SEPTA makes a good step toward reducing its emissions and expanding (or at least maintaining) capacity and this guy slams it for not being ideal. Thanks for the feedback. Obviously one great way to define the critical narrative moments in your animation is to act the performance out using a stop watch. Forcing yourself to compress time into the bare essentials so you can squeeze in all the required elements in the limited frames of your shot is extremely helpful. Video taping your performance also adds to your critical eye as you can watch it over and over again and even show it to others to see if the narrative registers strongly with them. If acting isnt your thing, try directing. Get a friend or relative to do the performance on camera for you and direct them as best you can. If that still doesnt work, sketch the key poses. Never sketch anything ambigous when doing this exercise. The pose, all by itself, should register the critical moments in the narrative. They are like self-contained stories. Notice how none of these examples have anything to do with actually sitting down and animating. Not locking these concepts down before sitting down to animate is the worst thing you can do. I call these guys "arm chair animators". Get out of your chair and make sure the blueprints of your narrative have been layed out before even keying a single pose in maya. Thanks for the question! A broken rig or a poorly weighted character is going to cloud the quality of the animation, there is no question about that. A broken rig should be avoided at all costs if you cannot fix it yourself, or if you are not in a production pipeline and having it fixed by someone else is impossible for some reason. If you are unable to achieve the poses you need, then clearly you will not be able to execute the animation at the level you wish. If the problem is weighting, then I would suggest parenting rough pieces of polygonal geometry to the character's joints, creating what some of us call a low-res "tootsie" character. Yes, Tootsie just like the chocolate rolls. By parenting the pieces you keep the rig light, and you can then hide the poorly weighted geometry, and work only with the new low-res character. You may get some intersections between the pieces when posing the character, but this will bother you a lot less than distortion in the geometry, caving in, or twisting, which are common symptoms of bad weighting. You can put all the tootsie pieces on a layer and easily hide them when you wish. Do this until the weighting issue are fixed by yourself or someone else. If this is not possible for some reason, then personally I would only ever show the tootsie geometry when presenting the animation. The poorly weighted geometry will only serve to detract from the animation. But remember, poor or uncreative design, which is what I wrote about, is VERY different from broken design, like broken rigs or incorrect weighting. So in the case of the latter, I do believe it can detract from the quality of the animation, but this is purely because these issues are "wrong" and do not exist in the character's universe, if that makes sense.

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/11/how-does-creating-animation-for-films.html

Hi Jason, thanks for posting.

That is partially true. I say partially because you can get to work on some pretty amazing in-game animation. The animators working with me on Rainbow: Vegas got to work on some really cool scripted events. These are narrative based custom animations, often with multiple characters interacting with each other. This can be way more challenging than many types of shots you may get on a film project. Of course I wont lie to you. Working in games can have a lot of cycles, and short animations that are required to create blends between other animations. But games have come a long way, and the public's expectations of game animation has increased dramatically over the years as the technology has evolved. So if you are someone who likes to brainstorm, figuring out how to push the envelope within the constraints of the system, and if you are someone who can handle a mix of both cool and not-so-cool animations, then you could find the gaming pipeline very fulfilling. You can work on tons of film shots that offer little to no creative fulfillment. But the point of my article was to express how the immediate need for a high level of aesthetic quality is very different between the two pipelines. If you can live with that, then games can be an awesome place to be.

Cheers! I hope that helps :)

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/11/how-does-creating-animation-for-films.html

That is true Pawel. But remember, cutscenes and cinematics in games are VERY often completely different teams than those working on in-game animations. My article is specifically about the difference between film and in-game pipelines. Most cinematics or cut-scene animations are created by a team modelling themselves on a film pipeline. It's all pre-rendered right? So they wont succumb to the same limitations as an in-game pipeline.

Yes, a lot of it is mocap, and it is infinitely more expensive to employ key framers to create custom scripted animations from scratch. But it does happen. In the case of Rainbow: Vegas I had many animators work on custom dialogue-driven scripted events knowing I would eventually mocap many of those events as we had hundreds to go through. Even if it is just to create rough blocking of scripted animations to get them into the engine while the project waits for a mocap date to come along, an in-game animator can be greatly challenged and greatly fulfilled by the needs of the project.

But it is important not to confuse the cinematics team with an in-game team. You can be hired to work on in-game animations and never get to touch a pre-rendered scene. The cinematics teams could be in another building or even another country! They could be part of the company, or outsourced to another company.

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/11/how-does-creating-animation-for-films.html

Hi again! We're talking about the same thing but you are referring to cut-scenes where I repeatedly refer to scripted events. If you take a look at my previous comments where I refer to scripted events (think cut scenes here), you'll see that we actually agree with each other. I usually think of cut-scenes as pre-renders, but that is not always the case, and this is where I probably mis-led you.

Cheers!

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/11/how-does-creating-animation-for-films.html

Hi Steve! Thanks for posting! You have an "artist's complex". I just made that up hehe :) What I mean is, you are never convinced your work is really good. Well guess what? Most of us, even with years and years of experience, are never really convinced our work is good. A lot of us think of animation as an extremely difficult craft. Sure, you build confidence and get better and more efficient over the years, but as an artist you have a constant desire to grow and evolve, and you always see your work as something that could be better if you just had more time or more guidance. believe it or not, these feelings about your work are extremely healthy. Because it means you are always itching to do better. So to answer your question, you are never truly convinced you know what you are doing. Every shot is a new puzzle, every animation a new challenge. The simplest animations can make you crazy, and what you thought were the most complex might be fairly easy for you. You are not alone in these feelings. Any time I receive a new shot, I go through the psychology of "what if I cant get it", "what if people see it's weak", "what if my bosses lose confidence in my abilitie". In certain ways, that mentality can be your strength.

