Since Facebook is not a software company (while MSFT, or even Cisco is), open sourcing (their own) software will very unlikely harm them, but instead, only reinforces its leading position, for whatever Facebook does or does not do, the Facebook competitors will do anyways (to dwarf Facebook wrt its influence in the market)... /ac.

On the other hand, while data most valuable data to FB, we don't want their soc graph data (or well, not urgent).. we (and the platform-software/service providers in general i surmise, eg., say wordpress.org or elgg.org, etc.) would want some worthy-of-reference open source codes, say directly in php, plus the very core db tables defs... therefore helping the social platform software developers "to conform to the facebook specs).. this would make the real difference in the FB vs. OpenSocial race.

The official licensing of the tags and methods is great -- very great.

Better yet, why not take an extra step and provide some

examples and/or styles)... such that, could, say, our

Common practice, normal track of decision and behavior. Reasonable - He created the thing, and getting a little reward back for himself while on good valuation is quite acceptable (and in fact prudent).

Correct. For companies that hailed and embraced the OpenSocial initiative, they're gradually getting disappointed, us included.

As a commenter wrote into the TC comments, this OS thing is more sounding like the .NET thing of Microsoft's 2002 initiative... now after 5 years, what has become of .NET, other than this ".NET Framework download" bothering people wanting to run those C# applications...

Give it 10 more years (or perhaps 5 will do), and this will be THE way to break up some relationship.. hey, it's handy.. and quite guaranteeing to work :-)

Obviously out of so much relunctancy.. drawing the past success of the "News Feed" experience. And they redefined what "News Feed" (traditionally of usenet) means to people, they (and MZ) certainly think they can continually change the world in any way he/they want. Not necessarily a bad thing, life is too short to just argue day and night for what's good and what's bad anyway, just give it a bold try.

The very idea per se, while of good merits, taste sour to both the funding party and the funded.. perhaps a little better (or worse) than the Y-Combinator level of deals.. (albeit, still, respectable, to be sure.)

Yes, but before they found the adwords/adsense revenue methodology (of goto.com's), they didn't have much.. other than the larryrank algorithm and a whole bunch of servers (and the search appliances to sell to the enterprise), and that was just shortly 3 years ago..

FB today $15B valuation, if deemed expensive.. well, look at Google when it was $15B or $30B circa IPO.. today, it's $220B...

IMHO, only if required by law then it's perhaps reasonable,
all others are not acceptable -- even by China standards...
let alone in the US (if that's any different than China
in terms of censoring competitor stuff or political reasons).
