in I don’t want a 23andMe — I want the real genetic tests on Think Gene
"--" is automatically changed to an em dash in Wordpress -- that is quite possibly one of the best features I have ever seen in a program.

in Andrew’s 23andMe Kit on Think Gene
I wonder if Navigenics also uses Oragene for saliva collection... anyone know of any alternatives? I know that you can buy chemicals to treat swabs to allow indefinite storage at room temperature, but I suspect Oragene patented the idea of having such chemicals automatically released in a way transparent to the spitter.

J-Function: SSRIs may cause weight gain, but 5-HTP itself is a nutritional supplement with "supporting weight loss" as its indicated use.

in Estrogen applied to the human penis could stop the spread of HIV [trash] on Think Gene
Another dubious part is that they are making links between studies showing different HIV transmission results. Another interesting part in this story is that it seems like estrogen regrows foreskin-like skin in circumcised penises.

Here are some powerful statistics that a lot of people have not seen with regards to HIV transmission: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV#Transmission

in Absence of “High Penetrance” in SNP Genomic Services on Think Gene
Steve: I don't disagree, but that is the logic the SNP services are using... we'll see how long it holds up.

in Absence of “High Penetrance” in SNP Genomic Services on Think Gene
The SNP services also can't offer these tests because they are too medically useful. They are too firmly established as medical tests to be sold as informational tests. So they can only sell newly discovered, not patented, tests which aren't as good as the older medical tests. If they give people actionable medical information, it becomes very difficult to argue that the test is for informational purposes only.

in GINA Series: When Employer Genetic Testing is Appropriate [Page 3] on Think Gene
@Drew -- US society at least is not going to shift to allow something like birth licenses for the foreseeable future. Are there any solutions viable in the next 10 years?

Jesus was a stoner, also. "Anointing" in oil has a psychedelic connotation.

I'd like to see this one refuted, please, I will even accept Biblical evidence.

Thanks for the comment, John. The joke here is that the technology described in our manbearpig post is very real. It can be done.

in Knome’s Whole-Genome Service Details on Think Gene
In the Wired piece on 23andme, it is mentioned that they have 20 people committed to buy a whole genome sequence at $250,000. So the other players are going to get there very quickly also.

in Navigenics Launches Whole-Genome Scan on Think Gene
>I think it’s clear that 23andMe and Navigenics have the most potential to gain broader appeal.

The real test will come when Big Pharma/Healthcare start getting into genomics. I wonder if they will partner with one of the upstarts or do it themselves.

in Navigenics Launches Whole-Genome Scan on Think Gene
Will be interesting to see how three companies offering essentially the same physical product will differentiate themselves.

Navigenics is selling an expensive unlimited genetic counseling service with the same genetic test as everyone else.

23andme has "social networking" features.

And deCODEme also exists.
