Public pressure, now amplified by a much more dispersed media, including publishing platforms like blogs, is only part of the picture.

International treaties, conflicts in policy objectives, a mass media that has the attention span of a gnat, and public opinion that rarely seems settled as well as a generation of politicians who've emerged through think tanks and as SPADs makes for cautious politics.

Re: The Fall and Rise of Andrew Brown: Blogger

Very kind! I suspect that my relatively strong showing (compared with my Labour colleagues) may have had something to do with my name being higher on the ballot paper than theirs as much as my personal qualities as a candidate.

As for my new blog I see the Ladywell Pool people are saying that they can't tell the difference between my views as a councillor and those I hold as a regular citizen. But then I suspect that is just because I still disagree with the aims of their campaign!

Re: Journalists take themselves too seriously

Don't disagree on the whole, but there are exceptions.

Boris Johnson, Lembick Opic and Stephen Pound are MPs, to name three, who seem to manage their public persona's (mostly) successfully.

But it's a relatively high risk strategy in comparison to the "dead bat".

Similarly there are journalists who seem to like and respect politicians; but they're overwhelmed by those with the "why are these lying bastards lying to me" mindset.

Re: is there one, best way to blog?

Actors and musicians?

Re: http://www.onemanandhisblog.com/archives/2006/09/a_few_notes_on.html

That second thought is interesting. I suppose social software could be discouraged by the companies (already "blog" is a word that brings down the iron curtain in some companies, just like we were living in China) and the young people accept that because they don't have any power, or it'll mean that IT departments will need to co-opt a lot of those people and stop being the "have you turned it off and on again?" types parodied by the IT Croud.

Re: Lewisham Sucks

Ooops that should have been Kate I was suggesting to invite.

Re: Honey, I'm Home

You know it.

Re: The New Text

Very cool.

Re: The Death of the Home Page

There was a good manifesto on this from Change This a few years ago, which has a very similar argument to the one you point to.

The authors suggested that we should humanise our sites as much as possible drawing people in through the stories of the people involved in the organisation and interaction with real people.

Re: Positive Youth Development

Really interesting.

You ought to consider sending this in to the government's consultation on supporting youth work sector.

Re: Film Editing with Young People

I had Dazzle, used it once and it then sat on my shelf for a couple of years as tried to find excuses not to edit our home movies.
