in Greenback crumbling since Fed rate cut on AMERICAblog
There are few reasons left to hold US$ now. Look for the exchange rate to plunge and oil to be priced in Euros in the near future. When the Great Garage Sale of US corporate assets is concluded in 18 mos. - 2 years time, there won't be much paid employment left aside from retail and services employment, government employment, and financial services. I cannot believe that an imperial country could go down so fast without some sort of coherent response. It took Rome hundreds of years to fully liquidate: this could be done in 5 years. I have clearly underestimated the dumbness of American officialdom.

in SEC oversight? What SEC oversight? What oversight, period? on AMERICAblog
At the risk of overstatement, is it perhaps not time to ask what IS working in the United States? The list of dysfunctional institutions is now longer than the average arm and seems to be growing longer day by day. From the outside, I'm afraid the typical expectation of American institutions now is that they are all well and truly buggered up in the service of some religion-like theory of possessive individualism that shall not be restrained by law or regulation. For all intents and purposes, we might be tempted to assume that if its American, it doesn't work properly. Cars, banks, schools, elected representatives, army...you name it, its cruddy. Much like Japanese goods in the immediate postwar period... plastic, shoddy, and worth ever bit of 35 cents. It is breathtaking how fast the decline in performance of American institutions has been. Please explain in 35 words or less. And while you are contemplating your answer, the band will be playing Nearer My God to Thee featuring the stylings of soloist Ayn Rand.

In the transition to universal single payer status in Canada and then later the termination of extra billing, there were several doctor's strikes or job actions and one was of the utmost seriousness (covered in a book called Doctors' Strike by Robin Badgely). I think you would be wise to anticipate this sort of thing happening and figure out in advance how to deal with it.

in Over-exposed Flash Shots with Tamron AF 17-50 F/2.8 XR Di II on Digital Photography Tips and Techniques
No, I haven't noticed any under-exposure because I bought SB600 just recently. Before that, I used the D80 build-in flash which has a guide number of 13. Given the max aperture f/3.5 of the lens, the built-in flash only reaches 3.71m. So 3.98m is beyond its capacity anyway.

I will do some test using my SB600, and let you know the result.

picmax If you increase ISO on the camera, it can reach further than 3.71m. So 3.98m is not necessarily its limit.

You know where that very important $700-billion figure came from?
Here's a quote from that Forbes story:
"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."

Really nice discovery and analysis. I found out that my nikon 18-135 lens also gives incorrect distance information. For distance less than 3.98m, it reports correctly. For distance more than 3.98m, it always reports 3.98m.

I have checked some pictures taken by other people using this nikon 18-135 lens. They share the same problem. If fact I haven't found out any sample taken by this lens with recorded focus distance larger than 3.98m.

picmax Very interesting.

Do you have flash exposure problem with this lens? I'd expect it to under-expose for subject more than 3.98m away in TTL-BL mode.

in Announcing the new and improved Liliputer Database on Liliputing
It would be nice if the database listed the wireless chipset for each laptop. This is really important to know if you plan to install a different OS.

For example:

Aspire one: Atheros AR5006EG
EeePC 700/900: Atheros AR5007EG (RF2425)
EeePC 1000: Ralink rt2860
Cloudbook CE1200V: Realtek RTL8187

arun21 IE8 takes up SO MUCH memory when working.. Chrome takes up the least out of all of them. (And Chrome is 13% faster in tests over Firefox). IE still the slowest as it uses so much legacy code.

So then you agree that Congress, through independent analysis and opinion, voted to approve the Iraq resolution of 2002? Use that as a starting point to see if you're up to intelligent conversation.

Chuck-dips :

Everything's going better than 8 years ago - considering the systemic shock from 9/11. It's a shame the obvious connections between "listening to more of your conversations", "torture" and the war on psycho-Islam are completely lost on you. Now step away from the computer and get back behind the counter - three customers are waiting on their lattes.

in Bad Economy? Not So Far, Although Good Luck Reading About It on Captain's Quarters Comments
Eh -

Clinton's "spot-on" GDP was based on the internet bubble - after the speculative collapse, GDP fell to the floor, along with any supposed "surplus." Is current growth stable? Yes. Does current tax policy promote growth and increase revenue to the gubmint? Yes.

I believe we'll see recession if the Dems can implement their MO - increased taxes and pork. We're already seeing the pork, but once new taxes (or elimination of breaks) hit we'll see business spending pullbacks, increased unemployment and higher prices. It's bad enough to see food prices spiral due to bogus energy policies - the current ethanol stupidity (courtesy protective tariffs) is nothing but grief.

in Enough With The Rainbow Tables: What You Need To Know About Secure Password Schemes on Matasano Chargen
Does it make sense to do the following?

whenever a password is created-
1) generate have a 'fixed' seed table for each password char (random seeds per char... can be 2-20 seeds for a 1 char password)
2) append seed to password (in any variation)
3) generate hash, append the number of seeds used per char in clear.
4) hash with MD5 for the fun of it.

so whenever the server has to decrypt, it has to recreate the table based on number of seeds and do a brute force itself to derive at the password. }:)

Then we can simulate the web version of "Windows Loading".

in FOX ATTACKS! Iran on FOX Attacks!
Regardless of Fox's spin on things, Iran is a problem that isn't just going to go away.

It blows me away that you idiots spend so much time focusing your efforts on what a news network does. Why don't you look at what the left and the right have to say about something and make your own, objective, opinion, instead of dismissing everything that is said because they are warmongers.

Although, I suspect the average, and even above-average, American is not smart enough to accomplish this.

You're doing nothing more than adding to the rhetoric.

Idiots, all of you.