Now, about experience. I have looked at your work on AM. I can easily tell you that you are doing a great job. You are only in term 2 and already producing better animations than I ever did in that amount of time. Those people with more experience than you are your life line actually. Grow through them. You always want to work in an environment where you can learn from your peers. Once you stop learning then it's time to move on. You are definitely on the right track. Absord it all, keep learning, and try not to sweat the psychology part. Just create, create, and create some more. It will all click. But speaking for myself, it will probably never click 100%, and that's what will drive you.

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/11/how-does-creating-animation-for-films.html

Probably shouldnt post on my wife's account! :)

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/11/how-does-creating-animation-for-films.html

Hi Carlos.

The animator doesn't actually know how to create all those cycles. Creating animation and any other assets for a game is purely iterative. The speed of the animation, how easily the key poses read when playing back the animation, where the animation cycle starts, and the number of transition animations you create around that cycle, are all unknowns. This was essentially the point of my article. In games you simply have to keep building, working extremely closely with the programmers and game designers to build a complex system based around the abstract concept known as "fun". For example, on Rainbow: Vegas we created animations for the same gameplay systems for years. In some cases, a simple game design change could wipe out tons of animations and force us to rebuild them in a different way. In other cases, we couldnt guage how fast or slow animations needed to be because game design had to create a fun balance between playability and realism.

As for Assassin's Creed, I do not know the specifics of how animation was built for that game. I am fairly sure they used an innovative system that greatly differed from the way we built animation for the games I worked on. But unfortunately I do not know the specifics. But I can definitively tell you that no matter what technology or methodology is used for creating and implementing game animation, it is always iterative and there are absolutely no shortcuts.

I hope this helps!

Re: http://www.animationtipsandtricks.com/2008/10/what-should-be-main-goal-in-scene.html

HI there Copper.

Re: http://www.critshappen.com/2009/05/durotar-realms-update.html

I ran the Haruka team and barely got the win. If we fail to compare and teach both, we fail to challenge ourselves to push the boundries of what we know already. If Evolution was an exact science, my support would be with its teaching, however, until it is proven otherwise, it is not fair to eliminate other venues. For those out there that think Intelligent Design pushes religious views, the same could be applied to those that teach and preach Darwins theories. It comes down to a battle of beliefs; some believe the theories of Darwin, some believe a higher power is at work. One of my classes in college compared the two theories and really opened my eyes to ideas and thoughts on both sides of the spectrum. By eliminating the offering of a different view we are teaching our children that it's ok to put limitations on what they are capable of doing and to never explore the unexplained. Have we come so far???? As far as Jims comment of fraud, c'mon!!! Something must have rubbed you the wrong way. With all the questions you pose for ID (i.e. who created the intellegent designer), the same can be said for evolution (where are transitional forms, what caused us to be here to beging with - nothingness??? How did nothingness become something, what pushed it, etc... They are beliefs and theories. As long as they are beliefs and theories, they need to be offered together.

Re: Back After The Break….

Many practicing Chiropractors still don't believe in the germ theory of disease and are confident that they can treat things like infections and cancer through spinal manipulation and the fictional "sublucattions". If the LBS wants what the consumer has to offer (their money) then the LBS needs to give the consumer what they want which is in part cheaper prices. As beautifully romantic the notion of supporting the LBS is I work too hard for my money to have to prop up a LBS that isn't servicing my needs. I don't think it's all the LBS's fault but the business model has to change and the winging needs to stop. The internet isn't going away. They need to adapt to survive and part of that adaption is to make the distributors more accountable. At the moment the distributors are the ones killing the LBS. If they looked after the LBS better then the LBS could look after the customer better and more business would flow through them both. Support the LBS? I'd love to but they need to support me as well.

Re: The Ultimate Bike Room

Does he have a separate room for weight lifting?

Re: What You Missed This Morning…In America

Wow.. awesome. great photos

Re: Creationists Pollute Young Minds at Museum on Nightline - ExChristian.Net - Articles

Those dipshits.

Evolution can't be observed--fine.

Creationism can't be observed--fine.

Evolution is an assertion based on observed phenomena. I'd recommend it.

In ninety nations, people spend less each year than we in the United States spend on our garbage bags.

Each year more Americans declare bankruptcy than graduate from college

We have twice as many malls as high schools.

We spend more on shoes, jewelry, and watches than on higher education

Our supermarkets have 250 percent more items than they did twenty years ago.

Parents spend six hours shopping each week, and fourty minutes playing with their children.

Only one-fourth of shoppers have a particular purchase in mind when they go to the mall

Seventy percent of Americans visit a mall each week; that's more than visit houses of worship

The assumption that everyone is a customer to be marketed is a great pitfall for those who proclaim the gospel, because we tend to cast God as a product, and as mainstream a product as possible. After all, scriptural teaching about the curse, death as the wages of sin, the flooding of the earth, the killing of Egyptian babies, the slaughter of erverts in Sodom and Gomorrah, and the fiery torments of hell is a tough sell even for the best of marketing firms.

Yet today everything from sex to Jesus is pimped, since some preachers have traded in prophecy for pandering. Meanwhile, people have become so seasoned from the years of direct mail, online pop-up ads, commercials, and the endless parade of advertising on everything from billboards to ball caps that they tend to view the church as just another business and the preacher as yet another huckster.
The Radical Reformission, Mark Driscoll. There are some in the world that sleep on the floor because of poverty or worse, because their homes are being riddled with bullets at night and the floor is the safer place to be.

