in McCain’s $300 million idea on The Colorado Independent
I was going to announce my new design for a "plasma bottle" energy storage system shortly but now I think I'll wait until McCain gets elected. Then the government can pay me $300,000,000 hush money while they sell it to the oil companies. Or some scenario like that.

You map is a mess. It shows 6 prisons in 8 Mile Park (next to CO9) with the rafting companies! Five of them should be on US50 east of Ca?

in Health Care Reform Finally Takes the Stage on The Colorado Independent
Lamm's right from my experience on an insurance advisory committee for the Colorado Springs Utilities. One of the commonest comments was "they" (choose any allegedly high risk group: gays, obese, those with numerous offspring, or smokers) would run costs up. The misconceptions are legion.

In fact, in any large group plan, less than 10% of the covered incur 90% of the cost of claims. Usually due to catastrophic illnesses like cancer, life-threatening diabetes, accident, and other crises. A never-ending battle is the effort by other insurees to force those claimants into a "special group" to reduce costs. The statistical analysis of this measure was that individual premiums would drop maybe 5% or so but the "outcasts"'s cost would actually make it cheaper for them to pay the hundreds of thousands of medical care out of pocket than pay the disastrous premiums they would require.

Then there are the "opt outs": "I don't need no insurance 'cause I won't get sick so give me the money." Until they get a serious illness or condition. Or family. Then these lawyers mysteriously appear.

Which illustrates the [nonprofit] insurance concept "shared risk". Group medical insurance is based on this concept. The larger the group, the bigger the spread of risk. The ultimate humane solution is one-payer, universal insurance.

But forcing insurance on everyone is not the way. A plan like Medicare (which I am, incidentally, being, for all practical purposes, forced to join) with fixed and defined costs and benefits would be perfect. And if you don't join, you are on your own. No one sues Medicare for not forcing coverage if they decline.

Interestingly our county Dem party called my wife, a caucus attendee, asking her to attend the COUNTY assembly! At the caucus (I was a "guest".), two volunteers for delegate had to be bumped to alternate. Where'd these people go?

This sucks! I was so glad when I finally caught up with your columns again. And this. What a bummer. <sigh>

Your political analyses were insightful and knowledgeable. You'll be sorely missed and likely not just by me.

We're gonna need luck finding another source of Colorado political goings-on who has the network you had. Unfortunately, those most likely to do the job well sell out to become lobbyists!

Good luck in your new career. I hope you find it boring and give it up soon so we can have you back! :)

How soon can we Agnew this guy? OTOH, all those reporters writing snarky columns (present company excepted, of course) will have to start actually going back to attending meetings, interviewing, and boring stuff like that. Oh, the burden!

Think about this: what if McCain dies in office? President Bruce. Nice ring, eh?

Gotta go and forward this post to everywhere.

in Divesting in Iran Could Prove a Problem for Public Pensions on The Colorado Independent
Sorry, Jim, but this is one of the few times I disagree with you (Unless you are just reporting facts without any personal opinion, in which case, I disagree with just that other bunch.). There is no proven evidence, just jingoism and innuendo, of Iran doing all these nasty things. The Iranians just pissed some people off in the White House. I recall another nation with a similar name who did the same thing; similar results, too.

Fortunately going slow will do two things: help prevent precipitating WWIII and keep my pension afloat. The former is much more important, IMO.

Did the right thing Good point. This is exactly what Jesus did in places and times of worship and advocated to his disciples: cut off the centurion's ear when being arrested, take up arms against persecution, and stone those who fall. That "turn the other cheek" stuff is just window dressing.

If we weren't meant to defend ourselves violently, God wouldn't have given us MAC-10s.
