The penalty was just. It is immature of Man U to cry about it. It was a hand-ball in the box. That is a penalty. You even got away with it once, so don't complain when you get called for it the second time. Chelsea outplayed Man U. Maybe Chelsea won't win the title but only a sore loser from Man U would complain about the penalty and claim that Chelsea didn't deserve to win.

What are you talking about? The first goal was completely onsides. All players were level with each other, and according to the rules, that is onside. The offsides call was tehnically correct, but ridiculous nonetheless. Neither player touched the ball or did much of anything after Essien shot it and the keeper had room to move in either direction. The penalty awarded to Chelsea was also just, and Drogba's second goal was well earned. Chelsea deserved the win, and I wish them luck in the final against United.

This is a **** result. Fiorentina dominated from what I can see, and they are definitely the better team. I also think there were a few times when they should have been given a penalty kick but weren't.

Yeah, that's why Chelsea beat them 2-1 in a game that Chelsea dominated. Remember that Man U only scored because of a momentary lapse in concentration that resulted in a gift-wrapped goal. Man U will probably win the Premier League, but as far as the UEFA cup goes, if you insist on continuing to underestimate Chelsea, they are going to dominate your A S S again.;)

It was an ok game, both teams played hard, but conditions kept the game from being the spectacle it could have been. Ronaldo is overrated. Cech made saves for Chelsea, but Chelsea also hit the woodwork several times. It was an evenly played match. I feel bad for Lampard, he deserved the title more than anyone else on the pitch. Congrats to Man U. Good luck to both teams next year!

Nice sportsmanship dude. I wasn't just talking about today. I know he plays well, but he has a pretty big ego, at least in my opinion, and he falls all around the pitch trying to win favors from the ref. I don't respect people like that. He usually ends up choking in big games and, although he played well for much of the game today, his penalty was ridiculous. That was one of the biggest stops I've ever seen and he still couldn't beat Cech. That is my opinion and others are welcome to differ in that opinion, but cusing at me or calling me retarded is inappropriate. Other than that, once again good game to both teams and congrats to Man U.

Ok, perhaps I should further clarify my statement. I never meant to imply that Ronaldo is not a great player, I just don't think he is the best in the world as so many people claim. He had a great season it is true, but I think he has some maturing to do before he can be called the best in the world. I think the reason he so often chokes in big games is because he does not have control over his nerves in the same way that more veteran players do, and I think this point was proven when he botched his penalty kick. Given a few more years and a bit more growing up, he could become the best in the world, but I am hesitant to claim that he already is.

If Man U are truly better than Chelsea, they wouldn't have needed sudden death in the PSO to prove it and they wouldn't have lost to Chelsea a few weeks ago.
Drogba's behavior in this game was less than stellar, but I've also seen a lot of class from him in the past.
Ronaldo is not the best. He might be some day, but he isn't yet.

I believe that the match was evenly played, and I really have only one complaint - the first handball. The second handball may or may not have been called. I can understand why it wasn't called, because the arm was basically attached to his chest. The first handball, however, was blatant and the Swiss should have gotten a pk from it. Vondosmanoff, with all due respect, intention has no place in a ref's decision making process. I'm sure no player "intends" to committ a foul in the penalty area, but it happens. The handball was one of the most obvious I have ever seen, and regardless of whether or not it was "intentional," it happened and should have resulted in a pk for the Swiss.

The Czech goal was onside, and so they deserved that goal. Switzerland got lots of chances, but just dominating possession and getting lots of chances doesn't mean you deserve anything. You have to score, and that is the ONLY statistic that matters at the end of the game.

Again, the Swiss deserved a pk, and so my belief is that the match should have ended 1-1.

Ok, I get really irritated whenever someone says this. First, Materazzi was sent off unjustly. He committed a foul but it certainly did not deserve a red card. Italy dominated the game when the numbers were even, and Australia is so supremely lucky that they didn't find themselves a goal down earlier in the game. Even after Materazzi was sent off, Australia failed to score. Finally, if you look closely, you will see that Grosso was actually tripped up by the Aussie's arm. Australia lost to a superior team and you just need to get over it.

Now, I do believe that Holland's first goal should have been disallowed, and that may have changed the momentum of the game, but the Italians simply didn't play today,a nd no one can claim that they don't deserve the victory.

Whyh should France have won? Italy put the ball in the back of the net more and that is all that matters. Sure, maybe the French appeared more dominant, but keep in mind that the Italians had played a more difficult game in the semis than France. Germany, the host nation, was a superior opponant than Portugal, and Italy played Germany for 120 minutes while France played Portugal for 90 minutes. Italy would have been more fatigued than France and that can affect your performance. France didn't score, and Italy won the PSO, fair and square.

Please tell me how Italy "cheated." The only call you can question is the PK against Australia and if you look closely, you would see that the Aussie's arm had made contact with Grosso's leg. The Aussie made no contact with the ball and brought Grosso down. That is a PK. Now, Materazzi was sent off in that same game after an offense that did not deserve a red card. In the final, Malouda dived and got a PK for it. I don't understand how anyone can claim that Italy cheated. You don't want to see the truth because you let your bias affect your judgement. Get over the fact that you lost in the World Cup and accept that Italy won the title fair and square. Stop being a bad sport, that isn't what football is about.

