in sMoRTy71.com: Review: Acer Aspire AOA-150 on sMoRTy71
These mini computers are all of a sudden super popular. My sister has been using them for years now for her work. They are perfect for doctors to lug around from office to office to enter in medial notes and look up patient history.

It's only been the past year with this new Atom chip that these baby computers are taking the market by storm. My friend Brian (http://www.131j.com/wp/) just got an Asus EEE 12GB HD from Amazon. I was looking at how they are putting these laptops together and they are actually pretty upgradable. I would have made the same purchase as you did with the larger hard drive. I was reading though that the models with the solid state drives have an even longer battery life! 6 hours sure seems like a lot already.

I just did a quick search, if you're feeling brave you can integrate the bluetooth into the computer with a little patience. http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/08/14/modding-...

in Netiquette massive fail by @FreshFocus on Brandice.net Blog
It is frustrating when someone keeps tweeting you questions that are easily found in the @PodCampOhio's last 3 twitter stream posts and is also found in the top blog post of the PodCampOhio.com web site. I think we just need to let the frustration settle so we can all get along. Kris is Interested in organizing a PodCamp and we could certainly use her help. Hopefully I will be speaking with her soon to smooth things over.

brandice I wish Kris well in organizing a Podcamp and since she's from the Cleveland/Akron area, I'm sure I'll end up attending it, but I call 'em like I see 'em, and I am not impressed with her maturity level. If that's how she reacts to help, she will not be accomplishing anything in the way of organizing an unconference, and I firmly believe that.

Your vote is important! Even if Obama does not win Kentucky, every vote will go toward the popular vote and we want Obama to win both hands down! :-)

in Wordpress Podcasting Plug-in: BluBrry PowerPress on Pajama Professional
We're glad that you like the Blubrry Powerpress Wordpress plugin.

It appears the other player that is appearing in your posts is from the WP Audio Player plugin. The WP Audio Player should have settings that will allow you to disable the player from appearing above your posts. The latest version of the WP Audio Player 2.0 has some really cool options as well, may be worth updating.

in And this is why I’m not voting for Hillary - ever. on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
I am aware of the definition of the word monarch and I used it appropriately for the message I was conveying. Having the same two families run a country for an extended period is like a monarch. You are right though, it is not 'a' monarch, but it is important to think about. How many years should the same two families run a country? What diversities of leadership are we loosing?

I try not to discuss politics publicly but this is BS. Anyone who's taken an economics class knows what supply and demand is, and that removing the tax only allows the supplier to increase their sell price in order to meet the demand. The holiday tax reduction would really be giving the industry an extra boost in profits.

No one is ringing this cowbell yet, but has anyone thought that another good reason not to elect Clinton is so we end the Bush/Clinton Dynasty? If Clinton was elected, our country will have been lead by the same 2 families since 1988. That sounds more like a monarch than a democracy to me.

Just my 2 cents. I'll never vote for Clinton, I made that decision a long time ago. I may just have to vote for the other party if Obama is not the democratic nominee.

in The Dual Mandate of PodCamp on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
I agree with everything you said. I wound like to expand on the importance that regional PodCamps have in their local communities. I am finding that just the process of planning PodCamp Ohio has brought a lot of bloggers and podcasters together virtually who would have otherwise never been connected. It's very exciting!

Here's our Google Map of registered attendees, you can see that almost everyone is coming from in and around the State. http://tinyurl.com/2jvq98

in Firefox Won the Browser War? I Don’t Think So. on FirstClown
What's scary is how many people are still using IE6. I will admit though, IE7 tabbed browsing is so clunky it's sometimes painful.

I was a big Netscape 4 user up till spring of 2001 when I discovered pages rendered in IE better than Netscape. I remember 2003 using Phoenix, then Firebird. The beta versions worked so much better than IE at the time, I wondered why they didn't have more people using the alpha/beta versions. Phoenix/Firebird is now known as Firefox, for those who do not know.

You definitely would never want to take any capital for a web design firm. You're better off bootstrapping, leaving you flexible to do other work during the ups and downs.

