in Tuesday Open Thread: Hi Everybody on Jack and Jill Politics
One more thing...

Back in 2000 when Christian conservatives decided that Bush was their guy..they fell back and threw their full support behind him. You hardly heard a peep about abortion and social issues--Bush was the "compassionate conservative" remember?

Unfortunately, I have yet to see this from the Dem side. Again Obama will need to move towards the center for fear that he will be labeled a crazy leftist radical-

-In essence, he needs a defining Sista Souljah moment. We can either allow him one or demand he stand on a principled soapbox and lose with honor.

in Tuesday Open Thread: Hi Everybody on Jack and Jill Politics
I don't begrudge folk for being emotional about a candidate. Barack has attracted millions of new voters and most of them are political novices. However, I do have a problem with seasoned politicos (CBC and HRC) who see fit to exploit this situation for their own benefit and personal gain. They should know better.

In order to win, he will need to move towards the center and plant a NO Parking sign for the Straight talk Express...or the Gaffe Zig zag express. We all need to look at the larger picture here. Yes, his candidacy is historic, but there are substantive issues at stake. War with Iran? a sagging economy, SCOTUS appointments, Energy policy--I can go on, but u get the picture. McCain is at the opposite end of the ideologically spectrum on all of these issues. McCain 2000 is no McCain 2008. He’s been hijacked by the ultra right wingnuts of the GOP and that should be a cause for worry to every progressive and moderate right or left of center.

As Obama moves towards a centrist platform-he will no doubt anger (FISA Bill)some and you will have every right to exercise your First Amendment right to express your displeasure. This is actually a good thing but before you go off and vote for someone else due some perceived egregious error committed by Senator Obama:

Ask yourselves—Will McCain solve the issues I care most about?

Is he closely aligned to my views or the ultra right wing of the GOP?

The choice, after the anger has subsided will be clear. It does not mean you give Obama a pass, simply that you are an informed voter who realizes what is at stake in this election.

in How Obama Won: The Past Helps The Present on Jack and Jill Politics
Rikyrah-

That proportional system was negotiated by Jesse himself:

Superdelegates Should Not Decide the Nominee

In 1988, Dukkakis led in pledged delegates and Rev. Jesse Jackson had accumulated roughly one thousand delegates from the primaries. Prior to ceding the nomination, he brokered a deal called Rule 13B that allowed delegates to be proportionately awarded whenever a candidate obtained at least 15% of the vote, going forward.

Without rule 13B, Hillary wins.

B-serious,

Agreed. He needs to choose a VP right away to steer clear of all the HRC camp mess. There were some rumblings that he could choose Sebelius or McCaskill, but I think one of the VA triumvirate (Webb, Kaine, Warner) could balance the ticket much better while securing a swing state.

Hagel--is looking more like a cabinet post than A Veep choice especially if HRC is still hanging around..much easier to challenge a Repub than a fellow Dem.

McCain, I think is waiting for Obama to choose so he can make a counter appointment. He has been looking a Jindal, the newly minted 36 year GOV of LA..lol..

She is trying to bully her way on the ticket, that is her price. She tried it in secret talks, now she is making it public.

I was watching David Gergen on CNN last night--he said he had a "change of heart on the dream ticket" Gergen as some of u know used to be a Clinton advisor.

Here is the play for HRC-and her challenge to Obama--appoint me or risk alienating my base!!

Obama on the other hand--should he pick her--gets her baggage and looks EXTREMELY WEAK, caving in and providing GOP fodder for the GEN.

What if he says FU and chooses another VP? Yes, her supporters can nominate her from the convention floor--but I dont think she will get the votes.

Yep---after the GOP loses this election, there will be an internal struggle for power b/t the social and fiscal conservatives. The fiscal crew is all about money-and looks the other way while social conservatives whip the base into a frenzy with issues like gay marriage and abortion.

I was of the opinion that they needed to lose two Gen elections, but a 20-30 seat loss in the house, a 6-8 seat loss in the senate coupled with an Obama presidency should do it.

Then its on!!...social conservatives will be told to STFU so they can push more moderates they deem more electable.

