Meh. Maybe I'm just sick of gotcha politics, but this seems like a stretch to me.
Sputnik launched in October 1957, so I can well imagine Hillary remembers her 5th grade teacher talking about math and science as it related to space exploration. The fact that during an unscripted speech, she conflated the whole early space program under the label "Apollo" doesn't strike me as particularly damning.
It has to be an activist, whose primary goal is to advance the interests of the Republican right, just as Kos's aim is to advance the interests of the Democratic left. Giving the job to an opinion journalist would be extremely unfair.
I disagree, however, that he (or she) should be as strident as Kos. I'd prefer someone who outclasses Kos in an obvious way. However, I'll bet Newsweek offers it to Ann Coulter, precisely because she won't make Kos look bad.