The problems we face over the next 4 years may be substantial, but face it - they are the problems of the privileged. We do have tools at our disposal to fight what we view as ignorance and in some cases downright hatred. To not be like them, we have to have a clear view of who we are and our capablities.

I know that I can write in my blog almost everyday. If I can do this, than I can write a letter or send an e-mail to every politician that I hear on the news that pisses me off. What if each of us did this? We now can use the motivation of the scared and angry to spearhead efforts towards stating what we find to be unacceptable. Rosa Parks was just one woman who refused to accept the state of things. You and I have never had to suffer the prejudice that a black woman not so very long ago faced.

What you have said is of interest - it mirrors what many of us are feeling. No doubt you will have a lot more interesting things to say.

As far as being doomed - I can't help but smirk at that. We live in a country that is a world power - the largest world power where the threats of terrorism are the lesser than that of any other place on the planet. If you are speaking of doom as that of our species, well that makes more sense but I think it is a safe bet you and I will live to see old age.

Again I'm sorry for the lecture - but I have to think that there are solutions to the present day situations we are facing. I'm not exactly sure where I'm going from here, but I'm going somewhere with the atittude that things will change. Remember the elected officials still work for us as well as the others.

Re: Get over yourself

Um - your welcome.

Me have flu 2. The results are within the margin of error currently, but if the trending is right, it may be breaking back Hillary's way. Furthermore, Obama is facing a serious challenge from Edwards, who appears to be making a surge and his numbers are drawing him closer to Obama. In our view, Edwards does not have a real shot at the nomination long term, both from an electability standpoint and a resource standpoint. A win or even a close third place run though will keep him in the game for a little longer, but ultimately his campaign is going to succumb to the liberal, left wing lack of depth and intellectual honesty in his campaign. We think Obama will manage to weather this late inning challenge and hold Edwards at bay to finish a near second to Clinton. However, in our view, the Clinton campaign should manage to edge Obama out with a win in excess of the margin of error. Political Season says Clinton wins by a 5-7% margin of victory.

Re: Mel Gibson lashes out during ‘Apocalypto’ screening - News

Hey Western oppressor, if God didn't want us to sacrifice humans, he wouldn't have made them so delicious!

Re: I Never Had Much Use For Book Learnin’

Let's be fair... that writer was clearly not educated. ;)

Re: Who Polls Ballot Issues Best?

Hmm... Your Ref I actual result is off. Yes, that is how Fox is portraying it.. but in fact, there are no different scientific opinions in the peer reviewed journals. Global warming is universally accepted by qualified scientists. Among peer reviewed publications on the subject there is no debate. The conclusions are that it IS real and that humans ARE to blame for the majority of it.
If you want to cut through the propaganda, read what reputable scientists say.

Re: FOX ATTACKS! He'll have them on his show, but he hardly lets them get a word in while he spews out his views. There is absolutely nothing impartial about that sorry excuse of a human being.
And as for those who say "if you don't like it, change the channel," that isn't the point.
The point is that you're exposed to half truths and outright lies when watching that kind of crap.
People who don't know any better will believe this stuff and then tell the lies, (which they believe to be true) to others. It was more to point out that there was a reason behind the attack, and that if you look at things from both side, in a lot of ways we haven't been a whole lot better in the way we've gone about things. Though we do have a lot more resources, so we can at least do a little better about getting some military targets along with the "collateral damage."

And as a note to go along with that, not everyone who's politics/life style America disagrees with had something to do with the 9/11 attack. While you may think it is a great thing (and in some cases perhaps it is) to clean house for everyone else, I for one find it far too costly a path to continue. In every possible sense.

You know, sometimes I wonder what goes through the heads of people like you. Evolution is conveyed as if it were fact; Who's to say there isn't a different way it all went down, maybe even aside from Creationism. Why all of a sudden does one man come up with a theory and now its science. Doesn't that seem a little rediculous. Creationism doesn't sound anymore plausible I agree, however it's a different point of view and should be expressed. Why is everyone so close minded, do you think its going to make more people believe in God. Is that a bad thing?? How many of us believe in something so different from that anyway (i.e. evoution- creation from nothing). Kinda sounds the same huh???

Re: Intelligent-design ruling could affect Ohio schools - ExChristian.Net - News and Opinion

Dave8:

I'm glad you took the time to break my statments down individually and respond to each.
As far as the Nipple, I was simply stating an answer to a question, not trying to rub it in his face. The point was there are a lot questions out there about our world. When people don't understand they tend to question a plan or a plan designer (evolutionists), only to find that they are being discovered by science.

I have studied both views extensively; for you to comment about me taking my nose out of the Bible shows me you so caught up on one irrevocable fact that any view aside from evoution would have to be based on the Bible. I am a individual who always questions the unanswered. When you state that evolution is not taught as fact, when is the last time you heard a scientist or a teacher of evolution say, "The world might be 4 billion years old"??? You never will because they, teach it as such.

I am bipartisan on the subject to be completely honest. I see complexities that can be explained by both theories. On one hand, I see carbon dating; I am aware of half-lives and how things break down only leading to one thing; a very old earth. However, I see the moon; and when we were landing on it for the first time; leading scientist were expecting feet upon feet of cosmic dust only to find about 6 inches of it; leading me to believe the earth is young.

I'm really did not come on this site to start a squable. I just wanted to gather insight as to why some are so against having 2 points of view!!! I appreciate everyones input.

