in Nancy Pelosi’s Hair is Not Newsworthy on Menstrual Poetry
But WHY is physical beauty fair game? Is there any justifiable reason? I can't think of one.

Well here is one reason that was rather compelling for me. The Dalai Lama once wrote that our mental state has a very discernible effect on our physical state. I think his point is that if you're having a bad hair day, it's possibly because it started with a bad mind day. Secondly, people implicitly understand this truth. A person that takes good care of his/her body gives the impression that he/she also takes good care of other things in his/her life. The more that a position requires human interaction and public relations, the more physical beauty is a factor. Compare celebrities and business executives with academics and writers. I'd say all of these livelihoods are very important to society and culture, however physical attractiveness is more of a factor of success when a role requires more social interaction. The only problem I see with this is glorifying physical attractiveness as the only factor, which is really damaging to people's self-esteem. Even successful modeling requires the right attitude, if anyone hasn't seen Tyra Banks' show. I don't think the Huffington Post article doing this. I think they're just trying to get clicks. My final point is that everyone judges everyone by physical beauty in real life (in person, not on the phone or through E-mail). Before you open your mouth in an interview, or before you approach someone in a bar, you look at each other, and, unfortunately judge them. Maybe we shouldn't be so judgmental in this way, but there's no way around it. Otherwise we wouldn't take showers, comb our hair, or even wear clothes for that matter.

The style updates were exactly why I flat-out quit reading HuffPo. I can get my news elsewhere, like NPR and the BBC, and not be subjected to bullshit like that.

Very timely book review, because this:
"As we take our first few steps into adulthood we are often told that now is the time to “grow up.” To get serious about our futures, get a stable job that we are most likely going to hate in a few months "
is exactly where I am in my life right now

EXCELLENT theory. I really like it, and think it makes sense.
So then the question is, who was supposed to be the leader?
Also - it sounds like Charles Widmore banned Penelope and Desmond from England? At least, that's the way Penny made it seem at the beginning of the episode. What is up with that? All will be revealed, I suppose.

I don't personally think that they were banned so much as they were just terrified of him and worried about what he would do to Desmond, with him knowing that Des had been to the island.

in Animal rights, welfare, and abolition on Ryan McReynolds
Okay, so I'm not a vegan, although I would consider being vegan one day, but it took me 12 years to go lacto-ovo vegetarian, so I'm not pushing it yet. It's going to be a long journey, and I'm okay with that.
Anyway, I guess that disclaimer is up there because I am admittedly not well-read in a lot of animal-rights stuff, even though I quit eating meat because of animal rights. It's just an area that doesn't have my full attention right now, although I really should get more focused on it.
Okay, now the point of my comment: I am a little confused - are you saying that abolitionists should, in fact support PETA? It seems to me that you're saying that PETA should be supported for their intentions, although we should be aware of and critical about their methods.
I do not support PETA now, and I would not support PETA if I became a vegan. Just because you disagree with meat and fur does not mean you have the right to smash windows in restaurants or throw paint on someone's coat. Yes, I consider wearing fur abhorrent, but that does not give me the right to destroy someone else's personal property or business. It just doesn't. I can't support a group that thinks such behavior is okay.
And even though it has been years since a PETA person threw paint on a fur coat (I think), their constant objectification of women in recent ads and protests turns me off from them completely. Yes, these women consented to be in these ads, or to objectify themselves in these protests, but that doesn't change the fact that the higher ups at PETA think such objectification is okay to be on display. And it doesn't make it okay that PETA's president is a woman, because women can objectify each other if they buy into the idea that objectification is okay.
Even if I upped my animal rights activism, I would not support or associate with PETA in any way. Same if I was a vegan. Because their goals are not consistent with mine. While we both value animal rights, they are okay with the objectifcation of women and of sexist advertising practices, and in the past they have been okay with the destruction of personal property for political reasons.
Okay, I'm sorry to get ranty if I misunderstood your post. I just have very strong feelings about PETA and why I could never support them - while we have one goal in common, I find their methods unacceptable.

You slighty misunderstood my post. I was not suggesting anybody
support PETA. I only mention PETA because they're big and relevant.
There may be cases in which PETA is behind a campaign that I might
agree with, but that would be coincidence.
As I've said in previous posts, I think the best way to look at PETA
is to constructively criticize the organization and consider members
as misguided but potential allies.
However, I do find it hard to understand someone's belief in the
principle of animal rights when they flagrantly violate them to
consume or otherwise use animals or animal products. It's really very
simple: if you accept animal rights then animals aren't ours to use,
and they don't much care how hard the "journey" is while they continue
to suffer and die for your eggs and dairy. Just stop and don't look
back. The key for me was to train myself to stop seeing those things
as food, the same way I wouldn't see human tissue or dog shit as food.
It's certainly easier with meat, but the cows and chickens behind
dairy and eggs end up at the slaughterhouse just the same, to say
nothing of what happens to the males...

in So, what are you doing Tuesday? on Bligbi
I'll be spending it out in Nacogdoches, doing a site visit of schools in the area, and then driving back to Austin. So it looks like I'll be spending the 4th in the classroom or in the car. I'm hoping to get back in time for a little revelry/sorrow-drowning, whichever it is.
I'm scared, too. I just can't wait for this to be over.

