An open letter to TVNewser:

Kevin,

First of all let me say in advance I respect the job you and Chris do over at TVN and I don't envy the decisions you have to make. That said, I am wondering if you can clarify some points for me.

When I cam to the TVN shindig back in the spring, I purposely sought out you and Chris to get your takes on the the behavior of the forums. At that time you both were of the opinion that you didn't want to get in the business of censoring commentators. With few exceptions you guys have stayed the course.

That being the case, the comment sections have turned into the wild, wild, west with more commentary about off-topic subjects and personal politics, and less commentary about the actual business of TV. People can say whatever crazy and hateful things they want without fear of repercussion from TVN:

-Michelle Obama is a gorilla
-Jon Stewart is a k*ke
-welfare recipients are half-breed, lazy mongrels
-any number of remarks about gays, Rachel Maddow being a dude, etc.

I understand your reticence in wanting to play sheriff, but in your absence a lot of internecine fighting has broken out, which brings me to the actual point....

I had enough of the inanity in the comment section. I had several options in front of me a) accept it for what it is, b) walk away from it, or c) fight it. Out of sheer boredom I chose option 'c.' If the comment section can't be at least remotely topical, I was going to bombard and antagonize the worst offenders in my eyes, hence the 'Sombrero Jihad.'

Childish - yeah; overkill - most certainly; grating - check.

Last night TVN started to delete my comments. Fine, I understand why it happened. What I don't understand is this: why would you delete posts that were actually germane to the topic (my wife going to Haiti in the Haiti thread) as well as a few others? Secondly, after all the nonsense that goes on here, NOW you start to actively delete posts without even the benefit of an explanation?

If I am banned, I accept you verdict. I would be curious to hear what your and Chris's thoughts on the matter.

BTW, Kevin wrote me back and told me that it wasn't him who deleted the "Sombrero Jihad." He is of the opinion that it did not originate within TVN but actually from DISQUS, but he was not for certain.
