in Colour me fascist on Paul Jacobson
Paul, I've read all the views I could find about this storm in a cup (if you'll excuse the term), and I have to side with your response as being the most logical; not to mention inherently honest (an important factor).

Ramon Thomas deserves as much thought and time as it takes to post a link to something I wrote about him 4 years ago, so I'll leave it at that.

in A different look on Paul Jacobson
I dig the new template, Georgia as a font always looks timeless compared to the usual Arial, Verdana, etc etc....

That, and the subtle shading of the header, which is quite stylish.

in Grabble: next generation South African search engine? on Paul Jacobson
I spend a lot of time fine-tuning SEO, and IMHO Grabble is the most accurate local engine by a longshot.

Seriously impressive.

in The solution to rush hour traffic. on Paul Jacobson
Or just live 600m from work, hehe...

It was really interesting hearing the stats about Jo'burg having more registered cars (length-wise, bumper-to-bumper) than actual paved road. No wonder the place gets jammed!

in Internet companies join the net neutrality debate on Paul Jacobson
This is a much more critical issue than most people realise. Ultimately, US legislation will have a substantial effect on the internet worldwide, not just over there.

It's definitely worthwhile voicing our support for neutrality wherever/whenever we can, although I'm not sure how much effect we can have as "foreigners"...

in Sorry, you can’t use your phone in a Telkom shop! on Paul Jacobson
Unreal.

Obviously the guard wouldn't have the faintest clue what the reasoning for this is (or would care to ever find out in the first place), but sheesh... Good to know - I think I've only been in a Telkom shop once before, and a while ago there was a cash-heist shootout in the one two floors below us, so I won't be visiting anytime soon!

in Announcement, I’m going to Google on Scobleizer
Had me worried there for a sec...

Luckily though, when I didn't see any mention of Chuck Norris, I knew it couldn't be real.

in Local initiative to ‘introduce’ blogging to South Africa on Paul Jacobson
I'm not a pessimist, seeing as launching online services like these are my business and livelihood - but quite frankly, I'm not too sure where they plan to fit into the picture...

The back-end of blogging has become a total commodity, with practically zero barriers to entry. Even the seriously savvy innovators in this space are struggling to differentiate themselves. No offense to the guys, but they're not tech-savvy to start off with (witness the use of poorly kerned JPEGs for the text of their navigation). Add the commodity factor, and I don't see success anytime soon... Sorry, I don't want to rain on their parade, but it's a classic case of "show me the money" (or where it's going to come from, at least).

in A personality split on Paul Jacobson
Hey Paul,

I've had thoughts along the same line as well recently - mostly when I feel like sharing something personal, but don't want to freak out my wide readership too much... People I would've never ever thought would, say to me "hey, I've been reading your blog!" - hmmmm... the effect has been that I've held off on these posts to be safe. It's a context thing, people often need to be weened off the narrow perception they have of a "personality".

Broadly speaking though, it's not a bad thing exposing people to all sides of your personality (within reason of course!), but I'm with you on the caution thing.

in Amazing new features of Windows Vista on Paul Jacobson
I'm actually planning to post about this at some stage...

During the holidays, I spent a bit of time playing around on my brother's 12" PowerBook (he works for MissingLink) - funnily enough, I'd say about 80% of the upcoming interface features of Vista are based at least partly on OSX's. I've been playing around with early versions of Vista, and it's not groundbreaking at all, but it's also what's behind the scenes where the major changes are...

As an MS insider, I know what's potting below-board, but it was really interesting to see the similarities either way!