You will continue to learn your lessons when starting your own web design business. I recently thought I had a potential client who was sold on having me develop their web site. I traveled 2 hours to meet with them, spent 2 hours consulting them on their options, and left the meeting feeling confident they were ready to deal. When I gave them the quote for phase one of the project, $1,200, they bailed. For what I was about to develop for them, this was pretty inexpensive. They had unrealistic ideas how much a web site would cost. Frankly, I was pretty upset that I wasted 6 hours the night before putting together options for the client and another 7 hours traveling and consulting with them. For now on, I charge a consulting fee from the start to filter out those customers who have no real idea how much time and work is involved in web development.

in Why Twitter Matters : It’s Your AP Newswire on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
Here's one for you, I found out about the Casino Fire from Twitter 15 minutes before the major networks picked it up. Twitter is powerful way to be on top of news.

Twitter is 10x as effective as putting out a press release that's for sure. The best marketing tool so far for PodCamp Ohio is Twitter, it definitely helps those who want to come to the event follow what's happening, who registers, etc... Every time someone registers for the event who supplies their twitter name, we send a twitter message to @podcampohio's Twitter so other followers can follow that person. It's connecting the bloggers and podcasters before PodCamp Ohio even occurs! If you're building a brand or an event, Twitter will take it to the next level.

in Why Keynote Speakers Violate PodCamp Rules on Christopher S. Penn's Awaken Your Superhero
Planning PodCamp Ohio, we've discussed keeping the opening and closing sessions to just a few minutes (10-20) that way we can plan an additional set of sessions in the day.

One of our organizers suggested we allow speakers to select the amount of time they require when they post their session. That way we can schedule two 30 minute sessions where we would otherwise just plan one. The trick will be to group the shorter sessions together that are similar. We haven't crossed that bridge yet.

I suspect that the location can dictate how well a PodCamp can follow the 6 core rules. I think a venue that provides many smaller classrooms rather than a large lecture hall will find it easier to meet the requirements.

There are real stars who speak at PodCamp. From my observation of other PodCamps, a star blogger/podcaster speaker doesn't necessarily get the biggest crowds. It seems the session topics, especially those geared toward new bloggers/podcasters, attract the largest crowds. I think it is important to recognize star speakers who attend the PodCamps. The sessions however, should be presented based on the content, not the speaker.

in PHP vs Perl comparison: the Perl view on Hacking Startups comments
Here's an opinion from a PHP developer:

PHP and Generic Functions, I am not sure what you mean? PHP has a vast array of functions, you can do everything either with classes or with pure function calls.

As far as variable scopes are concerned, this is something you can turn on/off in the php.ini. The new preferred method is to leave them off specially if you allow POST/GET variables to automatically become variables (security risk). When a function declares a variable, it is only available within the function. This is more in-line with C/C++ than Perl. But global variables are not available in functions and that for security reasons. Say you had PHP setup so all POST/GET variables are instantly available as their variable, e.g. script.php?Foo=0 so $Foo is now equal to 1 in the global space of PHP. Now say you have a function with a variable called $Foo = '#FFFFFF'; If you call the function then later in in the global space do something like if( $Foo == 0 ), it will still work because the $Foo in the function did not modify the global $Foo.

No short-circuits is right, but I believe it is because every variable can have a data type (string, array, integer) without specifying what the type is. Here's something else to add, in PHP, if $x = 1 and $y = "1", comparing them normally ($x == $y) will return true where a triple equals check, to check the value and type ($x === $y) will be false.

The PHP strict and warnings are set in a few places. By default they are off, because you would not want the messages to print in production, as they could share file path information and other data that could compromise the security of your web site. You can change this setting in the php.ini, in apache / .htaccess files or within each script using the error_reporting function.

I originally used Perl from 1998-2000 and found the influence of Symbolic programming to be too confusing for the average programmer. Even though I may be able to read the logic, it is sometimes ideal to have the logic written in a way that anyone knowledgeable of a common language such as C/C++ can then read the code.

Another thing that PHP allows for, which some argue against, is spaghetti code. You can easily add a block of logic to a pre-existing html page by adding something like <tag><? php echo $value; ? > </tag>< Many say this is not a clean way to develop but is how many projects are developed such as the themes for Wordpress.

One other item of value for you may be the PHP Perl compatible regular expression functions. http://us3.php.net/manual/en/ref.pcre.php This should make you feel right at home.
