in Why Bing is a stupid ass name for a search engine on The Inquisitr
Doesn't really have to do much with microsoft being a 'decent' company. People alreaddy are following them and have been forever as far as desktop software goes. They just suck at making a good search engine, and haven't found any other way to compete with google for advertising dollars- so you constantly see these pathetic attempts to compete by throwing money at the problem and coming up with stupid buzzwords for the same old thing like "decision engine".

in Why Bing is a stupid ass name for a search engine on The Inquisitr
What a dumb article, haha. As everyone else has said, google and other companies with seemingly ridiculous names didn't fail based on having dumb names, nor thrive based on their name. For one thing, no Microsoft CAN'T develop a search engine that leaves google in the dust, but if they magically found a way, it wouldn't fail based on being called Bing...

This idea that they are trying to pump that it's a decision engine cracks me up though... they really are getting desperate here. That commercial about 'search overload' is particularly funny, since it was always THEIR search tools that produced terrible irrelevant results, while google is almost always on the money within the first 3 results.

in A CEO Who Shares the Pain on All About Nortel
Not to sound like another one of the disgruntled ex-employees (Many of them) but I for some reason am still sticking it out inside Nortel. Not because I think the company will be around in a few years but just cause I like what I do.

However, one thing that P#&$&#ES me off is the executives. They say they LISTEN to customers, THEY DON"T!. They say they listen to employees, THEY DON"T. They say they listen to the way the market is moving, THEY DON"T.

Not to go into specifics but it just shocks me how greedy these guys are. They make really stupid decisions, then they think they should be rewarded for it.

If it was up to me, everyone at a executive level should be paid 75% stock and 25% salary. If they F*#*DK up, then they lose money. Simple math..... The guys in the treaches listening to the customer complain about product quality and support can't do anything about it but complain, complain, but noone listens.

Anyhow, I'm done with my two cents :)

Desk Jockey I agree wholeheartedly with you. It is astounding the level of incompetence we are witnessing this very moment. The executives and GEniuses like to talk fancy and in big terms, but when it comes to down to actual deliverables, they unfortunately fail miserably. They walk about wanting to "incubate" innovation but all they've done is to destroy it.

As for their pay levels... there's not really a great solution. If they were paid 75% stock and 25% cash, there would be a great incentive for them to cook the books again, ala the criminal Frank Dunn and then Nortel would be in even worse shape, perhaps already defunct. However I agree that their continued astronomical salaries in contrast to the sacrifices other employees must make is a travesty.
broadbandbill Actually, that was more like two dollars, Candadian of course :)...--bb

in Blog Post: Briefcase Coming Monday on Hey Mac Blog
Thom - by your logic, the iPhone shouldn't have a camera, either, because some companies have confidential blueprints or other trade secrets that they don't want employees taking pictures of outside the office. Ditto on the e-mail feature because that can be used to forward work e-mail to nonsecure outside addresses. Oh, and Apple should disable the telephone feature because we don't want employees sharing work secrets on any nonlandline the company can't listen to. And the gps feature lets competitors track the physical movements of anyone with an iphone. And the videogame apps and music and webbrowsing just enable workers to avoid work during work hours, effectively stealing from the company, so there go all entertainment features and apps. iPaperweight, coming soon!

The purpose of my original comment was to suggest (to an app developer) that development of an app or app feature (specifically Drag-Drop) that I think 99.9999 % of iphone users would use regularly.

Even if Sync-ed files (music/video/apps) can't be drag-dropped, surely a developer clever enough to program WIRELESS text/pdf/picture file transfer could program wireFUL transfer.

in Blog Post: Briefcase Coming Monday on Hey Mac Blog
Where's the DRAG-DROP option?

I know you aren't Apple and aren't responsible for their screw-ups, but I was devastated when I discovered that there was no way to move files into an iPhone without going through the idiotic "sync" option of iTunes. Mac guys always hassle B. Gates for antitrust violations, but no other mp3 player in the WORLD (even microsoft brands) lacks the ability to copy files directly, while Apple just wants to chain all its users to its promotional website, even if Sync-ing is slower, more complicated, and more likely to delete all your files by accident. But worst of all, there's no way to sync .pdfs or .txts, images, or any other file that isn't music/video/app.

