That's basically what I was talking about. Where windows has a sequence of keystrokes, it seems that most Mac apps have a lot more direct keyboard mapped shortcuts. I guess if you look at it, it's kind of a draw, but all I can say is that when I used my PC, I hardly ever used keyboard shortcuts and now that I'm on the Mac, I find myself looking for them a lot more. In my opinion, Mac's keyboards are utilized by apps a lot more than on Windows based systems. Maybe someone will actually do a study on it or something but until them, my opinion is that OS X is more keyboard friendly.

I think what you are looking for is the "Full Keyboard Access" option in the System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse screen. If you open up your prefs and go to the Keyboard & Mouse Prefs, then click "Keyboard" tab. Than set the full keyboard access to "All Controls" This gives you tab control in dialogs. Hope this is what you were looking for. Here's a screenshot

Yeah, my thoughts as well. How come it only freaks out on text fields? Then again... That's why I'm not a programmer, that kind of stuff would drive me insane! I feel for the crew over at Mozilla. Keep up the good work guys, it's a minor inconvenience. At least there's a semi-easy fix.

I did not... I am a designer and I do work on quite a few websites, but this one I had a friend, Derek Punsalan (an extremely talented designer, I might add) design for me. I think he did a great job. I really like the minimalistic approach and the calm, cool colors. The cloud-like shapes in the headers are a kind of look "out through the windows" environment. A nifty little subtle play on graphics, if you ask me. Thanks Derek!

Yeah, I knew about Fetch when I got the MacBook, so I downloaded that. I didn't like it at all. A friend recommended Transmit and I never went back. Although I have to admit Jon's Connect to Server technique sure comes in handy a lot.

You have to delete them from the library to actually delete them from you hard drive. The logic behind it is the same as in iTunes. If you have a playlist (album) with a song (photo) in it and delete it from the playlist, the chance is that you might want to add it to another playlist at some point. That's why deleting from a playlist or album does just that, only delete from the album or playlist. Your library repository is where the actual files reside, so if you delete from there, they will end up in the trash. Think of your album pictures and playlist songs as shortcuts, that helps me remember. By the way, you are not the only one who finds it a little odd. If you think about it though, it does make sense, you just have to get used to it.

Okay, I think I like the photo idea. Maybe a iBAM photo advert contest? We can base the winner off number of comments to flickr by a certain date. That way everyone who participates gets some publicity from the thing.

I agree mostly... I think that for the average consumer Mac user that wants a place to store family photos, documents and so on, a .Mac account is perfect. I think of it like Apple's answer to AOL. For the power user or one that deals in large files (photographers, designers, etc.), it's just not a viable solution at all. It just really depends on your usage requirements and what you will be needing from your Mac.

I shutter to say because everyone will say "Why were you surprised?" iBAM started at Media Temple on the grid server back in December and that didn't work so I moved it to GoDaddy (where it sits now) as I had an open account on my list. I agree on that point. When I first got my Mac, I just guessed that those things were set "the way I was used to" but soon discovered it to be another way. I'm glad though that I found the setup finally and configured things to my liking. A little bit of a hassle, but a small price to pay for all the other great things, in my opinion.

I wouldn't consider myself a casual computer user at all. I am on a computer almost all day. I am VERY savvy when it comes to the workings of windows (3.1 all the way up to XP Server). I have used windows in just about every capacity and decided that for my line of work and accomplishing what I want to accomplish, a Mac would be the best step to move me in the right direction. I know you're not picking on me at all, but I do want to qualify my purchase. I have always understood programming from a basic designer's point of view as I have been doing it since I was in High School, but I have learned that I prefer to steer clear from large scale coding tasks as well as delve deep into the world of development. My preference is design and production and having the Mac hasn't further enabled me to do what I love as much as it has made it easier to do and faster to get to a finished product. There are some things that are just too much work on a PC when compared to the tools on a Mac (specifically in what I do). I am not a PC basher and don't want to be considered a defector. I have 2 PC's in my house and 7 in the office, but for my purposes, the decision I made was a well thought out and calculated one.

Now that I have switched, I have dug deeper into CSS & PHP world. I don't really know why, but it has been an interesting journey and quite fun. I hope that explains my purchase and that you understand that I believe to have a fairly good grasp on the "competition". I don't make purchases of this magnitude lightly. As "spur of the moment" as the writeup may sound, it was fairly calculated.

