Odd and almost serendipitous timing, seeing as I'm at the crossroads of launching my own thing, spurred on by constant frustrations, ineptitude, and lack of insight/foresight with my current career path.

Although your article addresses current entrepeneurs, I think as a practicing one it helps to warn of the various marketing pitches and voices out there intent on telling you what to do as a start-up, versus just doing/listening to what you know best. I know some people who take many of the seminars as gospel, often purging their own great ideas and thoughts on their service or company and replacing them with run-of-the-mill tactics and strategies. If it's your company/idea/service that you're starting, aren't you the most senior, professional consultant there is?

Thanks for the link add btw, and I've reciprocated.

Jon

Re: 101 Business Twitter Ideas, Tactics, and Strategies

Cheers Barry, thanks for the linkage. This seems to have happened only recently, though I seem to recall you releasing a newer version of Greetbox lately? Or am I mistaken?

When I disable the plugin entirely, my coda slider works fine. However, when I enable the plugin, I only use it on the single post page, yet the greetbox JS is loaded on all pages, including the homepage (where my slider is).

Could you tell me how to disable the automatic JS onload on all pages, and use it only on my single page? Alternatively, are you aware of this bug or know of any other workarounds for it? As I said, I really love your plugin and am gutted I can't use it anymore!

Regards,
Jon

Re: WP Greet Box WordPress Plugin

Wow Thaya, that's what I call service!! I've just written an article on this exact topic - http://www.carbongraffiti.com/2008/09/03/the-reverse-tipping-point-say-goodbye-ie6/. Getting guys like you to prove that you're considering dropping IE6 support is crucial to starting the ball rolling.

Re: Freelancing – why do I do it?

Great post, and I agree with all of it. One of my main motivations is 'creativity'. Freelancing allows me to try, experiment, learn, test and play - far more than my current job would ever allow. Having a day job is fine - it pays the bills ontime and it's steady, but feeling creative and having an outlet for that creativity... you can't put a price on it. Actually you kind of can, which is why freelancing is such a bonus - you get to play and get paid for it. Your day job just fills the void!

Re: Three reasons why freelancers are safer during a recession

I totally agree. In fact, I see the freelancer/contractor role becoming pivotal in the coming months in the UK, with C-levels pushing back permanent head count in favour of short-term, high-value bodies. This exact scenario is unfolding at my current workplace, and I can't imagine it will change anytime soon.

Additionally, freelancers (at least web-related) offer skills that will surely become even more crucial in a sinking economy. The web, although we're all used to it and take it for granted, is still relatively untapped by those brick n' mortar stores owned by baby boomers etc. who need a low-cost, quick win, high value solution (ie a kickass website that gets quality traffic) to address their problems.

Ultimately I'm remaining highly optimistic that any freelancing that's directly web-related will only stand to benefit from this credit crunch; the Web is cheaper, more accountable and in many ways much more effective than any other channel. Go freelance, go web, and thrive!

Re: Freelance Advisor Reviews: Super Sony Laptop

Sigh. It sounds a dream, but that price tag is obscene. (I'm a poet and don't I know it!).

I'm liking the idea of more tech reviews like this. Keep 'em coming!

Re: Freelance Advisor Reviews: Super Sony Laptop

Also, to be fair, at 18.4" isn't this beast more of a desktop replacement than a portable, on-the-go-bust-out-photoshop-and-start-designing-anywhere laptop?

It'd be great to see a review from the opposite end of the spectrum - i.e. a mini notebook - and how it compares in a freelancing context.

Re: Freelancing FUBARs: 8 common mistakes

Great article.

Such valid points, and a freelancer's not being honest if they say they've never fallen victim to most of them at one time or another. I know I have.

One more faux pas I'd add as is 'workspace zen'. Not sure about your other readers, but I'm terrible for needing a clean deskspace (on top of organization and coffee), before I get to work on a client.

The problem arises when the space is *not* clean - I tend to over-procrastinate (badly) by making it the cleanest it's ever been, by which time I've taken a large bite out of the already limited time I can devote to that client.

I'd suggest always making sure your workspace is comfy, clean, devoid of distractions, and conducive to work. One final note: it always helps (though not always possible) to have that workspace somewhat removed from your normal life, i.e. another room or office, where you can switch on and off between your family life and your work life.