Re: Intelligent-design ruling could affect Ohio schools - ExChristian.Net - News and Opinion

Ok this is my last posting because everyone in here thinks that just because someone says Creation or ID it automatically personifies God and that he controls everything (like we are puppets). If you are in a classroom disecting a frog, I can promise you you won't find directions in the Bible, that is ludicrous. Science simply defines and explains anomalies in our world and how they function. How many of you have seen ciriculum for ID?? I would wager none or very few of you. How can you be so critical of something you have never seen or researched. I have seen both, because I have been taught both. Both teach how a flower forms, how a-sexual reproduction happens, it tells you about how cells work at every level. It's not a bible class that teaches theology; this is a severe misconception. They are not that different with respect to how the earth and the heavens were formed and the fact that things were created not evolved. That actually comprised a very small portion of both cirriculum for ID. Believe it or not, science and ID can be taught in a symbiotic relationship. I'll be the first to tell you that Creation has gaps and lacks evidence (i.e. I understand if the earth is only 6k old we would not be able to see stars so many light years away), but evolution provides just as many gaps. Again, science is an entity that stands alone to disprove or verify. Although science has opened our eyes to many phenomenon, speculation is the best it can do regarding our origins, granted as is the same with Creation; guess it will continue to be a matter of beliefs or opinions. I greatly appreciated all your input, thanks and have a great day and holiday season...

Re: Ron Jeremy vs. Craig Gross - ExChristian.Net - News and Opinion

Can anyone find a video of this?
"A"

Re: Becky Garrison: Bathroom Humor

God I hate when you people leave those annoying tracts all over the place (though they are a step-up from Chick-tracts). They have not eliminated the fact that there could be other reasons for these happenings around the earth. Look at Japanese Art over the centuries - Fuji has had its snow cap change all the time - and it took years for it to happen. Oceans rising - Florida is going to flood. Then why are they experiencing so many sink holes that are a product of lack of water? Yes the glaciers are 'receding', but the polar caps are getting thicker. So rather than being large and flat - could they be getting smaller but thicker? Same amount of ice/water...just distributed differently. Someone wrote an article on this site about the Greenland icecap receding at a rate of a football field a day. That is an average of 2 miles a month along the edge of the cap. Satellite pictures do not support this claim. So many things wrong, so little time.

Re: Video: Tony Campolo on Jesus and Taxes

Tony C. try looking up "Dr" Kent Hovind.

Re: Julie Clendenin: Talking to Children About Tragedy

3) where did Cho learn to handle automatic weapons so professionally, given he apparently had no military experience? Has there been any development on his behalf that has caused you to re-evaluate your opinion?

Anthony, to characterize the drafts as "moneyball" is wildly incorrect. Also, I'm not really sure what you're getting at with regard to BA. If BA's opinion on the farm system is what matters to you, then you should be happy to know that BA has graded Jason's two drafts as the 2nd best and the best in baseball. If BA's opinion is irrelevant and it's actual major league results that matter, then I think the recent performance of Sox Prospects Papelbon, Hanley Ramirez, Youkilis, and Meredith speak for themselves as all four are products of the Red Sox player development system.

Re: Game consoles and all their dimensions

The ps3 is 8726 centimeters cubed, while the 360 is 6616 centimenters cubed...isnt that more then mere micrometers???

Re: Spirit in the Machine - finding spiritual connection via the social web

I was at a willow creek conference (I used to think those guys were pretenders) last week. Awesome.

A key take away for me was to engage in the pursuit of Justice as a trigger for spiritual growth. Depending on someone bigger than yourself can only happen in our lives if we take on tasks bigger than ourselves, and certainly Justice fits the bill.

The challenge came from a fellow named Gary Haugen - President of International Justice Mission (you got to check this shit out -crazy!) Thes guys are passonate about lifting the poor and oppressed - literally by saving people from slavery and prostitution in 3rd world countries.

Check it out: http://www.ijm.ca

Also, check out his book "Just Courage" - and check out this video of him explaining why he wrote the book:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_Tkrnh8KlAg

aaron

Re: A Mashup a Day Keeps The Doctor Away

Lets bask in MY AMAZINGNESS.

no really, I'm cooler than all YOOOOUU's

*sigh*

puhh-leeez Soulja Boy?

only the Go-Go's could've saved this one :)

Re: I’d like seven more please…

This is from memory, if I find the recipe and it's different, I'll let you know. My family background is fully Swedish on both sides and this is the recipe we have passed down in the family. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

2 eggs

2 cups milk

1 cup flour

1 tbsp butter

1-2 tbsp sugar

dash of salt

Blend all ingredients. Heat good nonstick skillet to medium-high temp. Add 1/3 to 1/2 cup of batter to pan, depending on pan size, and roll to cover pan evenly. Cook until one side is dry and bubbly. Carefully flip and cook other side until slightly browned.

It's also great to add fresh fruit, cinnamon and sugar, cottage cheese, etc. to the filling. MMMMMMMMM.

Re: My first time in a mosque

Salaam! I just finished reading this "article" while eating my pre-fajr meal. Thank you for taking me along on this journey. As a convert to Islam, I could strongly relate to what was written between the lines. Please stay "present" and humble and pay attention to even the smallest of signs on yor journey less you miss the exit and take the long way home. Are you familiar with the work of Zaytuna Institute in California? I serve as the audiovisual artist/engineer there and most of the photography, audio and video content on the site were produced by me, alhamdulillah. I feel/hope that you will find much benefit from the combined resources on our website at, www.zaytuna.org. Why can't we give access to discussion on theological topics to everyone? So many people are confused or don't know about the salvation army's theology. There's a conference down at geelong this month i think that i would love to go to, but at $150 is not an option. Could we explore the posibility of having regular forums where people can meet with salvation army leaders to discuss topics such as theology and mission? A corp could hold this and the cost to people would be significantly lower giving access to many people who usually couldn't afford it, especially young salvationists. This would give many in the salvation army the opportunity to discover more about what we believe and our mission, which would be especially good for younger people. What's your thought commisioner??? What's everyone else's thoughts?
Aaron

Re: Official Sneaker Templates

so could someone make a template for New Balance?

