You have had the shirt since college. You are now 40. Hence, it wore out. You are very lucky your mom doesn't check this blog.

in Update from Ash-Lee on Barnes & Noble on Hungry Blues
If the store has a bay devoted to erotica, why can't the "urban fiction" erotica go there? Cover art aside, if I wrote and published a book of erotica (one that did or did not exploit stereotypes) it wouldn't go with "Jewish fiction"--it would go with erotica. It seems like a much less offensive way of dealing with this material, and would free up the endcaps for displays of the stuff readers go to the African American fiction section to find.

in After 42 Years, an Indictment for Jimmie Lee Jackson on Hungry Blues
It's unfortunate that even though there is an indictment today, the New York Times feels constrained to call this "an obscure killing" instead of "an unprosecuted murder." That probably went through their legal department, what do you think?

Good modeling, Harvard Law students! I'm proud that there is someone out there who uses their privilege to speak truth to power.

in What Liberals Don’t Get About Supreme Court Nominees on Hungry Blues
What I find bizarre about this comment: do you think we were asleep for the entirety of the Clinton presidency, and didn't somehow notice that the Republicans created a backlog of nominees to the federal bench? Consistency and integrity, indeed! Senate conservatives are consistent about pursuing the interests of their own demographically small constituency, and are utterly faithful to the principle of serving their own narrow interests.

in FBI Document Labels Michigan Affirmative Action and Peace Groups as Terrorists on Hungry Blues
I notice that the FBI uses passive voice when they describe those under surveillance as "various groups and individuals within the state of Michigan who are thought to be involved in terrorist activities." They don't say who thinks these folks are involved in terror. It justifies inappropriate surveillance and harassment to not specify an agent in this way.

Among other things, these emails show that one must be careful about .sig files, otherwise vitriolic emails to fonts of misinformation will all be signed "thanks, Barb."

in Edgar Ray Killen Presided Over The Funerals Of Judge Marcus Gordon’s Parents on Hungry Blues
Isn't this a crazy kind of conflict of interest? Even if the judge couldn't have known about Killen's racism--and that seems quite unlikely!-is it normal to have a judge preside over the trial of someone who was his religious officiant at a major life event? I wonder if Killen also did the judge's wedding. One has to ask!

in Hey! My Blog Was Mentioned On ABC Local News In Mississippi on Hungry Blues
Mazel tov! Wow, so you are the left's equivalent of the white supremacist fringe? That's pretty repulsive. It's also pretty funny to be included on the evening news as a screen shot. Couldn't they have called to ask for further comment? Though I suppose that if they think you are the left-wing version of some skinhead crazies, they might not want to do that.

in St. Petersburg Police Bind Hands And Feet Of 5-Year-Old African-American Girl on Hungry Blues
I was part of an online discussion of this case that emerged before the video was made public. There were many parents who asserted what Amie did, that the problem in this case was the parent who was not teaching her child good behavior. No one who took that position had the imagination to think of how terrifying it would be to be a five year old child (and to her mother!) to be taken away from school in handcuffs by police. (Of course they didn't use handcuffs, but only because her hands were too small.) They were all thinking about how it would affect the other children in the classroom. Others in the discussion imagined the pain of the child and of the mother, but we also took for granted that the child was having a pathological tantrum. We deplored the lack of skill and the punitive discipline we imagined the school officials to have exercised, based on the initial reports.

That was before any racial bias could enter into the audience's mind, as the original reporting on this appalling case didn't mention race. Now the school releases the child's name and video as if to say, "But don't you understand, she's a very SCARY kindergartener, she's black don't you know." They even released her name! She's a minor child! She's five years old! I hope some organization will step forward to assist the mother in suing the school system for damages.
