in Quick Tip: Firefox Favourites Icon Bar on bart's blog
OK, now that you say it's the Weather Network, I recognize it. I didn't think it was AT&T, but that's the only thing I could think of.

in Quick Tip: Firefox Favourites Icon Bar on bart's blog
I've been doing this for a while. It's a great tip, but definitely increases the amount of available toolbar real estate.

As for your sites, I can't get them all, but I can get most of them:

- Friend Feed
- Twitter
- ???
- Gaming World
- Something Awful
- ???
- Some kind of stock ticker?
- TD Bank
- Google Calendar
- Google Docs
- Gmail
- Gmail again
- ???
- Facebook
- BLANK!
- Reddit
- Yelp??
- AT&T...in Canada?

Bartek Haha, nice work.. very close. The ones you missed in order:
- last.fm
- huffington post
- google stocks
- WS was part of the gmail icon. A way to differentiate between the two ;)
- yelp = ycombinator
- at&t = the weather network but now that you mention it, they look eerily the same on a small scale

I have noticed, that, actually. To be fair, though, live theatre is one thing that Edmonton genuinely does well, so I suppose it's not surprising that Edmonton-based Fringe plays did well.

Have you come across many bugs, yet? I've noticed that it doesn't play very well with Flash (and, despite being designed so that only the affected tab crashes, rather then the whole browser, Chrome likes to die when I try to play Flash games).

Allan Indeed.

The local papers seem to love everything they review, so that might have something to do with it. Have you ever noticed how few seriously *bad* reviews there are? About anything, restaurants, plays, art shows, etc. Maybe I just hate everything but I think the critics cut local stuff a lot of slack.

in charting the fringe on the bento box
The ratings in the Journal are distributed fairly similar to those in See, so I'd lean toward saying that there are a lot of good plays this year. Of course, I've also heard some incredibly negative word-of-mouth surrounding plays that have received very good reviews, so I suppose it's all relative.

Allan Yeah, you can always fined AA batteries at a convenience store but finding plug-ins and the time to charge is a different story. Also you don't need to carry around a pile of wall warts (just usb dongles).

Random comment, but, do you really need to include your del.icio.us feed in your feedburner feed, if you're sharing all of those share stories here? I get all of your shared links twice in my feed reader. I don't know how you have your feed setup, so I don't know if you can actually turn that off or not...

I forgot I still had a feedburner feed at all... I shall remedy that.

in the bento box - Homophobic Violence on the Rise: Does Germany Have a Problem With Gay Hate Crime? on the bento box
I'm sure there is at least some degree of truth in it, it's a strange sort of irony that new immigrants tend to be more conservative than most people in their adopted country, despite the fact that they're often leaving a country that is oppressive and "backward." It just seems like an attempt at passing the blame to "those damn immigrants."

Allan Its hard to gauge. Especially how many European countries seem to be shifting more right, and more anti-immigrant.

Is it the immigrants that are being more homophobic, or is that just scape goating to justify a deep seated mistrust/hatred of immigrants? I can't really say.

Let's blame violence against one minority group on the actions of other minority groups. Yeah...that's healthy. Obviously, I don't condone the homophobic violence, but blaming it on "illiberal" immigrants sounds, to me, like a weird sort of racism disguised as liberalism.

in I have too much stuff on the bento box
I'm on the same page as you. I have a lot of junk that I need to get rid of. Of course, I look through the boxes of stuff I never use and either (A) become sentimental/nostalgic and decide that I simply can't through away such a "meaningful" item, or (B) convince myself that, even though I haven't touched the item in question in months (or years), now that I've remembered I have it, I'll surely begin to use it and, as a result, should keep it.

One day, I'm going to be merciless and brutal and just toss it all.

As far as embarrassing journals, if you're never going to look at them again, I'd toss them, unless you think you'll feel the need to pass them on to some hypothetical future generation of Farrell's ("Here you go, nephew, read all about your uncle's life. Don't make the same mistakes I did!").

in Death from afar on the bento box
I think Aaron is right, more or less, about the "heroic morality." The grittier heroes you talk about are more anti-heroes (who are generally more interesting, as things are a lot more grey in their worlds).

Could a sniper as a hero work? I don't know. I think people have been trained to think of snipers and others who work in a somewhat clandestine manner as cowardly. This isn't necessarily a fair assessment, but it's a common one.

Besides, reading about/watching a guy sit perched out waiting for bad guys to turn up in his line of site doesn't sound like the most gripping of story lines.

Allan There does seem to be this idea that combat is somehow illegitimate if the two parties aren't directly confronting one another. Which I find funny since its so archaic. Who does that anymore? Its not just the push-button warfare of the modern military-industrial complex: freedom fighters (or terrorists depending on who you ask) around the world tend to plant bombs and detonate with cell-phones instead of lining up in red-coats for the proper battle.
aaron I don't think the impression of snipers is cowardice, but more playing god.

Back to Allan's superman comment Superman, despite having the powers of a god, doesn't play god. Despite superior power, and morality, he stays within the confines of our justice system delivering the captured evil-doers to police. Only weaker heroes get away with dishing out their own justice and in that case it's generally in the heat of combat or when their emotions get the best of them. Either way they're not playing god.

The trouble with a sniper is they're explicitly playing god every time they look through the scope, deciding who lives and who dies. When a character starts playing god they very quickly become a villain.

1. Cell phone
2. Communication
3. Allow our customers to tell us what they need, instead of trying to tell them what they need.
4. Are we talking about money? Plastic. Are we talking about bags at the grocery store? Neither, I use reusable ones (well, when I remember...).

in We’re All Wrong on A New Marketing
I think you're definitely onto something here, Matt. It's pretty obvious, when you actually stop and think about it. I mean, branding can work wonders, but when it comes to conversions, the way to get them is to go after the people who are already your fans. You don't create new fans by shoving stuff in front of there face, you do it by treating your existing fans well enough that they will go beyond mere fans/customers and become brand evangelists for you.

in Which 4 C’s? on A New Marketing
It's hard to say which version of the 4 Cs is "best," but I'm pleased that all of them include "Customers" and "Communications." To me, those are the two most important things (and, I think your list includes them, too, even if you didn't name them directly).