Re: Twitter is a Conversation Hub, But It’s Only One of Many

Booyah! Who knows. :) Thanks for the comment :D

Re: Clanwars Intro Test

Oh yeah I bet I will have tons of fun. haha we actually haven't even started to much on the programming just cause the other stuff takes so much time and planning. We started out kind wanting to do it for fun. But after we've done 30-35 pages worth of storyline... I think we can go a little further then that if we take our time and do everything correctly. So we won't be doing too much modeling for a while :P Maybe playing around some. Even concept drawings we are trying to go back and make sure in words any concept artist can pretty much picture what we want just by a simple description.

Re: Hey ya’ll :D

Sweet! I am actually moving to Cincinnati, OH in mid-August/Sept and I'm looking for a Finance-related job. Unfortunately, as per your post, I've seen that finance jobs have slowed down in the Cincy area...and after searching on several job boards, I definitely agree. Any suggestions on any other measures I can take to ensure I get a job by t hen? Any placement/staffing agencies you would personally recommend? It's a lot harder for me since I'm an entry-level financial analyst but I have 1 year work experience in consulting. Thanks for any help/advice you can provide!

- Aaron

Re: More economic delays hit Metro Light Rail

It's a shame to see this - this is the time to be doing this kind of building, to provide some employment and move some money through the system.

Re: Some of my favorite movies

Also in 2006 (I think) a great Turkish-German film called Head-On, which falls into the category of "hard to watch," but is worth every cringe.

Re: Whoa

I think Gregg's reason may actually be more pragmatic: I have heard that the governor wouldn't guarantee appointing a Republican to fill his senate seat, which would tip the balance in the Senate (depending on the Norm Coleman lawsuit against Al Franken's electoral victory in MN) to where the Democrats would be able to overturn a filibuster.

Re: Keynesianism Vs. It was an issue of race, or sexual preference. Describing Jews as 'bankers' was a way to get people to focus their ire, to engage ethnic stereotypes, to inflame an existing prejudice. But the prejudice itself came first. That is not what's happening now.

Now, another thing about your recent posts, dg, that concerns me, is that you seem to be trying to claim a certain kind of authenticity by identifying a holocaust survivor whom you recognized in a film about Auschwitz.

If I trot out the survivor friend of my family who was a lifelong leftie, a doctor who was a proponent of, for example, socialized medicine, does that impact this discussion? Does it make my opinion more worthy?

I would have to say in both our cases it doesn't, except perhaps to illustrate that you cannot generalize about concentration camp survivors or authenticity. I would have to say it cheapens us. My apologies to my family's friend.

Re: Where orders emerge

For what it's worth, I'm someone who started reading this blog on a friend's advice, and have found it immensely rewarding and edifying, even as it continues to challenge (or enhance, depending on the day) some of my deeply held beliefs. In addition to the authors' posts, I've been grateful for exchanges I've read or had, in the comments section, with Methinks, Daniel, and Vidyohs.

That said, for the past couple months I have stopped reading the comments for the most part, because I found too much of my time was spent parsing through reality-tv-style smackdowns that bore no real meaning or content.

So, as someone who considers himself a student here, some way of maintaining the comments as more than simply opportunities to vent would be welcome.

As I understand it, by the way, Wordpress has the widest range of options of any of the popular blogging software.

Re: Probably No God On The Buses

Sounds like the Atheist Campaign should change its name to the Skeptical Agnostic Campaign.

Re: Book Review: Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson

so, you don't care for unhappy endings?

Re: I hate my sister, she’s such a bitch.

I HATE MY SISTER AS WELL SHE IS ALWAYS THERE AND WHEN I TELL MY DAD HE ALWAYS HITS ME I WISH I COULD HIT HER SO HARD THAT SHE WOULD BLEED TO DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Wrong Combination Of Words

hey u'r aq right cassanova aint you.

You could have said[Option 6: Wow you look very feminine, very impressive.] JUST A SAGESTION BOSS.

Re: Short Notes: They Don’t Pay Me Enough To Accept Your Comments

Jose comments like the one you received from that "teacher blog" are the reason why many popular bloggers in 2008 have permanently disallowed all comments. You're still going to have record labels because crap bands like Nickelback, and Avril are still going to go by the old model because they want to be super rich, and they want that "safety" of a major label. This is a cool thing to do, and cheers to Radiohead for doing it, but this isn't going to change anything as long as we still have "musicians" who buy into the "we need a label to put out our music and tell us what to do" method of being a rock star.

Re: Album Review: Alicia Keys – As I Am

It is improvement over her other albums…the writing is good, not to sure about the singing. Although a vital soundtrack to my college experience, nothing within Dookie indicated that some fifteen years later Green Day would morph into astute social critics crafting bitter agitprop, three-chords at a time. Friday the band releases 21st Century Breakdown, their 8th studio album, continuing where ‘04’s exceptional rock opera American Idiot left off, trading Bush-era frustration and anger with Obama-era resignation at the morass that remains after Bush’s departure from office. Despite Obama’s “Yes We Can” rhetoric Green Day are clearly not a happy bunch of boys.

Divided into three acts (“Heroes and Cons,” “Charlatans and Saints,” and “Horseshoes and Handgrenades”) 21st Century Breakdown is a narrative concept much like American Idiot was that follows a couple named Christian and Gloria as they navigate the minefield of issues that remain in Bush’s wake. Those issues are numerous and grand. Be it religious hypocrisy (“East Jesus Nowhere”) or government’s apparent apathy for its people (“21 Guns”) no target is sacred. And the title track may be the strongest Green Day song to date, a multipart piece lamenting the failed promise of our previous generations (“We are the desperate in the decline/Raised by the bastards of 1969”).

