Love this excerpt! Once upon a time, in a job far, far away, our team-building consultant asked if me I knew the role I was playing on our team. The very question was confusing, especially in a business setting. His answer was confusing too: "Spiritual leader." Without knowing or consciously thinking about it, I had been helping lift spirits. We all have that opportunity!

alas, this seems more about telling the truth than blogging. most of the msm claims the disengaged middle by blaming both sides essentially equally, and most blogging consists of preaching to an extremely narrowcasted choir. meanwhile, the country seems almost irreversibly divided and i can't imagine an external threat that can bring us together. truth, alone, certainly won't do it because we all increasingly have access to our own truths.

love the mobay to negril anecdote. took the same ride around the same time and heard exactly the same thing. hadn't heard about the lack of back doors. the main point of my narrator was that the homes were built by the cubans. jamaica was very divided politically at the time. i'm sure there were pro-cuba jamaicans, probably closer to kingston. also it's quite likely jamaicans benefiting from american tourists were telling us what they thought we'd like to hear.

the best thing about being naïve is that you don't know you can't do something. sometimes not knowing is exactly what allows you to do it. the worst thing, however, is that if you're seen as naïve, you can't convince others to join in. and since you can't do it yourself, naïvete leads to failure.

there's a difference between "naïve" and "hopelessly naïve."
having experience on both sides of this equation, unelecting a conservative republican like paul ryan with a more moderate or centrist republican seems, well, hopeless. more hopeless than getting the democrats to be less … republican (especially since democrats, for the most part, are already less republican).

pols are always talking about how we have to cut spending so we don't leave all this debt to our grandchildren. given how tax rates are much lower now than when we were children, it seems we're leaving debts to our grandchildren because we don't want to pay our share right now.

let the record show (i love bureaucratese!) that only three of my five (non-submited) picks ( "my favorite things," "so what" and "stolen moments") made the list: no "lonely woman" (neither ornette coleman's or horace silver's). no "i want to talk about you" (although it shares chord changes with "misty" which did make the list).

only one wayne shorter tune? nothing by benny golson or tom harrell? "red clay" ranks higher than "maiden voyage?" "fever" comes in ahead of "satin doll?" "struttin' with some bbq" comes in ahead of "on green dolphin" street? "dolphin dance" doesn't make the cut, but "cantaloupe island" and "watermelon man" are worthy? "birdland?" seriously??

i've read/heard some criticism of the memorial as being too upbeat, too much like a political or pep rally. what that reminds me of is a funeral i attended several years ago. the minister pointed at the casket and said, "she's dead. the funeral is not for her. funerals are for the living." it was kind of shocking at the time, but it explains the need to help us heal and keep moving forward in the face of immeasurable sadness and pain. all i can think right now is, "amen!"

Fantastic interview! I love how Herbie describes Miles’ reaction to him playing a “wrong chord!” This seems like verification for a Miles quote I heard about long ago. Asked what he does when he plays a wrong note, Miles, in his raspy voice, said, “I play it again!”

Anyway, making sure all my jazz musician friends check this out!

Also, be aware of cross-platform issues. I recently developed a PowerPoint presentation on a Mac but had to deliver the presentation running on a Windows PC. Some text no longer fit properly because the PC didn't have the appropriate fonts.
