You said it yourself - these are soap operas! Only they're on when we're home and can actually watch, and they have much better lighting. Better acting too, most of the time. It's brilliant!

As for the mystery arc, these mysteries arc over the season, not over the episode - so it still works! Although, it is riskier since if the mystery blows, so does the whole season...
