in Cloud computing makes me nervous on Technovia
It sounds like there is a market in the middle - something between CorporateClouds and HomeClouds as Jonathan describes. I'd pay for something with the service of Google+MobileMe and some of the roll-your-own aspects of MovableType.

ianbetteridge I think that Microsoft's Live Mesh is aiming to be something like that - synchornised storage system plus developer API for syncing data across the cloud, without the cloud being the only place it exists. If that makes sense.

in Try out RememberTheMilk - coming (soon!) to iPhone on Technovia
Hey Ian, if cross-platform-ness wasn't something that I needed, which would you say is the best - Omni or Milk?

ianbetteridge That's a really tricky one, and depends on how you like to organise yourself. If you're looking for a simple set of to do lists, I'd definitely go Milk. If, on the other hand, you want something that lets you do full-on GTD style organising, with contexts, then Omnifocus.

That is interesting - not sure Linkedin is the best network to start with though for a few reasons (it represents a very formal public 'face' for most people). Ents page with last.fm filtered news would be great though.

in Why you should almost never re-write your software on The Equity Kicker
We're refactoring some code at the moment, in parallel to implementing revised parts of the site as we go. New build delivery time frequency slows a bit, but we can still add and change bits if urgent - much preferred to 'closed for refurbishment'. Features + Cleanup + bigger load handling - do hate the "chuck money at server bottleneck" approach.

in Musings on open-ness, extensibility and the writeable web on The Equity Kicker
I think the more recent changes to making software more accessible have been in the degrees of involvement. Previously it was picking a template style - or - hacking one together from scratch. No inbetween, no learning curve, just high level or low level involvement.

Now, you can pick a style, tinker with the elements, add widgets, dig into the style sheet (much easier to tweak than editing ALL the templates for example), connect to other data feeds, re-use the outputted content in other software or sites ...all the way to digging into code.

This smooth transition from shallow to deep involvement, even if you break things and have to reinstall on the way, is really enabling many more people to 'do their thing' now. It's great!

That's better. Isn't the Eye due to be taken down fairly soon? I'm sure I remember it only having a 'lifespan' of 8 or 10 years or something?

Hi - just a quick note from TIOTI. Yes, we've had a beta running since Nov 2006 to be accurate and we've got 18,000 users on that with many many left waiting. The reason? We took on a lot of feedback, and did some major reworking, redesigning and is just about ready to see the light of day.

We'll be launching the new, lovely, no-invite-required version at the end of June or thereabouts.
