of player that wants to be out there making things happen.
So, for him, playing up is just a chance to get work with the older players. The JV coach asked him to play on both teams, so he did. He doesn't really get enough playing time in practice or games to improve his skills. Thus, he needs the playing time on the freshman team to improve those.

in Homecoming in a small town on Raising AthletesNot sure the voice box could do those sirens again. Sure was fun doing those from the benches on Main Street, watching the drivers hit the brakes!

in Nashua Telegraph Blogs on Raising AthletesThese are some great points you make Bill. I'm fortunate not to have to push my son, Brandon to play sports and keep active. He lives for them, and has since he was young (I can't say little, cause he never was!). He's not the over-aggressive type that has to win everything, but he does enjoy the competition.
When he has a free night, he asks me to take him to the baseball field to hit some balls, or play catch with the football in our yard. Occasionally, I've had to say no, when he has been practicing all day, and I feel his body needs the break to recover and heal.
Saturday will be his first high school scrimmage against Souhegan H.S. at Memorial in Manchester. It will be interesting to watch him out there. People have often asked him if he plays football, since he is so big, and he's always said, "No, I play soccer in the fall." This year he is trying football. His size will help him as a QB and linebacker, but he still needs to figure out how not to throw a pass like a fastball!

in On Assignment on On AssignmentI agree with Earl. Although my hands and lungs didn't benefit from the years of working with chemicals, there's nothing like watching those images appear on the printing paper under the dim yellow lights.
I still haven't seen an inkjet printer-generated black and white print, that will match the rich details and texture of Ilford Gallery paper - my all-time favorite.
If I didn't have a septic system, I would have a dark room still to dabble in.
The good ole' days!

in Grizzlies celebrate a birthday at Hooters on Raising AthletesThanks Mike. I'll fix that ASAP. I thought he had a few more grays than a 14-year-old. Happy 15th Addison, you old man.

in Nashua Telegraph Blogs on Raising AthletesThanks Connie. Sounds like they play the Redhawks again for the first playoff game Wednesday. They are the best team we've seen so far out here. Heavy hitters. The blasted a two-run homer off Brandon, and a line-drive at his head on the mound right after that early in the game. Louis Tarantino ripped a homerun for us as well. The Grizzlies played very well in all three games. Very few errors. The Redhawks are beatable.
Heading down to see the arch and riverfront today. Will keep posting throughout the week.