You know, if you hold of a few more days, National Novel Writing Month starts on November 1. Write your entire first draft in 30 days!! This will be my 4th year trying, and I'm pretty sure I'm actually gonna "win" (that is, bang out 50k) this year!
Also, Allyson will be making an appearance in Ohio December 23-29, although I imagine you will be spending much of that time in Athens with your family. But just FYI.

in Women DO Deserve Better, Women Deserve CHOICE on Menstrual Poetry
"IS THERE A WOMAN out there that does not want to be equal?"
Unfortunately, yes. There are women all over the world who believe that they are not/should not be equal to men. Not all women believe in equality, which is incredibly sad to me.
"I do not tolerate sexual harassment from either gender."
It's great that you don't. But guess what? There are men in the armed forces who DO. I just read a book called "Men Speak Out" in which one (male) writer documents the sexual harassment he sees leveled against women in the military. Just because you're not contributing does not mean it doesn't exist. Furthermore, just because you don't contribute doesn't mean you're helping the problem. Unless you're fighting to stop sexism and harassment in the military, the problem is not going to go away.
"Is pregnancy only right when one chooses to get pregnant?"
YES. Pregnancy is wrong if the fetus was conceived as a result of rape. Pregnancy is not right if the couple was taking precautions to not get pregnant and do not want the child. pregnancy is not right if the woman carrying it cannot even afford the healthcare she needs to carry the pregnancy to term. Children ARE a choice. I know that sonner or later (when I have enough money saved up to afford it), I'll be getting "fixed" so that I cannot have children. I can't wait for that! Pregnancy would NEVER be right for me.

Agreed – Having been to some of those places. However, I do not believe its gender specific either. Oppressed people, regardless of gender, often display that same attitude. One can look at the difference of opinion between women in Afghanistan as an example.
That issue is also not gender specific. Men and women in the military that do not occupy the role of warrior are often thought of as inferior etc… Having served in both roles, I can attest to this. I was recently on a military forum where some were discussing the recent award of the Combat Medical Badge to a woman and I was appalled at some of the things I read. I was also proud that some were supporting this, as that tells me some barrio are still dropping. IED, mortars, and suicide bombers are not gender specific. Women bleed on the battlefield the same as men. Attitudes and opinions are changed everyday, not as much by men who support equality in the military, as much as by women themselves displaying the qualities that earn them respect. I know what that sounds like, but understand, it’s that process which lends to beating down the barriers between gender and race. People standing up and people proving themselves will all add up in the end.
I’ve already stated that rape/incest is not a choice to bear a child. However, when I get in my vehicle to drive down the street, I know I might have an accident no matter how good a driver I am. Just as I know that when I have sex, even protected, there is a chance that I may be part of the conception of a child. We might debate this for awhile, as I stand by my belief that we all need to take responsibility for our actions. Being irresponsible and getting caught is no excuse, yet it happens in many aspects of peoples lives daily. Although our opinions on this topic may differ, I still support the freedom of choice for abortion. I also support other options to abortion. I might just add that I am human and I like sex, I also like to drive my vehicle(not intended as sexual innuendo).

Why do the rights of the embryo outweigh the rights of the person on which it is completely dependent? Why does an embryo have more rights than a 2-year-old child? What makes an embryo so special that its rights get to trump everybody else's?

Because we all were once an emryo. Just as to say if you were in New York in the morning and arrived in LA in the afternoon. Would you be more of a person in New York than LA? Of course not much in the same way you are the same person in the womb you just travel six inches down the birth canal when you are born.

"I've never gotten an abortion; I never had to, thanks to planned parentood."
Here, here!
Okay, I have good insurance coverage, so I go to this excellent women's health clinic rather than PP, but the point is still the same. I don't want to get pregnant, but I don't want to have an abortion. Fortunately, my pro-birth-control, pro-choice clinic has helped me figure out the best birth control methods to use so that I don't have to ever have an abortion.
(For the record, I would get an abortion if I found myself with an unwanted pregnancy. I'd just rather not have an unwanted pregnancy in the first place.)

in Another reason to hate PETA on Bligbi
As a soon-to-be vegetarian (I'm converting slowly and giving up one meat group at a time over the course of a year), I think groups such as PETA are the reason I struggled with my decision to give up meat for so long. And I've grown to dislike this organization more and more as years go by.
No, I don't think we should eat animals, but the reality is that most people are going to continue eating meat for at least another century or so. I'd rather concentrate my activism on making sure that free-range/organic/kosher/ethically treated meat was affordable to everyone. My fiancé only wants to eat Kosher (he's Jewish) meat, but we can't afford it right now; he'd settle for free-range meat, but even that's out of our price range. I think the best thing to do is to convince people who eat meat to buy local and work free-range into their budgets if possible, and find ways to lower prices on said products. That's going to be a huge step in the right direction.
Don't put people under display, especially not in ways that damage their health. Insteadm go after the actual problem. What's so difficult about that?