Crist fits that mold and other consevatives will try to present themselves as moderates to get elected

in Hillary, The Susan B. Anthony, John Brown And Fannie Lou Hamer Of The Florida Primary? on Jack and Jill Politics
Only the superdelegates can put a stop to this madness, but they are unwilling to step in and provide Mrs. Clinton the ammunition she needs to fuel the speculation that the primaries were shut down by the “good ole boys network”. The DNC is being held hostage for the next two weeks and Clinton is free to do her dirty work. The Rules and Bylaws Committee meets on May 31st and the MI and FLA delegates will be seated. What happens between now and May 31st is anyone's guest but she will continue to make the case to fully seat Michigan and Florida to create the sense that the nomination was not lost but stolen by Obama and the superdelegates.

Shortly after June 3rd she will concede and make a perfunctory attempt at party unity by throwing her arms around Obama while secretly hoping for disaster allowing her triumphant return in 2012. The key is wishing for an implosion at the convention or a mass desertion by her supporters in November without appearing to be culprit of this sinister plan

Ms Martin, I like McCaskill as well but I think Hagel (yes he is a Repub) would be revolutionary and could strike well with Indies. As for the polls, I saw something similar on TPM or Kos but it only referred to PA...not the entire country. That same poll showed Edwards doing well in PA with Obama, forgive me- I do like Edwards but I think he is a weak VP candidate, dude could not even bring in NC last time.

Other VP choices

Sam Nunn of GA--will turn GA blue and respected national sec expert

Then there is Rendell, Clinton man being shopped--yes he would bring in PA but the GOP would use that vid of him praising Farakhan

Anon 1.25 brushing you shoulders off tell ladies to do it as weill but had he used another song like 99 problem

in McCain Misrepresents Obama AGAIN on Iran on Jack and Jill Politics
Here is James Baker on the subject:

But now Baker's October 6, 2006, interview on Fox News' Hannity and Colmes has emerged. In the interview, he emphatically dismisses the notion advanced by his Republican brethren that talking with enemies -- even state sponsors of terrorism -- is any sort of appeasement.

"You don't just talk to your friends, you talk to your enemies as well," an animated Baker said. "Diplomacy involves talking to your enemies. You don't reward your enemies necessarily by talking to them if you are tough and you know what you are doing. You don't appease them. Talking to an enemy is not in my view appeasement."

Baker noted that when he was Secretary of State for President Bush's father, he made 15 trips to Syria in 1990 and 1991, "at the time when Syria was on the list of countries who were state sponsors of terrorism. On the 16th trip, guess what, lo and behold, Syria changed 25 years of policy and agreed for the first time in the history to sit at the table with Israel, which is what Israel wanted at the time."

Rikyrah-

I doubt we will see her on the ticket and you linked an article from the field here not too long ago that made a compelling argument against the Dream ticket.

Obama needs to use his surrogates to play up the fact that he would look weak and use her arrogance and sense of entitlement against her.

I am rooting for Obama-Hagel ticket.

They point is to galvanize the Christian loonies and scare Jewish voters. With the economy in the tank, the GOP desperately needs to change the subject matter, sort of the swiftboat commencement and testing the waters against Obama.

Did it work?-I think it backfired and Bush and his cohorts were taken by surprise at the veracity of the Dems' response and especially Obama's counterpunch.

Since then, several videos showing McCain and James Baker acknowledging that we need to engage our enemies. This would not have happened 4 years ago and the reason why I call this electoral cycle, the YouTube election.

Lastly, can Barack throw a punch, YES HE CAN...LOL!!!

Jack "Baratunde" I hope u get some rest and change your mind.

Let’s put this "win" into proper perspective. She simply held serve last night.

Obama is running vs. Bill, Hillary, McCain, the Republican machine, and the MSM!

He was 20+ points down in PA, yet he was able to narrow the gap to under ten pts.

Yes he is getting roughed up but he needs it--better he learns now then in November. He basically waltzed in the Senate unopposed (Alan keys?)

IND and NC will be a different story.

Today McCain asked the NC GOP to stop running an attack ad featuring Rev. Wright--Why? It would open him up for John Hagee and Rod Parsley questions-

Lastly did u think this would be easy?

in Hillary On Working Class Whites In 1995: "Screw ‘Em" on Jack and Jill Politics
It’s been well documented that the Clintons have made some disparaging remarks regarding the working class but it CAME from the CLINTONS. Barack's crime is that he is a black man is saying this.

The Clintons have shown that they only care about themselves and --screw everyone else whether it’s the DNC, Black and even former

prez candidates.

The only thing that prevents HRC from taking this fight to the DNC convention other than the superdels, is the fear that the Clinton brand will suffer and her political future is at stake.
