I agree with you completely, except that I don't think of Syesha as a strong vocalist. Or something about her is not strong to me, maybe just that she likes songs in a boring genre. Anyway, she just never jumps out at me one way or another, never leaves any impression on me. And I think the reason Jason Castro sails through is for the same reason Sanjaya did for so long. I realize I keep saying that. But you know, he is totally the kind of guy 12 year old this is "soooo cute!" But you're right, he's out of his league. And he seems strangely unfamiliar with most of the artists they've had. You're also right in that they should pick a broader genre, like "Broadway" and not just the Cats guy. But still, even though I'm not a fan of ALW, I know his stuff, and I cdon't even follow Broadway. Jason seems like he's never even heard most of these songs before! That's another thing I like about David Cook. He definitely has a niche, but he seems pretty well rounded as far as what he's familiar with, and especially what he can do with it.

okay, i looked it up, and evidently israel what's his name sings the lyrics that way (wonder why i've never noticed it before?) so the lyric switch up was intentional. still, i don't like that dude. i know what you mean about brooke; we totally loved her until the last two or three weeks. so she may change my mind again. and yes, i think david archuleta is just a really young guy who has terrible taste in music. he could improve with age :) then again, all this comes from me, a huge mariah carey fan. i am not kidding. although i haven't heard anything she's done since, wow, 1997. but at one point, i had all her albums up until then!

I totally agree with you about David Cook. We didn't see the first three, and often miss at least on of the performances, so I can't say a whole lot about the group overall, except that it seems David Cook is just way ahead of everyone else. I liked Brooke at first, but she is really starting to get on my nerves, I am willing to give her another chance though :). And I have no idea why so many people like David Archuleta. He totally cheeses me out. But that's just me. Also, I can't handle Jason Castro; he's even cheesier than David Archuleta. And he totally botched the lyrics to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" last week and no one said anything! But I whole heartedly, 100% agree with you on David Cook. I am still in awe of his version of Billie Jean! Whoa!

i am totally with you on d.h. lawrence. wives and daughters is an awesome miniseries that the BBC did, if you want to skip the 700+ page novel. i have the miniseries on DVD and will happily lone it to you if you're interested. just let me know next time you're in town to get it. i recently loned it to jon and annie b. and they both loved it. or read the book, you know, 'cause you don't read enough as it is :)

also, i'm a total bonehead. i always want the book to be called sons and daughters, but it's not. it's sons and lovers or wives and daughters. sons and lovers is the one that is dreadful. wives and daughters is delightful. neither have anything to do with the band though :) and noisier is not always bad. when i get the chance, i'll have a little listen.

Hey, I'm listening to Vampire Weekend right now! We saw them on SNL a while back and I very much enjoyed them, so George bought the CD. Yesterday, actually. And I agree, they are delightful! I keep being reminded of The Clash. But maybe that's just me. And now I shall see what I think of Sons and Daughters. But I must confess, I did not at all enjoy the book Sons and Daughters :)

in Jandy’s Meanderings » Best of 2007; or, Yay More Lists! on Jandy's Meanderings
Hey Jandy. I am just now catching up on your blog since before New Years. I like your top 10. I don't think I have a big itch to see No Country for Old Men, but that is just because whoa, creepy! So I can see how it would be good. I loved the Waitress too! What a great movie. And I looked forward to seeing both Juno and Atonement already; now I can add a couple of your recommendations to my list too! We got Ratatouille for Christmas to go with our Pixar collection. I think it is one of the best in a while. I like it more the more times I see it. I am also interested in some of your book recommendations- several from my Southern Lit syllabus way back at Auburn! And at least one from my Lit in translation! The terrible thing is that I have forgotten almost everything but the cover art from most of those books. I may just have to take your word for it and give them another look though. I am trying to read more. We shall see how that goes :)

Jandy, you did such a great job with this post. I have never even heard of this movie, but you introduced it well and left enough left unknown so that it was not spoiled (not that I'll probably ever see it, but you never know :) ) I love what you said about "what is the story?" not being as helpful as "how is the story told?" I mean, of course we want a good story, but an excellent story can be ruined by the way it is told. I think how it's told is definitely more helpful, because when you strip away the details, there really aren't too too many different stories to tell (this plot sounds a little like something I've heard before as most movies do), but if it is told well, if it acted well, etc. that makes for a better movie watching experience.

I am looking forward to the rest of you 99 reviews :)

Okay Jandy, I will definitely try to catch it again. you persuaded me, if I wasn't already. I did see the "Hopelessly Devoted to You" part while the kids were brushing their teeth, but then got distracted with the rest of the bedtime ritual. Anyway, hear hear about it not being on Fox- otherwise it probably would get canceled before I had a chance to see it again!
