in Top 10 Anti-Piracy Weapons For Future Use In Somalia on gCaptain
If it continues, those Blackwater folks may find some new customers. Might be a bargain, relative to the ransom, for a shipper to carry a small squad of guys who really like guns, really know how to use them, and know they can sleep nights after having used them, eh?

They could use a few of these off the Somali coast.

in Fire Gear Locker - The Halligan Tool on gCaptain
I WISH I could justify having this tool aboard my 22' fiberglass C-Dory, but I'd probably just drop it and accidentally hull the boat! :-)

in gCaptain Birthday Givaway on gCaptain
I love how gCaptain has become THE place to go for commercial maritime news. Oh, and I like it when gCaptain links to Navagear! :-)

in Photo Of The Week - S/V Concordia on gCaptain
I looked at it and something was "wrong", so I went to look at the original, in the large size, and YIKES! The foreground vs. vessel scale doesn't work, the cloud doesn't really work, somehow, and the sunlight on the tops of the sails conflicts with the starry sky on the right. And then when you zoom in, you see the rough cut-n-paste edges, and...I say get rid of it.

in Hitler’s Titanic - MS Wilhelm Gustloff on gCaptain
Thanks for the post. I had never heard of this disaster. Titanic, Lusitania, Bismark, Edmund Fitzgerald...THEM I've heard of! Funny how this little 9,000-casualty event escapes ones notice.

in Australia’s Shocking Footage of Japanese Whaling - Video on gCaptain
I love meat, and I love fish. I even eat some mammals, especially delicious swine.
But big-game hunters in modern, civilized countries generally harvest mature males only. Even crab fisherman return the juveniles and females. The regulations require it, and everybody pretty much "gets it" why this might be important.
So what the hell's the matter with the Japanese Whaling Institute? I'm with the Australians on this one. Go to the mat with these guys.
Notice this argument doesn't even require that we acknowledge that whales might be "sentient" in the way we humans are. If that's the case, then they might actually have "rights", and killing them might be "murder".
I don't know anything about that. I'm just saying that good fish and wildlife management demands exercising reasonable restraint about what you harvest.

in Interesting Ship Of The Week - Geared Funicular Railway on gCaptain
That's pretty neat, John, but THAT'S NO SHIP! It's a geared funicular railway!
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :-)