I do appreciate your comment though because I agree with you on your main point. Don't make rash purchases without proper research and investigation into as many options as you have time to explore. Thank you for your comment, I hope you return to add your insight again.

That was what I was thinking it could do, but that brings up a good point. It doesn't actually run iTunes, does it? So without running iTunes, it has to have a "host" powering it. Thus the external HD could be connected to the base station, but the library from the streaming computer would need to be moved to the HD as well. I'm guessing it always has to have a host computer to authenticate media ownership through (running iTunes). So add in the requirement of a host computer in the mix. Hmmmm... Still not convinced it's a good addition to the media center. A mini looks like it would be less expensive for sure and you would have it all in one package, wouldn't you? Keep us posted. It's nice to have a live tester here.

I'm not a battery expert, but I think it isn't so much the memory issue any more with lithium batteries, but it's just a good idea to "work them out" a bit so they last longer (lifetime wise).

Point taken and definitely understandable. Honestly, it was just yet another tip that you *could* do to protect your data. I really do not recommend to most that taking your HD out on a regular basis is a good idea, but, it would do the trick, wouldn't it? However impractical it might be, it's gets the job done. I guess if you were REALLY concerned about the data in your MacBook, the better solution would be to just spot weld it to your body and take it with you everywhere you go or plainly just leave it at home. I have to agree though, it is a tad bit extreme but it is an option.

All I can say is I agree wholeheartedly with the article's message that some logo contests have the potential to be exploitive and damaging to the design community. As much as it sounds as if that is what I am doing here, I assure you it is not. This is nothing more than a friendly competition by your choice. I am a brand designer myself and I do place a high value on my work, but I design because I love to, not just because I am paid to. I look at it more like a person who plays a sport professionally (or anything for that matter). They will most likely play that sport with friends for no pay just because they like to play. I look at this contest in the same way. iBAM contains in it's community a collection of creative individuals like myself that love what they do. Here is a focused opportunity to showcase that talent and as an added bonus have a chance to win a fairly substantial prize. I am more than capable of designing my own logo, but that is against the point. This is a community site focused on Mac owners. I want the community to have part as well as say in what happens within these virtual walls. Additionally, we run this site out of our own pocket here as a passion of our own. We are not a huge corporation looking for free work. I do, however, understand the premise of the article, but it was not my intention at all to "pimp" out the design community in any way. We're here to have fun, if you're not going to have fun designing the logo, don't do it, simple as that!

I do want to applaud you for taking your stand and that's why I published your comment. I do agree with the article and in the situations it was referring to, I stand with you. I do believe this is a different situation, whether you agree with me or not. Possibly you would have gone about this contest differently, but I want to assure you, there is in no way an exploitation or selfish motivation in this contest, however faint the appearance of one may seem. I can't be any more honest than what I have posted in the rules and in this comment. I truly believe this is a different situation than the examples put forth in the article and I will stand my ground here. This is a community building exercise with no desire for my own personal gain. And that is that!

Please don't get me wrong, I am not attacking you as I do understand you are only trying to show another point of view and that is what makes this form of communication so great. Thank you for your post and I do hope that mine has explained my intentions behind all of this in response. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your voice, I do hope to hear from you again soon.

If you click the trash can, it will bring up a window of all the files in there (as long as you haven't clicked "Empty Trash"). Your file should be safe in there. Just move it back out.

Sure... Not sure how much of a help I will be, but here's what I did (honestly, it took 2 weeks to figure this out so I'll leave out all the troubleshooting steps). If this doesn't work, feel free to comment and I'll do what I can to help.

Reinstalled Flash player (latest version)
be sure to "allow" access to your camera
Right-click on the popup movie and select "Settings"
Click the little camera tab (4th one over I think)
Choose "USB Video Class Video"
Click close

If you don't see your mug in the window then, it could be one of a million other things. Hope that helps... Let me know

Good point! yeah, come to think of it, I don't use F9 either. Actually, I use another one of Shaun's tricks for ExposÃ©. I have it mapped to the upper right corner of my screen (located in "System Prefs / Dashboard & ExposÃ©") ... so when I shoot my mouse to that corner, I get ExposÃ© without needing a keystroke at all. Then the Tab trick really does come in handy. All in all, both have really proven very useful.