Granted, preaching of this magnitude may be a difficult pill to swallow from celebrated multimillionaires that were once so indifferent to life in general they couldn’t be pried off their mother’s couch. But by the same token not many bands are urging people to think, be active, wake up to what is going on around them and fight for a better world.

Re: Blinded By The Hype? I based my opinion off of what I have learned about the country's history of natural exploitation. When we run out of the nuclear fuel stockpile that is, apparently, "waiting to be burned", I predict that we will turn to the resources waiting in the yet-to-be-mined areas of the country. That is a personal concern of mine. I understand the benefits of nuclear power and I see the benefits it has over carbon, but the fact remains that uranium is another finite resource that we have here on earth. I am and will remain open to the possibilities of any solution to the planet's energy crisis.

Re: What I heard about Forsberg today

Forsberg will always be an Av...Something seemed weird with Forsberg's demeanor after the Preds put the Avs out of the playoff race, and I honestly felt that Forsberg knew after that particular game that he would try to come back to Denver...I think he'll be back if he'll take between 3-4 million, but no more than that.

Re: What I heard about Forsberg today

If not for skill, let it be honorary to have Foppa retire an Av. When I switched from a (whole foods) vegan diet to a (also whole foods) meat-based one, the effect on my health was profound (the new diet was also much healthier than the "normal" diet that preceded my extended experiment with vegetarianism). I still believe that factory farms are an abomination. I wish I knew the best case scenario for raising livestock -- i.e., with a diet based on grazing native grasses on marginal land. I wonder how far that kind of husbandry can scale.

Re: ForestChoice Pencils: Aromatic and Sustainable

What's funny is that this is the only FSC certified lumber that Home Depot carries after all the pressure to stop logging old growth Hem-Fir forests in Oregon.

Re: Sustain MiniHome: Sustainable Prefab Now.

I finally saw the miniHome today. Most people touring the prototype know nothing about the project, and Andy was happy to spend time discussing the details with someone who has been enthusiastically following its progress.

A miniHome like the prototype (which includes photovoltaic panels, a wind turbine, and a green roof) will cost a maximum of 145K CAD (about 126K USD). It's expected to cost much less (about 120K CAD) once enough buyers sign up; the prototype didn't have the benefit of volume discounts. That price includes everything, including delivery and setup (siting and levelling, seeding the green roof, etc.). The miniHome is intended as a turnkey solution.

The Whispergen option isn't all that practical currently. It would add at least $15K to the price, and it has to be calibrated for a particular blend of biodiesel. Andy really wishes it were more affordable; he called propane the "crack cocaine" of off-grid living. Of course, the extremely efficient miniHome doesn't burn much propane.

In Ontario, travel trailer residents can avoid property taxes (because the trailer is legally a vehicle). But MPAC is starting to assess trailers used as permanent residences. A travel trailer with a covered porch addition may be assessed, for example. Andy didn't think that would happen, but based on what I've read, I'm not so sure.

In summary, the miniHome is an extremely well-designed, eco-friendly, self-contained home. Could I live with the limited space, the not insignificant cost, and potential legal restrictions? I have yet to decide.

Re: Green Turtle Beats Hares In Canadian Liberal Party Race

Tyler Hamilton, a journalist and blogger who covers developments in clean technology, commented on Dion's victory. In my experience, mice usually take about thirty seconds to die, even when the bar hits them squarely on the neck. The only instant kills I've seen have been a direct hit to the head. True story: as I was typing that last sentence, a trap got a mouse right on the head, and it still took it more than ten seconds to die. Earlier tonight I saw the other extreme, almost a minute of writhing that left a bloody scene reminiscent of CSI. But anyway, you get my point. And you probably think I live in a house of cheese.

P.S. Thanks to all who have suggested trap ideas.

P.P.S. That would STILL be 125 miles per gallon!! Isn't as impressive as it may seem? What's NOT impressive is that the average fuel economy of cars these days is around 25mpg. The most practical scooter runs just under 10 grand, and... given the size and top speed of it, odds are good that if there isn't legislation concerning electrics, there will be, and an operator will find themselves having to get a motorcycle license, as well as insurance and a plate.... more money to spend.

That's all beside the point. It bothers me that all of these, especially the Vectrix, are little more than toys for the elite.... the rich kids playing revolutionary, trying to do something better for the environment, yet for all the wrong reasons.

I'll stick to my gas-burning honda express in the appropriate months. It's 25 years old, gets excellent gas mileage when you take it easy (about 125mpg), and can be carried over the shoulder if need be. It's not the greatest thing for the environment, but it's better than most cars. Plus, it's a HONDA. Meaning that I won't have to fumble around and find parts for it because it was made by a Chinese companiy that might not exist after six months.

If Honda actually stepped up to the plate and came out with an electric rather than just a prototype, the whole industry would end up following the lead and these devices would become completely practical in the US. There would be a clearly laid out infrastructure to support it, and if you've ever needed a carburetor for an oddball motorcycle, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

The bottomline to all of this? If you want to be green, ride a bicycle above everything else. You can criticize my Express all day long against these electrics, but it's only used for trips that surpass 5 miles. Everything else is pedal powered.

Re: How About Sample Tees over the Weekend?

Hello Rangga,

I think that if your readers like some of the shirts in this blog then they might like ours as well.

BeyondHelp.net has Funny T-Shirts, Offensive T-Shirts, & Wet T-Shirts

Even if you are not looking to buy a shirt just come and check us out for a good laugh. I appreciated this post very much. It's not always easy to be, as you say: "up."

