Government is an organization with the monopoly on violence, and politicians are the people who control those who "are allowed" to inflict violence on others.
Even Somalia has a government, it's just spread out among tribes and gangs, each of which have the monopoly on violence in the area that they control. And those that control those tribes and gangs are politicians.

Re: Heartbroken

I presume you are aware that Ian Astbury of The Cult said on stage that they would be touring in 2008 in support of a reformed band whose two part name started with L and Z?

Re: Heartbroken

Who owns their rights though? Kudos on your cleverness and ability to figure that out on the spot in an interview setting.

I probably would have turned the question around on the interviewer and asked how resilient the bowling ball needed to be? Did it need to survive 10 floors? 15? Why were we doing the resiliency test in the first place? Developers who take the requirements at face value without understanding the motivation aren't nearly as valuable as the ones who can see past what is being asked for and find a simpler solution that delivers the underlying need.

If it turned out we just needed it to survive falling from 15 stories, I would have dropped one ball from the 15th floor window and if it survived it passed our test otherwise it didn't. One step, and we save a ball.

Re: Serve Well and Be Well Served

Should be a leaky condom ...

Re: Amanda on “Hannity” - FOX NEWS - Friday Feb 20, 2009

Great job Amanda! I'm not sure I've heard it.

I think the argument goes something like - I work for the evil profiteer who earns money off my labor. I am paid a fraction of what I produce, and the evil profiteer pockets the difference. So that evil profiteer is stealing from the sweat of my brow, and it is the duty of the government to seize those ill gotten gains and distribute them fairly and equitably.

Mind you I'm neither putting forth this argument nor saying that it is what you believe, but I'm pretty sure muirgeo believes it.

That's the only way I can see to rationalize government theft as a good thing.

Two wrongs make a right (assuming profit is theft and thus wrong).

Re: A Win-Win

You are the ones making excuses for profiteers who work by obsfucating price, demand and supply mechanisms. The status quo means my employer pays for a portion of my insurance, but won't allow me to cover my stepson. So I have a separate policy for him. The policy I have for myself and my wife is very expensive thanks to state regulations. I am not allowed to purchase insurance outside this state because Nanny tells me it's bad.

I'd be more than happy to take the money that my employer contributes to my plan and choose how to spend it myself.

But alas the tax structure makes that highly unlikely.

All these obstacles created by government, all these choices made for my by government, all these problems created by government, and it seems the only solution that we will see involves more government.

It's enough to drive a person insane!

Re: WOW: Twitter to Raise $100 Million in New Funding

I agree - hype does a lot for a company

Re: Fontes' Rants

Meh.

AVGN wannabe.