Honestly, I don't find them expensive at all and the service on my (dv) account has been nothing short of stellar. Just for some reason, the right set of circumstances aligned for Justine and the switch was extra cumbersome. It seems that most of the DNS issues have been ironed out now (I hope), so we can all put this crazy experience behind us and move on. I am still a HUGE (mt) fan and don't intend on ever leaving them. Honestly, the shenanigans were just too crazy to not blog about.

Update: I received an email this morning from Alex Capehart saying:

"It tears me up to see a customer frustrated enough to put bullet holes in our logo."

Which, in turn, makes me feel bad. I didn't want to come across as an (mt) hater. So... touchÃ© Alex. The bullet holes might have been a bit over the top, I'll give you that. Sorry Everyone...

Update: We just got off the phone with Alex and all is well in the world. Who knows? Maybe all of this will result in some interface upgrades in the (dv) account center. Whatever happens, we're happy and feeling amazingly taken care of by the team @ (mt) despite the hiccups in the account center or the tech support department this week. That said, I think I at least owe it to them to "patch up" the header image a bit to reflect the outcome of our conversation. But just in case you didn't see the original one, you can see it here.

I haven't had a lot of luck with GD, their support really has hacked me off many times in the past. I do have a couple small sites with them, but mostly, I just use them for purchasing domain names and host elsewhere. (mt) support really is stellar, this is the only time it has wavered and it wasn't that much of a waver at all. I mean, it's not like they were impossible to get a hold of (i.e. DataCities) or put an idiot on the phone with me (GoDaddy) who didn't even know how DNS worked. The circumstances were just crazy and they have done everything (and more) in their power to make the situation better. I gotta hand it to 'em, they really put their back into this issue and made a loyal fan out of me, for sure. What a day this has been!

The IP issue for TBS is just because Justine hasn't had a chance to set wordpress back to tbs.com so that's not a (mt) issue. As far as your speed of WP on (gs), it should run fast as any other over there. We're both with (dv) servers because the (gs) is a whole different beast. I switched from (gs) myself because I had a lot of issues with it, but that was when they were first getting it up and running. It's really solid now so I'm not sure what your issue might be. Have you tried a fresh install of WP? It also might be a good idea to ask a tech over there if there's something special they recommend for running WP on (gs).

I don't see why they wouldn't either. It does make perfect sense for sure. The express does have it's handy uses though, like having the Extreme in a completely different location than your home stereo system and the travel perks (wireless in a hotel). But I do agree, having AirTunes in the Extreme router would make a lot of sense.

I think it's a matter of preference really. Live bookmarks are just as useful as a reader. I, personally, like to see more than the title sometimes and appreciate the "starring" option in Google Reader (GR) or the "flagging" option in NNW so if it's something I want to read later, I can do so when I get the time. Haven't used FF Live Bookmarks that much, can you do that in there?

FYI: I just switched back to GR last night... I just can't make up my mind

Personally... I use both iChat & Adium (and Skype) because Adium keeps all my accounts in one place and easy (that's what it's for) but it does not support video or voice, so I have iChat (and Skype) for that. One day maybe, there will be one (ring) to rule them all. I hope anyway.

Thank you! I am always semi-nervous about posting about design as it seems there's always someone that will disagree with you about something or another. Thanks! Actually yes, I have been very successful in the past. So much so, I completely prefer this method over anything else. It seems that people are more likely to give and give more when it's this easy for them. Now, granted, my wife does have a lot of close friends and family, but the first time I did it, I was completely blown away by the response.

There are some that prefer to go the "old fashioned" route and get a gift. I don't discourage it at all, that's why I have the listed items at the bottom.

Well, I figured out the DB errors, but the images are not coming back. I have successfully killed them all. Moving on now, I guess. There's nothing else I can do.

I was able to pull everything from the last 2 weeks or so out of my trash on my laptop (which wasn't much at all) but everything I have uploaded to iBAM from before that is completely gone. Sorry guys...

