in “Big Brother” Google Steps on SEOs on Level343's Blog
We can get mad, yell and scream, and write post about how much we don't like what Google does but what will really happen. They control the lion's share of the search market and they are way too big to ignore for your own efforts and certainly for your clients.
Google has always maintained that the only thing that will make you rank well is good content. SEO's have tried analyzing keyword density, how Googlw determines PageRank, and other tactics to game the system and Google has to respond by changing its tactics. If people focused on good content with a few basic tactics thrown in for good measure it would benefit everybody as a whole.

Disclaimer: I am going to school majoring in Internet Marketing so I can learn good SEO. I'm not a hypocrite, I just want to know the basic tactics so I know what to add to good content.

JRPittman Chris - I can't say that I disagree. I really can't. For a long time we have pushed good content, with a set of "best practices" mixed in. Optimized website code? Absolutely - it's just plain good practice, and it makes it easier for blind people to visit as well. Linking throughout the site? Again, a no brainer. Even link building has its uses as long as it isn't overdone. One of the things I say to our clients, however, is this: what good is a lot of traffic if your content stinks? It's what keeps people coming - not the links, not the ranking, not the PR. My opinion of what should be done matches SEOWebHelp's comment almost exactly. Instead of stomping on SEOs in general, go hit the top 20. If you find black hat tactics, fine them and leave the others alone. Now, we may not be able to do anything in the long run other than let Google know we're unhappy - but that's the point. SEOs may not be able to afford ignoring Google all together with client websites, but - you know how Google is always watching the sites? Well, Google needs to know that we're watching THEM... and not always just to find out what hoops we should jump through.

Thanks for the comment, Chris, and good luck on getting the major!

in Why Facebook is Failing Me on sarahintampa
I think the thing is that Facebook never intended for people to use it professionally and they have setup a provision for that called Pages. It's not perfect but it does help to reduce some of the clutter and digita noise. They also are supposedly introducing a groups feature to let you group people based on criteria you choose. This one feature would help me tremendously because I could take out many of my 'online only' friends updates out of my feed and just have ones from my 'real life' friends.
I think the professional users of Facebook make up a small enough number that Facebook is not too worried about offending them. I think that their business model relies on making that larger group of regular people happy and I can't say that I blame them. I'm a real estate agent and I've been tempted to put my listings on Facebook but have resisted the urge. I usually just Tweet a link to a new listing and that updates my status and that is about it for my property marketing on Facebook. I think it is better to connect with people and develop relationships with them and through notes, news feed post, and video let them get to know you. You can show off your real estate knowledge and your personality and when they need an agent they will find you.

in 2008/07/25/old-media-deathrace-5000/ on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
My company had a private TV network that used to broadcast on DirectTV. Early last year they shut it down and now they stream the shows over the net. It cost significantly less and there is an option to download a DVD .iso of each broadcast that you can then burn and show on a TV at the office.

As more people understand how online advertising works they will learn that this is just fluff by the media. This just shows that they are more focused on crap than the real issues.

Adam Ostrow yea, part of it is definitely the media trying to make a story out of something that really isn't there to serve their political agenda. Which, sort of sucks since the media in theory isn't supposed to have a political agenda, but that's how it seems to be ....

Dugg, Stumbled, shared on Facebook, and published on Newsvine. This is an incredible story and this need to get out. It could be disastrous for millions of students.

in FAP726: Job Expert Jason Alba On Your Career on Financial Aid Podcast Weekly Internet Radio Show
This was a great show. I especially loved the advice for using a blog to "sweep your digital dirt under the rug". I even went and changed my blog, TechChris.com, to put my full name on each post. My blog is already the top result for name on Google but I want to do everything I can to keep it there and this tip will help in that regard. Keep up the good work and know that the Financial Aid Podcast will always have a place in my iTunes library.

in Improve Your Social Network on Chris Brogan
I've been really surprised with some of the connections I have made on my social networks. I've used them to reconnect with people I had lost touch with, I've gotten together with with some one and did an unconference, I even spawned the whole idea of PodCamp New Orleans 2008. You have to be willing to put in some time building and PARTICIPATING in the network to get any advantage from it.
People who are friend collectors(I've been one in the past) on some networks, like the TopLinked people on LinkedIn, have a different agenda than most of us when joining a network. They are in sort of online popularity contest. It's impossible to keep in touch on a regular basis with 15,000 people, 400 or 500 would be difficult.
Chris Penn brought up a good point on a recent Financial Aid podcast about the value of these people to the network. They create very large and well connected mesh networks that can help you get access to people you wouldn't normally have access to.
Think about what you want to achieve from your network and make that your focus when building it.

in [RL] Fighting for New Orleans on Chelpixie.com
We are going to have a phenomenal PodCamp New Orleans. I've been busy working on s Road Home Unconference and blogging and reading about DA Eddie Jordan but PodCamp work starts in earnest in mid-August. We are going to do a trial run the end of August by podcasting the Rising Tide conference which will be held the last weekend of August. Try to make it if you are in town.

in Windows Vista vs. Mac OSX, the two-hour definitive word on Scobleizer
This should be some interesting video. I'm going to be joining the ranks of Mac users very shortly. I'm tired of buying spyware and virus software and I want interoperability with the iPhone when it launches.
