The solution is starting to come to the surface and that is corporate sponsorship/underwriting of conferences.

Eliminating the cost to attendees solves the low attendance issue.

as far as the stream of data coming out of them...this just needs to be embraced across the board.

When I was pastoring in Hawaii, a multi-ethnic church was the norm. We didn't intentionally try to be multi-ethnic, we just reflected the community we were in.

I think that's a reasonable goal, to reflect the ethnic makeup of the community you are in. Or at least visit it as a way of a health indicator.

at the same time, i don't see a mandate for being intentional about being a multi-ethnic church in scripture.

I'm a church planter. A 'tent making' church planter at that. Which means not only do I have the work load of being a pastor, but I also am part of the work force and still the ends don't meet.

I spent a couple years as a minority when I lived in Hawaii. It was a cool experience.

I am bothered by it. But it is just a symptom of a Christian community that might care more about itself then those outside.

Rather than preparing our young people to go and make an impact on the culture, we try to replicate a culture in the confines of a Christian Ghetto.

I will say that I am encouraged as Gen X takes over and is not interested in bunkering down and lobbing bombs at culture from the comfort of our pews.

@Mark - I agree that the quality of Christian entertainment sucks. Maybe it's because the people that control the money are trying to be safe.

Christian industry is a direct result of American 'Safe Theology'. When Darby and the like came up with 'pre-trib' eschatology a 100 years ago or so, they started a snowball effect of separatism that continues to grow a wider gap.

We have a massive contingency of safe theology in America, that I think the rising generations are tired of and I believe we will be able to shed in the next 50 years. but like pulling of a band aid, it will hurt a bit.

I hate to say it, but the ipod equally annoys me. You are only allowed to walk around in public listening to an ipod if you previously did the same with a CD player...otherwise you are just posing with your gear.

I believe ministry is about people, not performance. Sure there are times when it is obvious that someone is not pulling their weight. The whole two year average stems from the fact that it takes people that long to begin to know and trust a leader enough really follow them. Jesus didn't pick the 'performers', he picked the guys who couldn't get to the next level in Jewish school, so they went back to the family business.

Is the church a Business/Corporation?

That said, there is no formula for ministry. You have to take who you are and how you worship and try to communicate that to some people. Which is cool, because there is a church out there that will fit just about anyone.

the church planters budget is working well for you. gotta love the ACP88. I also like the E906...get 'em a little closer to the cone then the 57s.

We have been stretching Lycra with truss to create a backdrop and we also project on it.

I have always loved your ability to create cool rooms on the cheap...now you have the added bonus of not having to worry about portability. I can only dream of the day.

Depends...doesn't everything

A worship music driven church needs to protect the music worship and be careful to not let the teaching get too lengthy. Where as a church built on Bible exposition needs to be sure an feature teaching ant not short change it.

Most will fall somewhere in between. Find a out what you do well...and focus on that.

The trick is having a team that can be honest with each other and speak truth about what you do well and what you don't.

I've been to churches with average worship and awesome teaching...which ends up being a good experience. The reverse can be true. Scale back what is weaker and feature what is strong...not ideal, but works.

When I was pastoring in Hawaii there were a lot of multi-church events/gatherings.

I'd say the biggest mistake was that the people organizing the events thought that they were good outreach opportunities. But at the same time it was just a churchy dog and pony show. So being clear what the purpose is and what is expected and actually sticking to it is huge.

the other issue is to keep it from being a %^*# swinging contest. I think this is best solved by bringing in the speaker from outside the community of churches involved. In Hawaii they knew this and would usually bring someone in. Keep the mic out of the hands of any senior/lead pastors hands and you will greatly increase chances of a successful night.

churches say they value these roles with their words...but not with their paychecks.

I coach teams at churches all over to do the tech stuff. I have come to realize that these leaders have replaced youth pastors as the hardest working least paid on a church staff.

but the fact does remain that technology is moving quicker than volunteers can keep up with.

I guess should add that Obligation and Obedience alone are not the answer, I tend to dwell in extremes, but they are a part of the big picture for sure.

I would offer that community is what gets the average person out of bed to go to a worship gathering.

Being honest here, being obedient is counter to our nature. But add the accountability of a community, and 'WE' can be obedient together, because I know that 'I' have no chance.

