MySpace and Facebook (.com) are without a doubt the two most popular sites visited by our students (guessed at that at first, but verified it with proxy logs).

It's the cool, hip new "thing". I'm guilty of having my profile on both of them, but I don't regularly access either one of them. My fiancee (20 yr. old college student), however, is a complete "facebook addict". I've threatened to block her from facebook on our home network. =)

Nearly two months ago there was a nice little attack on MySpace. It was actually quite good, in my opinion, and well thought out. I consider the systems and networks there as "mine". If something happens to them, I take it personally -- I'm sure many others in similar positions feel the same way.

Outside of the school, however, I also do consulting on the side. At least 50% of this work is strictly security work and most of these jobs are not short, quick projects. Most of them are ongoing projects with no "end date" set, which may be why I feel differently than you do. In these cases, I am the security guy for these companies. Anything security related comes through me, which once again makes me feel as if the networks in question are "mine". Obviously, they're not, but I feel that way, and I take great pride in protecting these networks and the confidential data belonging to my customers.

Re: What Mail Server Do The Big Universities Use?

At the edge, we run postfix. I have a 7105t that I've had for a while, but I'll probably look at "upgrading" to the new one, especially if it has a camera. Granted, my usage of the phone is about 95% business and 5% personal, but there are lots of times I'm out with friends and wish I had a camera with me.

By the way, RIM was running a "special" for a while on BES (not sure if they still are). If you bought a Blackberry, they'd give you a copy of the Express edition of BES along with one free CAL. That was the deciding factor for me, as I set up a new 2K3 server at work running just BES. If you're not running BES, don't bother with the Blackberry, period. There's the other option where you run their desktop software to "redirect" mail to the Blackberry, but there is no synchronization between the BB software and your desktop software (presumably, Outlook).

Re: New Server + New Host = Sick Speed

Sweet!

For me, having a full mirror a few switches away on a 1 Gbit/s fiber connection works pretty well. =)

Re: On My Site, Firefox Rules

Of course, the results just *might* be biased that most of your readers are quite possibly security professionals or, at the very least, I.T. folks... you know, the kind of people who wouldn't run IE on *someone else's* computer. ;)

Re: Internet Explorer 7 Doesn’t Work With Exchange 2003 OWA?

I haven't touched IE7 as of yet, but I know that a few guys in my department have it installed. I'll have 'em test it against OWA in our environment. I would assume that they've already tried the IE7/OWA combo, but can't guarantee it. I do know that if they had issues, I would've heard about it. Possibly some "weird" settings in your OWA environment?

On a side note, have you considered implementing RPC-over-HTTPS for Exchange? It allows one to use the full Outlook client from anywhere, assuming HTTPS is open on the front-end server. Before I got my Blackberry, I had a Windows Mobile-based phone, and before that a Windows Mobile-based PDA. None of them even come close to comparing to the Blackberry.

It's too bad that you can't get $work to spring for BES -- without it, my Blackberry would be nearly useless. I had my Blackberry for exactly a week before I got BES installed and "upgraded" with my carrier to support BES. The synchronization that it provides is priceless. During that one-week period, I'd delete messages from my phone, then have to delete them from Exchange again. Now, I have the synchronization and it freakin' rocks. I never have to worry about manually synch'ing anything.

I'm out of the office (and away from a PC) just as much as I'm in the office, so having the Blackberry has been a lifesaver from me. It's really good from the customer service aspect as well -- my voice mail message at work says something like "for a faster response, please send me e-mail". While I may only check voice mail once a week (if I'm not "in"), I'll get their e-mail (and can respond) near instantaneously.

I'm sure you've probably brought it up to $boss before, but the pricing on BES Express is really awesome. RIM's U.S. Pricing page lists a price of $1,099 USD for BES Express (supports up to 15 users) and includes 5 CAL's. I understand that's not chump change, but for no more than what it costs, it's definitely worth it.

Like you, however, I can't wait for the 8800 to come out.

Re: The BMW 335i’s Power Is Underrated

I'm still pretty fond of this one, though I crashed it a few months ago (assuming I can embed an <img src...&rt; in the comment):

Gotta love the rush of 0-60 in three seconds, 60-120 in about five, and being able to go from 0-70 and back to 0 in a city block. =)

Anyways, hope you like the new ride. (I'd give you a link, but I think you have HTML disabled, so the ISBN is 0596007833 (it's available used from Amazon for $11).

I picked this up a month or so ago when Borders was giving a 25% discount to "educators", which somehow included me -- I work at an .edu, but I'm a network admin, not a professor.

Anyways, for the last few months, I've been reading some of the various GTD articles and sites and trying to find ways to... well, get things done. My department is pretty small -- just five full-time staff, a few part-time staff, and a handful of student workers.

While, looking back, I realize that much of what is written in the book is "common sense", a lot of it didn't really hit me until I read it in print. I've now read it twice, and started implementing what I could from the first day. The big thing for me was eliminating distractions -- mainly that new mail notification from Outlook coming outta my PC speakers every few minutes. I'm to the point where I open Outlook three or four times a day, read/reply to what I need to right then, and close it out again. Perhaps 30 minutes before the workday is over and I start "winding down", I open it one last time and deal with the mail that I put off for the day.

Obviously, that's only one of any possible number of interruptions we "sysadmins" face and that's not all of what the book covers. I really believe that being in the I.T. world has its own unique "challenges" with regards to managing your time -- as well as many other professions do, I'm sure -- and this book really hit home with me.

I won't ramble any further, but if you're really into GTD, pick up a copy of the book. If you read much of the GTD-type articles/sites, a lot of what it's in the book will be familiar to you -- at least in concept, but the author has found a way to relate it to the I.T. world and some of the unique challenges we face.

-j

Re: We Are Engaged

Congratulations, Daniel (and the future Mrs. Miessler)! On the way home, I was cruising about 80 (on my bike) when a souped up Mustang pulled up beside me, revved his engine and smiled. It was on, in a similar non-adversarial manner. We "raced" for a few moments until we came upon traffic, him peaking at about 130.

If you like the feeling, you should get a bike. You may like your 335i but there's just nothing like 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. My personal best is 140 on four wheels, 170 on two. I let up at 170 because, honestly, by that point it was just too damn stupid. One slip up and I wouldn't be sitting here writing this comment.

Yes, it's fun. It's nothing for us to stop mid-way for a beer and a sandwich. It's not like we're riding around like drunk maniacs. It is, in my opinion, no different than having a beer over a business lunch and going back to the office.

Take care, enjoy the speed. =)

Re: Signing with Initials

I have:

"Thanks,
-j"

as the first part of my signature, just because I'm lazy, but depending on who I'm e-mailing I'll often remove the -j and put my name in (too be a bit more "formal").

I know lots of others who do the same.

Re: Two Cannibals and a Clown

A priest, a rabbi, and a minister walk into a bar.