I have lived and worked in Mexico City for the past 8 years, and though I now have a growing family of my own, I still miss my Mom, Dad, brother, and the rest of my family and friends back in Canada. I miss them even more during Christmas.

When I first came to Mexico, I had to face something I never had experienced before: Depression.

Being away from friends and family, having zero Spanish, and zero understanding of the culture and how to walk in it, left me feeling like I had fallen into a deep dark hole.

I think this was one of the most difficult moments of my life so far, but one of the most valuable. I learned something so deep about God: He loves to hang out with the broken hearted. During this time, I came across one verse in the Bible that God used to help me rule over my intense feelings of saddness. It's here: John 14:1 - Let not your heart be troubled; trust in God, trust also in me (Jesus.)

I learned that my thoughts, what I dwelled on in my head, led me to feel, and led me to act. I started "watching" my thoughts, and sure enough, I often found that they were dwelling on my "terrible" situation of being far away from "home", far away from "family" and lost in a language I could barely understand.

I started dwelling instead on John 14:1. Day and night. While commuting. While walking. While starting to feel depressed...I would relentlessly focus my mind on Jesus' words.

I found deep comfort, and after a few weeks, the depression died. Now, 8 years later, it's still dead.

I still feel homesick sometimes, but ...it's much different.

I loved your advice on how to change a tough day into a terrific one:
Starting right, I think, is the most important, and most often one I think I overlook. "Apart from me, you can do nothing." -Jesus. So true. He's where the life is.

Vicky, I pray that God blesses you with His deep comfort, the kind that goes right where we need it the most.

Your friend,
Aaron

Re: 404 : Server Not Found error - Blogger Custom Domain Blogs

Thanks for the tip. I don't see where exerting a little effort to walk/bike/drive/bus to a polling station before or after work is keeping anyone from voting that wants to vote.

Are we too self-absorbed to be "inconvenienced" by voting between 6a and 7p a day or two per year? We've totally lost perspective of our values and have taken our liberty for granted if this is the case.

Leaving the polling places open for days on end just seems like more opportunity for the more sleazy amongst us to bus in voters who are unwittingly swayed to vote one way or the other, or are subtly (or not-so) bribed to vote. Just seems to open the whole thing up to more fraud, and Illinois is perhaps the last state that should be implementing measures that could increase fraud.

It's difficult enough in some parts to come up with election judges, so I wonder how that works.

Re: Question of the day

In the name of preserving our local tax bases, I would agree with others on the sales tax on the Internet. I'd be a liar if I said it didn't occasionally effect my shopping decisions.

There's a push to get this done in a lot of states not named Illinois --> http://www.streamlinedsalestax.org/

Illinois, as one might expect, is back-assward on this. I've talked with Illinois' rep to this organization (from the Dept of Revenue), and it is my understanding that there's no push anywhere in the state to move on this and it's going to take a monumental shift in administration (collection, statutes) and political backing to get in line with all the other states adopting the streamlined sales tax initiatives.

I imagine the State will continue to fail to curb spending, increase revenues and fund it's long term obligations (pensions) appropriately, which is why I'm losing the desire to hang around my home state much longer since I have a lot of years left to live. In 30 years, either my wife's downstate teacher pension will be cut deeply, the contribution rate will skyrocket or our taxes will rocket to make up for today's failure to properly fund the system. With all the new funding initiatives, like the kids health care, the need to overhaul school funding, and two inept, corrupt political parties, I don't see Illinois solving its budget problems anytime in the near future.

Re: Obama to stay neutral

That was my first thought as well.

- Mis...statement - Wednesday, Feb 1, 06 @ 5:25 pm:

Obama’s statement: “…Senator Obama believes the voters should decide the outcome of this election.”

Does that mean when he DOES endorse someone, he’s expecting that he, and not the voters, should determine the outcome?

Re: A play for the endorsement?

These comments are representative of the statewide problem; everyone wants to debate who did worse in the past in an attempt to assign blame to today's problems. At this point, what good does it do to determine what % of fault Edgar or any other prior governor is responsible for.

We're here today, and today we have a choice in making pension/debt funding a priority or not. The current administration and legislature has clearly shown it's not a priority, nad has in fact exacerbated the problem. That's here and now.

I just hope to heck someone walks the walk real soon because the future financial health has already been compromised. I just wonder how much farther behind our elected officials are willing to let the state go just to save their positions.

I also wonder how many political hacks, voters and poster like yourselves are willing to watch this go on just so their party of choice can remain in power on the backs of our futures.

Re: Just in time for primary day

I'm not an expert, but I'm curious... how bad a sign is it that you're an incumbent, and someone gets 32% of the vote in your own primary?

Re: Guv: “Stay tuned” on tollway leasing

I don't like the idea of a private group making a profit directly off of a publicly funded state asset. I've decided that physicians and nurses have incommensurable perspectives on patient care, and that this rift stems from differences in our educational and training experiences. Physicians should keep that in mind when a nurse fails to appreciate the importance of something a physician requests, or asks what seem like questions with "obvious answers". Every question is an opportunity to teach. And being rude, as you say, is never acceptable.

Re: Question(s) of the day

The site is tough on the Blackberry Curve. I prefer the 5 innings rule. And what if the game gets called with half an inning to play??? Teams have to book new flights and come all the way back just for a few minutes of play??? Sure, it ensures that one team didn't get screwed out of a possible win, but it seems like it's more money and trouble then it is worth.

Re: http://hgamer.blogspot.com/2007/06/open-worlds.html

I didn't like Morrowind's complete lack of direction either, but I'm always praying for more open-ended single-player games. I don't buy games anymore unless they offer more than a couple weeks of gameplay, because games are cheap.

