"My girlfriend is one of those who probably could not tell you who the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Nancy Pelosi) is, or for that matter our Representative (Tammy Baldwin) but could tell you who won American Idol this past season (David Cook, but I direct a newscast that follows American Idol, so I saw the ending.)"

From the Girlfriend:

For the record... yes, I couldn't tell you who the Speaker of the House, or who or representative is. And yes, I can tell you who won American Idol this year, although I couldn't tell you who won last year or the years before. I read books as often as I have time. I was in the top of my class in high school. Yes, I said high school, and the only reason I don't currently hold a college degree is because college is just plainly too expensive and when you are paying for it on your own, it makes it a lot harder to complete.

Almost nothing on the news is pleasant. That is why I do not watch. I'm not trying to shelter myself from who has been elected into which office. I'm trying to shelter myself from the pain of other people out there. I can't even begin to imagine the pain in their lives, but I can barely deal with the problems in my own life, let alone take on that of others. Yes, I am lucky, I am not among the flooded, the forest fires, or great disasters, and I am thankful for that. I choose not to immerse myself in them, and not to remind myself daily through a newspaper, or the 6 different newscasts that play throughout the day how horrible the world is around me. Some may call me sheltered from the real world, but what it really comes down to is that I have plenty of things to focus on around me than to worry about things I can't do anything about. Don't get me wrong, I do care. I've done my share of charity works for those in need. I just choose to not focus on these things.

While this was a wonderful and appropriate rant by my boyfriend, it left myself, the girlfriend, sounding a little stupid. So, I just needed to clarify that I am a very intelligent woman that chooses not to bother myself with certain things that I personally can have little or no impact on.

Thank you.
