Great post- reminds me of a situation I was in recently. In one of my MBA classes, we had to come up with a target market for a product- we decided to target a certain age of women, with families. A response I got from a classmate (who, in his defense, was NOT by any means a marketer) was "yeah but what about men? Don't we want them to buy it too?"

ideally, we want everyone to buy our product, but marketing to people that are less likely to buy it is a waste of resources, and mostly "clutter" to them.

Great post! I really enjoyed it! I completely agree that companies need to ease into the conversation and listen, wait until somebody asks for a solution to a problem that the company's product will solve. Then they can step in and say, yes, I can help you!

Great post! When talking to our target audience- we must know what they know. And the reality is, many don't know what Twitter is, nor do they care- they will not benefit from it.

I hadn't heard about this, thanks for sharing! In my opinion, I don't think Coke's strategy failed at all. People were talking about it, and then a debate was started, giving them another reason to talk about it. To me, this is successful social media marketing.

Excellent point- reputation management is becoming more and more important these days, especially with the increased popularity of blogs, and how well google are ranking them. A popular blog can easily place bad publicity of a company on the first page of a Google Search result for that company name.