Why can't we just drag-drop, copy-paste, a feature every other dinky portable mp3 player has naturally? I can see (but not add) my photos pop up as a read-only hard drive when I plug in the iphone, which means Apple is specifically blocking my ability to copy in files through windows' native gui.

I had hoped Briefcase Lite would fill the giant gaping, unnecessary hole in the iphone's features, but guess what, like most iphone users I have a windows pc. You realize that all iphones come with a USB cable, right? So why require everyone to set up an SSH server? I don't even know what SSH is! I've burned through 2 hours so far trying to get one up and running on my machine and it's still not working. And even if it does get working, I would rather just drag-drop than worry about remembering the right text commands to set up a server in a program windows will probably render incompatible in the next update. Please please PLEASE add drag-drop support.

christopher dude, get a life and put your computer angst where it belongs.... which is not here.
Thom Yes, definitely sounds like rant that doesn't belong here, and instead belongs with other companies. However, it is an interesting idea to have drag-n-drop.

With that said, and as much as I love drag-n-drop, I am NOT interested in having this drag-n-drop feature any time soon. Just to put my vote forward. Add it if you like, but I'm liking the idea of using my iPhone to grab things from my computer instead of having to use my computer to go the other way around.

And keeping on topic, the previous blog post fully explains the intent of this app. Briefcase does exactly what it says it will, exactly what the developer says was intended. The drag-n-drop method is completely the other way around to this method, i.e. these methods are backwards of each other, totally opposite intentions. Considering the problems inherent of going from computer to iPhone, and looking at other apps that have attempted it, it seems like software would have to be installed on the computer itself to do it. Not having to install software is much nicer, and I think everyone can agree on that.

I also like the observance of possible security issues, and I respect the decisions made to limit Briefcase for those reasons. I think a couple of the limitations of Zune had to do with security, too, not all, but some. Transferring files always opens up security holes, hence, why companies starting balking when they realized iPods could be used as portable hard drives to steal company info. Disabling such a feature on the iPod and the Zune, and the iPhone, ends up enabling these devices to be kept and used by the employees. They are easy to differentiate from portable hard drives by appearance, so people are allowed to enjoy their devices. It's not a perfect solution, but it helps divert blame from the these devices. That might change as more apps like Briefcase come around, but companies really need to focus on employee loyalty instead of the devices.

Anyways, nice job, very easy to use, and I hope you start getting legitimate complaints that you can actually do something about, but hopefully not rants. :-)

Why does he have to be a Illegal instead of a hard working person who had traveled 8000 miles to work on a visa. I have a guy from El Salvador who worked for me five years so far he has learned full english and pays his own rent, bills, health insurance for him and his wife and son. Unlike a lot of white people who sponge off this great country. He never complains , shows up every day on time He lives in east Boston and works in Beverly. He works so good I got rid of two of my lazy white guys who never made it to work on time (and they live in Beverly) always complained about how bad the job was, took to long of a lunch and done nothing productive after, always needed to be told what to do and then they screwed it up and told me they did not understand what I told them. complained that I would only pay half of there health insurance when I did not have to pay any. And they live in a section 8 rent household so there rent is almost nothing, and there utilities are always being shut off for non-payment. We should take notes from these people not complain about them.

Betsy Ross They are the ones that backed another lying democrat Deval Patrick. Did they get the xtra things that were promised by Deval before he was elected. NO. I bet the flag men won't even have to speak English. So learn your Spanish drivers. I took the MBTA course to work on the tracks and there were landscapers there with there boss who had to have the test translated which means they were most likely given the answers as well seeing how the material wasn't presented in spanish. I back the Police details. They also are an aid in getting unregistered and out of date inspection stickers off the road. They also know the local drivers who have had the license suspended. A great tool in cities like Salem.