I hate biased statements, and that is what this is. Germany's first goal was not offides. Klose was level with the Polish defender when he received the ball, and Podolski was behind Klose when Klsoe passed it to him. The Polsih "equilizer" WAS offside; barely, but it was; besides, it wasn't scored anyways until well after play had stopped.

There is one flaw in your logic, and this is what Dutch fans don't seem to compehend. You keep saying that the rule is there to prevent defenders from simply "stepping off the field." I completely agree with you, however, Panucci did not "step off the field," he was knocked off. The rule includes the word "deliberate" for a reason. If the defender is off the field not of his own accord, than he cannot be expected to assist in defense and therefore cannot be considered "active." This is the case with Panucci. He does not fit into the required description of "deliberately" off the field for a goal to be upheld, and as such, the goal should have been disallowed.

In any case, it doesn't matter now. I would encourage everyone to stop focusing on this one call and worry about the upcoming games instead.

Toni was perfectly onside, and as he was the one who scored the goal, that is all that matters. Italy should have gotten the first goal, in my opinion. Other than that, hats off to Romania for superb performance in one of the most difficult groups ever to exist in a final tournament.

Ahem, I believe the result speaks for itself. I'm sure you will come up with about three excuses as to why Italy should have lost, you always do every time Italy wins...

For the record, I don't generally make excuses for my teams when they lose. Did I make excuses for Italy when they lost to France in the first leg of the qualifiers? Did I make excuses when they drew with Lithuania? No. What I DO do is defend my teams from your attacks when they win.

A true mark of sportsmanship is how well someone loses, and I have rarely seen such sportsmanship towards Italy. Everyone complains about how Australia should have won, or France should have won, or Scotland should have won. No one is willing to see that perhaps the decisions that went Italy's way were legit and perhaps Italy didn't always get the decisions they should have gotten. Most people let their personal bias interfere with their judgement, especially when it comes to Italy. I really truly will never understand the hatred towards Italy. I can only hope that in the future, win or lose, people will be gracious towards Italy and respect them for the talented team they are.

First, Germany played better. Portugal were able to string together a few good chances, but overall, the game was dominated by the Germans.

Second, you can't seriously expect to be able to complain about every little push and shove. This isn't fucking basketball or some shit, it's football we're talking about here. Ballack's "push" was something that happens all the time, and you need to get over it.

Third, maybe Ronaldo did get his foot stepped on, but he still acted like a pussy. That is exactly why he isn't the "best player in the world." He needs to grow up before he deserves that title.

I find it hilarious that anyone honestly thinks that Australia was the better team in 2006. And if you look at Grosso being brought down in the area at the end of the game, you may notice that the Aussie made no contact with the ball but his arm made contact with Grosso's leg. You need to just accept that Australia lost fair and square to a superior team.

I agree with you for the most part, although I wouldn't call Ballack's nudge a "major infraction." The officials have been less than impressive in this tournament, and yes, even though I am an Italy fan, I will readily admit that Italy got away with a lot against Spain.

Um, what teams are you talking about? Italy WON the most difficult qualifying group for Euro 2008 while losing only one match in the process. At Euro they made it out of the most difficult group and lost in a shootout to the eventual champions, and currently the number 1 ranked team. Over the past few years Italy has defeated teams like Portugal, Ukraine, Scotland. What has Brazil done? Well, let's see. They lost to Venezuala and Paraguay and Portugal. They barely beat Sweden and Ireland and Switzerland. These are all rather embarassing results. Don't you feel silly now?

The indication of how good a team is comes from overall performance, not individual games. Brazil is playing well in the olympics so far, but they have yet to play a team that is actually good (and, for that matter, to actually win the gold medal). Italy's loss to Belgium doesn't change the fact that Italy's performance over the past several years has greatly exceeded that of Brazil. I mean, seriously, who loses to Venezuela?

Pretty sure Brazil just got hammered by Argentina 3-0. So Brazil still doesn't have a gold medal, lost to the first good team they played, and has had rather poor results for the past few years. Overrated? Definitely.

Italy is not the perfect team, but at least they don't embarass themselves and then claim they are the best in the world. When they lost to the Netherlands in Euro 2008, they were missing their best player, and Holland's first goal was arguably offside. Luca Toni scored a perfectly legitimate goal against Romania that was deemed offside. Italy went on to beat France and then lose in a shootout to the eventual champions. You call that a poor performance?

I rest my case.

um, newsflash buddy, you are NOT currently the reigning world champions and it has been several years since you held that title. My original comment that Brazil IS overrated is based on the current team, which is why I said "Brazil IS overrated," and not, "Brazil WAS overrated." The current Brazilian team does not deserve the rather high rankings that it is still receiving. All Brazil fans seem to still be stuck on past glory that ended over half a decade ago.

As a Chelsea fan I am pleased with the win, but I must say that I hope the defense tightens up a bit; they looked vulnerable. Also, congrats to Wigan on a good game, they are a dangerous team right now. I'm looking forward to a good season!

The home nations suck right now. I'm a Scotland fan and I would like to say that they are the best British team right now, especially after their performance in the qualifiers for Euro 2008, but Burley hasn't been doing well so far, and the label of being the best British team doesn't mean much right now anyways.

Bayern should have won this game. From what I can see, they were the dominant team, creating more chances, plus Lyon's best chances and goal came off of set pieces. Bayern also should have had a penalty kick in the first half. Nevertheless, a well played game.
