in Six Simple Steps To Escape From Social Media on LucaFiligheddu.com
Luc,

Now, that's good advice. Hopefully, it will resonate with people. By the way, I wrote something related: http://www.markevanstech.com/2009/05/03/the-peril...

In terms of Internet-based media, I would suggest that sites such as NowPublic are filling the need to report "small news".

I'd be very surprised if the MacAskill family decided to sell SmugMug any time soon. It's a profitable, fast-growing family-run business that's as much a lifestyle as a business. Chris MacAskill made a lot of money selling FatBrain to Barnes & Noble so it's not like he needs to sell SmugMug to hit the jackpot.

If I were to guess, Digg would be a more likely candidate.

Robert,

You've turned into the Dr. Doom. Not to suggest you're off the mark in pointing out the new economic landscape but how about using offering some constructive things companies can do to ride out the storm. You've had enough experience and talked to enough people to offer solid perspective on how smart companies operate in tough times.

Louis,

Like you, there are a core number of social media tool that I used on regular basis. And then there are the dozens of services that I've used once, use once in a while or registered to use but never go around to actually trying. That's the beauty of the Web 2.0; the menu of interesting thing is never-ending, and there's always the chance you'll find something that rocks your world.

Blog search has been broken/ineffective for far too long. Even Google hasn't done it well yet. It's been interesting to see so many new players (e.g. SearchMe, PowerSet, Cuil) go after the mainstream search market at a time when a cool, hot blog search player would rock.

I had tongue-in-cheek when suggesting that Steve Jobs doesn't like Canada. I do agree that Rogers may be an impediment as well given how much it worships ARPU these days.

All Twitter needs to do now is buy Twellow.com, and all will be good.

I agree that this is a feature Twitter should have implemented to make the service more useful. Maybe Twitter should use some of its $15-million in new cash to buy it along with Summize.

I like how you climbed on the Apple bandwagon by trying to stay off the bandwagon. Sort of like writing a post about the demise of comments in which you hope that people will leave comments. :)

Please,
I can't argue with your premise nor your contention that Mike Z. will ever grant me an interview, although as Stephen Leacock once said: "It may be those who do most, dream most", and I do dream about getting an interview..or something like that.

As for what AAN's role, it is what it is - poking, prodding, questioning, highlighting. Given the subject matter, it's how I make it interesting - or, I hope, it's interesting.

Thanks for reading!

Apple Mark, I see you are between a rock and a hard place.
I accuse you of avoiding very important topics like BSNL deals and mishaps, betting on PBT which is basically dead /telcos and vendors are pulling out, BT, VZ, ERICs/
Let me hint you about BSNL
I posted that link here and I hope you know the story
May 31 2008
Basic electronic equipment is being replaced in all the 101 BSNL towers set up across Jamshedpur. According to a highly placed source in BSNL’s Jamshedpur secondary switching area, BSNL was earlier using Nortel equipment, but now the department is using Ericsson equipment.
==============
in my opinion these are the towers just installed by Nortel in that 2004 $500 mill deal.
1 Why Nortel did not fix the problems?
2 How much it will cost and who will pay for that?
3. Will Nortel be permitted to bid for Next BSNL extension or 93 mill new lines?
I don't think so!
Why BSNL would risk business with Nortel yet again?
Customers are watching Nortel. Maybe I am one of them....who knows?
It's a pitty that Nortel takes $40 a line contracts when ERICs gets $100 a line.
Nortel proves the old saying... You get what you paid for....Jamshedpur.is a sad example of that!

in U2’s McGuinness: Still a moron on Mathew's comments
But he's right, it is all the ISPs' fault. I mean, if they wouldn't provide people with a high-speed connection, people wouldn't be able to download music. Maybe the way to save the music industry is force everyone back to dial-up..or something like that. :)

in Taking a Breather From Social Media? Maybe We’re Doing It Wrong on sarahintampa
Sarah,

This is a post that exactly mirrors what I've been thinking about recently. There are only so many hours in the day so you need to prioritize your needs/interests AND ensure you have a healthy balance between digital and non-digital worlds.

I've started, for example, to keep Twitter off until noon to give myself time to focus better on other things. I've also decided Friendfeed can't be part of my social media portfolio because I'm already stretched too thin, and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. Maybe you and I are exceptions to the rule but do not be surprised if digital fatigue becomes more obvious among the digitrati.

sarahintampa I've been paring down my Twitter and FriendFeed usage lately and what I've found is that I can hop into either of them whenever I feel like it and still get involved in conversations. The key was breaking the addictive habit of having to watch them both all the time. I still think Twitter is a bit more useful than FriendFeed, though.

It's somewhat ironic that this post about comments has generated 78 comments (including mine) on this blog. I would love the idea of a comment aggregation service/widget to reassemble all the comments now being strewn about the Web. Looks like either another feature from Disqus or an opportunity for Fred to fund another comment start-up.

Tamar,

If you're going to include Web 2.0 conferences north of the border, please add mesh (meshconference.com) to your list. (I'm one of the co-organizers.)

Here's our promo paragraph:

Canada's premier Web conference, being held in Toronto on May 21/22 is a chance to connect with people who are as excited about the potential of the Web as you are — people who want to know more about how it is changing the way we live, work and interact with the world. And you won't just connect with them in the hallways — at mesh, every panel and workshop is interactive.

Tamar Weinberg Mark, please see the first sentence in this post about how to get featured in this column. These are all conferences where we have firm media sponsorships. If you contact us with the details, we'll feature your event, but we do have to work out logistics first. Thanks.

in Where’s My Toluu Enthusiasm? on SheGeeks
Cableston,

Now you're part of the conversation, I would suggest you try to focus on making Toluu more intuitive. Right now, it requires an investment (time) to get value from it. It needs to be easier to use. A robust FAQ would be a step in the right direction.

calebelston's picture
calebelston Mike, you are absolutely right. One of the things we will do before launching publicly is expanding the FAQ as well as some sort of tour that explains what Toluu does and why it is useful.

Is there a particular part of the app that took a lot of time to grok?

in Twitter Spam Spirals Out of Control on Mashable - The Social Media Guide
You know that you've really made it when the spammers start paying attention. :) This looks like an opportunity for an enterprising entrepreneur, although the Web being what it is, few people would actually want to pay for an anti-spam tool.
