It's true that amortizing development costs is a huge problem for GA products, but it's also true that that had little to do with Porsche's failure.

There have been very few successful automotive to aircraft engine conversions, partly because the engineering requirements are so different. Airplane engines need to produce near-full power for hours on end, while auto engines only need to do so for a few seconds before producing a small fraction of rated power for long periods. Auto engines are just designed to do something different from airplane engines. Going the other way would probably be just as disastrous, but nobody tries to do it because the economic incentives aren't there. The successful conversions have mostly been small engines that were designed to run at rated power most of the time (because that was the only way they could propel the vehicle at highway speeds).

None of this is to say that auto engine technologies (especially ignition, induction, management, and fuel delivery) couldn't be successfully employed in an airplane engine (as the article aptly demonstrates).

Actually, if you look at the fixed->retractable conversions that virtually every manufacturer performed in the 60's and 70's, retractable gear starts to be a lot less attractive. Typically, there was less than a 10 knot increase in cruise speed (for planes cruising in the mid-100's) once you increased the gross takeoff weight to compensate for all the extra hardware, and compared the retract version to a fixed gear version with good wheel fairings. Remember, weight=slow in an airplane.

Using two in-production aircraft as another point of comparison: Look at the published cruise speed of the Columbia cum Cessna 400 vs. that of the Mooney Acclaim. To within the airframe-to-airframe variation in cruise speed, these two airplanes fly just as fast, using the same TSIO-550 engine, but the Cessna has fixed gear.

1. No one in Silicon Valley understands why Kiosks work. Here's why: most online streaming services go to your PC/Mac, not to your TV. The set-top boxes are a pain in the ass to set up and still have lots of issues.

2. There is already a precedent for a self-destructing DVD rental (no return) as the exposure to oxygen ruins the DVD. These rentals usually cost more than the typical Redbox ($1 per night) or DVDNow/The Latest Attraction ($1.50 per night) at $4.99 one-time for up to 48 hours of viewing.

3. Kiosks make sense in major metro areas where you have lots of young people (especially those who rent) because most of these people have a busy life (work and social) and don't plan out what movies they want to watch: hence Netflix not being an attractive option

The unexpected development may be that mobile becomes the CORE platform for some applications e.g. music, email and starts to extend from there onto the online world. In South Africa a mobile-focused IM client (Mixit) is apparently more popular than online equivalents.

NPR has low diversity among their reporters! Their Hispanic, African-American, make up does not even come close to to reflect the populations diversity. There is reports of nepotism in hiring from people who applied for local jobs. Both in hiring process and exposing and soliciting available positions. This problem became worst during the Bush years when they put a super right-wing women on the helm. Please report on that stat as well.

Bicycles are a vehicle that need roads. Nothing can change this fact. Bicycles were using these roads before the car and dare I say it will be using them after cars disappear.

Yes its dangerous to ride a bicycle on a busy road but that is the sort of thing people do when they believe passionately in something.

In Sydney (Australia) there is a lot of aggression on the roads between drivers which is avoided by riding because there is a small amount of respect riders are given that makes it a little bit easier.