But without love and faith, neither will amount to much.

When I look at the early church in Acts I see a gathering of people that had the expectation of non-Christians in attendance. It went without saying. this meant two things.

the gathering made sense to non-Christians (culturally relevant)

the gather met the needs of the believers

When you have a 'Seeker Service' you are saying that you will only meet one of those needs and then require a separate gathering to meet the other...like a second church. when do you achieve a level of Christianity to go to the 'believers' service. since when are there ranks in Christendom?

a 1% national sales tax would bring in the same tax revenue that the government pulled down 10 years ago. With some cutting of waste we would have no problem making that amount work. I hit the 31% tax bracket this year and it hurt to see my money going to waste.

totally true. a lot of people in moving and growing churches have know idea what the norm is. fact is, more than 80 percent of evangelical churches have less than 100 people attending.

I have been a part of the death of churches via our denomination. and i have seen the death as a good thing. they are old churches with old people that have no interest in being relevant to the community. it's great when the denomination comes in and shuts the doors, sells the property and uses the money to plant new churches.

In a perfect world that would be epic to not have institutionalized church. The emergent movement has tried to make that work and they brought a lot a fresh truth to the table that modern churches have taken to heart and started to make some changes. What we have seen is that the movement has been ineffective. Sure there have been some successful communities here and there, but for the most part the ideas are to far away from where people are at now.

Cliff, you sound like i used to. And I think you are right. But the fact is that we have to be effective, and in America that means compromise....which sucks.

believe me when I say that the church should:

>actually love gay people and not protest them
>protest war
>stop being an alienated group within communities
>not vote republican or democrat
>solve real problems as gospel...not just bring 'the gospel'
>etc...

The fact is that we have to tread lightly in the direction that you speak of, and I want to get there faster than anyone, but along the way we need to be effective where we are and build a massive account of credibility.

that's the worst part. We have to be careful when we speak of truths that are to wide angle for American Christians, or we lose credibility. Little issues like drinking and media intake are still major issues with the Christians in America. The VAST majority of Christians would go cross-eyed trying to tune into this simple dialog we are having right here.

also, our credibility with the American public is pretty beat up for many reasons. TBN, westboro baptist, Joel Olsteen, Jimmy Swaggert, ted haggard...this list goes on.

So we have guns cocked and aimed at us from both directions.

The American church is a monster that we can't just walk away from, we have to tame it and bring it back to what God intended.

If you want to be a change agent, Credibility is everything.

Compromise sucks...but it is the reality we live in. I'm not Jesus and neither is anyone else.

The American church is our team. We need those people to be effective. Sure a lot of them need to open their eyes to what they have become, and we can start there. This is credibility we need. And we need to do it in peace and love "a house divided will not stand"

Let's say you have a really fat friend and you want to help them to get better. But they are weak and if you come on too strong you may put up a wall and lose any opportunity to be effective. But instead you help them discover for themselves what they should do.

the postmodern church has done a good job of improving dialogue with non-Christians this way. I think we need to treat those in the church the same.

just to keep the conversation going.

The vast bulk of time that Christians have existed has been without a Bible to open and read.

Don't get me wrong, the Bible we have today is and incredible tool and resource that provides a concise and easy place to look at the person of Christ/God, and I have yet to see any evidence show any errancy in the truths therein.

I must however make it a point to say that the truths contained in the Bible are much more important than the Bible itself.

I would also add, that I need not make a case to that point since the very truths survived 1500 plus years before finally being given to the common man in the form of the Bible we now have.

I recommend a book 'The Jesus Sutras'. The book tracks the Gospel as it passes through China well before any Bible. The story and truths about Christ are passed orally and they stay in tact.

I believe the conversation that God began will always carry on. Complete, and without error, Bible or not. I cannot reduce the truth and power of Almighty God to paper and ink. But I am super thankful for the miracle that is the Bible

I think you would have to agree that he is at least a little right. It has been heavy on my mind in the last couple years.

The reality is that the church in America has chosen some battles to fight that were probably the wrong ones to get into and missed the point to begin with.

MTV has showed their weakness for year, they have always had an awful and mostly useless website. With their resources they should have the slickest and hottest web site around....FAiL