Also, for some reason when I upgraded the DB, the 'wp_cats' and 'wp_post2cat' tables got wiped out completely. Luckily, I did have the backup of the old DB so restoring them was pretty easy once I figured out what was actually missing.

Everything else seems to be working as far as I can see. Looking back, I sure wish I would have been more careful in backing up. I am kicking myself for missing the uploads folder. A total noob mistake by a non-noob! I totally knew better but in the rush to get iBAM back up, I killed that folder twice never to be seen again.

I had to re-import just the sections that were missing through the sql command line interface. I looked in the sql export file I made before the upgrade and found the section I needed. (there's one that makes the table and one that defines the data in it right below the creation script). Copied the 2 sections and pasted them into the command line box in phpmyadmin. Executed the script and it did it. I had to do it for each table that wasn't in there.

I don't know if it's that organized, but the nature of technology (in my opinion) is to always innovate so with all that innovation it creates a "gotta have the latest" kind of scenario. I would hate to be a software/hardware company that had to try to figure out how to roll out new innovations and keep them compatibale with past technology. They can have that!

Yeah... sorry everyone! PodCamp has totally taken over my life for about the last month or so and I was feeling really bad about neglecting iBAM. I never thought it would be this much of a time-soaker. It has been lots of fun, but man, I'm gonna need a lot more help next year if I'm to do this again. Help like this is TRULY appreciated. iBAM is something I truly love to work on but duty has pushed pleasure right out the door once again. My only hope is the PodCamp AZ is a complete blast and it will make this all seem worthwhile. Here's to hoping!

I seriously did pull her name! You gotta believe me!

Here's what I did:

I left my iPhone on all day and tracked "iboughtamac" so I got everyone's tweets. Then this morning I flicked at the list for about 5 minutes (up and down the entire length) then I gave it one final flick and stopped it with a poke. Dead center of my screen and under my finger was Justine's tweet.

Immediately I thought to myself... "Man, everyone's gonna think I rigged this" But then I thought: "Justine should be able to win stuff just like any of us." So I let it stand just as it happened. I know it's not a big deal, I just don't want people thinking I play favorites. It honestly came up just as I described.

I had a lot of fun meeting people yesterday so take that and add in the (unnecessary) guilt I feel for people thinking I rigged the contest and you have my reasons for doing it again today. It's all in good fun, but I do want you guys to feel that I have been fair.

So there... that's my take.

Totally! it's kinda like my beef with (standard) schooling. You cram a bunch of students of the same age but different learning levels in a classroom and expect them all to learn everything at the same rate. It's just not working...

Well... I might be countin' my chickens before they're hatched but Craig might have hit the nail right on the head. At first attempt, it seems that this issue I'm having might be related to my running installation of Sticky Windows. I love this app too but if it comes down to one or the other, Twitterrific is the easy winner. Sorry Sticky, until you two play nice, I'm gonna leave you off. I promise to check back after every update.

I sure hope this was the fix, I'm really excited to be using Twitterrific again.

Anyone else out there using both these apps?

You know, I'm not sure really as I haven't used the Textmate Blogging bundle much. I think it's in a lot of ways the same, but I do like the fact that it pulls latest posts into a list for editing as well as the nifty live preview window. I have customized mine to look exactly like an iBAM post so I know what it will look like before I post. Saves me from the "Post/View/Oops/Edit/Save/Repeat" process I do VERY OFTEN when I'm posting. I think it's a little more window driven than TextMate's process.

I gotta be honest. I'm not a fan of 1&1 at all! Admittedly, I do not have extensive experience with them so I don't want to bash, but the experience I had with them on behalf of a client was not pretty. This is mostly due to the fact that I found their email and hosting backend so non-conformative to what would IMHO logically be what a backend would want to be like. I'm not "Captain UI" but it was so vastly different from what other hosts are doing and the crazy application settings I had to do to make my client's software communicate with their servers was out of control.

Now their hosting environment and pricing seem to be great and all that, but I just don't want so many steps every time I set up a site. But that's just me.

I believe 'join' will just make it a access point. I used mine in this mode for my XBOX 360 to connect to my network as well as playing stuff through my stereo. Extend does just that. Takes your WiFi signal and extends it further. For those with large areas to cover with a WiFi signal.

I think that's it... anyone want to correct me if I'm wrong?
