in Mashable on Tumblr - Twitter vs FriendFeed Rivalry Gets Catty I’ve... on Mashable on Tumblr
It's funny watching everyone deal with what I call "The Highlander Syndrome" (there can be only one).

Folks like Scoble seem to have a vested interest in everyone following their lead and picking Friendfeed over Twitter. I get different things from each. FF has a way to go to bring me the utlity I get from Twitter. Twitter cannot touch some of the things FF does.

And this world keeps on spinnin' in the meantime.

in Social Media Is a Tool, It’s Not a Religion on Duct Tape Marketing
Amen John. When I tell people about Twitter I note that it will not clean your oven or cure disease. It is simply a helpful utility. And when I read about "rules" I also chuckle. Guidelines are helpful, but for someone to imply or impose rules? Good luck with that as we figure this stuff out.

It's tough to know when to say when. I agree that the same old questions get old, but you're immersed in this stuff. It takes "the rest of the world" awhile to catch on. Your time is valuable (family time? priceless). But I think part of the pain is the cost of being ahead of the curve.

On Orlando Disney Store? My firm designed that. :-) Hope you had an enjoyable experience.

Gabriel N. I hurled watching the markets crap out before I was able to gulp down a bottle of pepto. Will see what today brings! I will replace my morning coffee with pepto as a preemptive move!

in Why PR? on Marketing Begins At Home
That is solid. But I think that, while relationships ARE huge, they're only part of the puzzle. This is obvious, but you need someone who, in addition to the street cred, hub status, has the smart blend of creativity and strategy to plug the client into that network in a way that makes sense for all involved. Your hub grows in value, influencer has interest in client, awareness of client is raised.

If you plug any client into the network that is willing to write a check, your network loses its value over time.

You know this, but just wanted to expand on this.

Arrgh! You got one too?! Pay it on time or, as you know, it doubles. It was great seeing you and I am glad you connected with the family via Skype. If I were you that would have been the best part as well.

in The Media & Social Media Series: The Cincinnati Enquirer on Social Media Explorer
Jason - Cincinnati Magazine also did a story on The Enquirer's efforts that you'll find of interest: http://www.cincinnatimagazine.com/article.aspx?... It was in their June issue so it will be archived soon (FWIW).

in Catch that train on Marketing Begins At Home
Well that digs up the whole training issue. PR folks in my experience spend the least on training. Not saying this is in all agencies...but in my experience anything not billable comes under scrutiny. If it incurrs a cost on top of that....GASP. We're cheap and missing the bigger picture/opportunity.

Either way I like the new theme. Clean. With a small wink to 2.0.

Cool quote. Congrats.

Indeed, there is no FREE. And am I the only one who thinks Jello should snap up this company and dust off Bill Cosby to advertise for it? Probably.

in Consider yourself warned on Marketing Begins At Home
Here's the bumper sticker:

Don't Pitch. Participate.

The big problem I forsee is that it takes time. And, while the end result is well worth the time, time is money.

Clients see technology speeding things up, but in a lot of ways its requiring PR people to "slow things down." More outlets, more opportunities, more customization. Yet few are managing client expectations accordingly.

To recap: Jeremiah is right. But client expectations need to change. We make that happen. We define them. Then we manage them. Then we exceed them.

What's your take?

in Just curious on Marketing Begins At Home
Fine minds...I just noted the curious uptick in bad pitches while everyone is out of the office enjoying vacations and such. Coincidence? Probably. But old rules for new tools will get you no results and plenty of trouble.

in The raw deal on Marketing Begins At Home
My daughter is even hopping online and watching the show at Disney or Nick Jr. BEFORE it hits TV. The desire for immediate fulfillment is being, er, fulfilled immediately.

The other difference with "kids today" is they have no problem watching one episode...multiple times. It's how I learn more kids tunes than I care to admit. How else does my two year old son know some of the words to "Push It" from the movie "Jump In?" (Besides the fact that he's frickin' brilliant).

in Accomplishment is What Matters on Chris Brogan
Reminds me of a coworker from long ago. He knew ALL of the rules, every. single. one...in exacting detail. But he did not know how to play the game.

He spent more time documenting why something didn't work instead of simply figuring out plan B-Z.

in Why do we blog? on Marketing Begins At Home
My favorite part of the book Citizen Marketers? It gave me a name for all of this: "productive leisure."

My blog does not monetize, it does not reinforce an agency's rep, it does not show how good I am (as a solo practictioner). What's my end game? Productive Leisure.