The main problem with Oblivion's open-ended gameplay is that the stuff you do off the linear paths has no purpose (beyond loot and xp) and little importance in the gameworld. Clear out a cave of goblins, nobody will thank you for it, and whatever refills the cave will be something predictable and equally meaningless.

Open-ended gameplay will be more attractive when non-linear adventures have an effect on the world. I'm hoping Two Worlds will offer some proof toward that theory.

Re: Lily Allen

I often see artists as aloof and on a different planet, so to speak, and I even expect that now; it adds to their mystique and helps me identify them as an artist. I don't know why I want to see a list of what I've listened to so much, but I do. I see my music taste as a little bizarre, and it's fantastic to find people with a similar music taste.

I hate to say it but I do like myspace as far as finding music goes. As long as I ignore the emo element of myspace, I don't feel so dirty. It's also interesting as it makes you feel "closer" to certain artists, artists who are actively using myspace anyway. The ability to receive bulletins on an artists new shows is certainly interesting, and I'd probably really like it if I lived in a city that wasn't musically dead. Listening to a track or three of an artist on myspace is also excellent.

If there were a p2p "revolution" at the moment it'd have nothing to do with the mechanics of downloading music, but how you find the music. For instance, before i'd just enter "radiohead" into the search box, and my music taste really wouldn't diversify -- diversification is important to me. The seminal points of my musical discovery came from two people I met in real life who told me about aphex twin and serge gainsbourg respectively. But now thanks to various communities (hello fizikz) and sites which link you to similar artists (hello last.fm and myspace music to a certain extent) my musical experience on the internet is far better. This is thank you to everyone on fizikz who've recommened albums and artists ;)

Thanks to the internet my music taste has gone from the beatles and cliff richard (hey i was 7 and it was the only music my household had!) to aphex twin, mozart, dj shadow and serge gainsbourg :)

Aaron (aka Weeks)

Re: Music and the Internet

"Just bands, music and fans" that's a good tag-line ;)

Re: Unearthing MySpace Gems

masha qrella is quite good!

Re: Hip-Hop/Hip-Pop

Hip-Pop does annoy me. At least there's mf doom, aesop rock, mr. lif, outkast, etc. I love old-school Hip-Hop as well: a tribe called quest, early de la soul, etc.

There seems to be a hip-hop culture at the moment that has more to do with lifestyle that creating good music. I just don't think they care, wrapped up with what their record company tells them.

It's even effected De La Soul. Have you listened to their latest stuff? It seriously depresses me.

I can't figure out who's facilitating this culture. Is it the fan-base who want their artists to be acting a certain way; or is it the artists that are acting in a certain spoilt-brat way that the music buying drones lap up because "it has to be cool because it's done by hip-hop artists?"

Maybe there's a part of this fan-base that want "hoes and guns" and they like to see their "idols" doing this, so they can "live the dream" in a sense. It's sublime!

Double albums are good when they take you on a journey, trying not to be too cheesy. For instance, a lot of the tracks on Druqks aren't filler tracks, but they're not your standard track that's trying to be a "hit" either; they're creating a mood.

Double albums that are trying for hit after hit normally fail though. It's hard enough to find an album with 10 or so really decent tracks, nevermind 20. You'd need a really excellent band to pull off a double album, a band like The Beatles.

The White Album / Indian Summer.

Re: Return to Oz

Thanks. Imagine what your mother'd think: "I'm a little worried about Gavin, he's named his dog after himself and he's now talking to him, talking to him about me!" Ever noticed how dog is an anagram for God? Why wasn't that in the Da Vinci Code? He'll probably lead you to the Holy Grail too. Call him God! I like Moran a lot, particularly taken back. Moran is probably one of the best things I've heard on myspace (only probably though -- i've still a soft spot for that hugely disturbing Russian.) The others didn't really excite me that much.

Through following various links from those pages I've discovered Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah and Architecture in Helsinki, not to mention some bizarre french crooner. It's understandable you feel under the weather. I'm sure if Joe Cole manages to score another goal like his last one you'll soon perk up.

I'm pleased Australia got through to the second round. I expect your neighbours (well ok, not your neighbours, but perhaps the televisual sort of neighbours) feel the same. If the socceroos manage to beat Italy, Italy may completely disintergrate as a nation. Apparently the Italian newspapers are saying this is not so much about the world cup, but Italy itself. But nevertheless, you've got to support the underdogs!

I'm looking forward to an exciting second round. Sweden vs. Germany, Mexica vs. Argentina, Portugal vs. Holland all sound very exciting.

My musical recommendation this week is Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens! It's rather special, that album. Then I watched it and ouch, that was some very edited-for-tv stuff.

The noticable stuff that was removed was:

1. The witch that invites Conan in that tries to sex him up before she kills him.

2. Removed "drug" scene where they purchase Stigian Black Root from the guy that tells them about the tower of snakes.. "chew it slowly, this is the good stuff!"

3. Drunken Conan punches a camel.

4. Nude-ish slave girls inside mount doom.

5. In the final battle, guy with a big hammer hits booby trap and gets impaled by a spike.

6. The movie had a lots of little edits that seem to just be done to make it shorter.. like the wizard saying "I killed him with my speeearrr!" upon killing the only person he kills in the movie.

Kind of odd to see the pg-edit since the SNL skit "Dick in a box" appears in its uncensored form.

Re: showing off hulu

Another odd thing that just occurred to me, those little dots that denote where a comercial is to be didnt have any comercials at all during the movie. So far I might as well be talking to Rowland Martin or Thomas Sowell.I know its very tricky to be part of the game and try to represent our people. However the time to get beyond all this illusionary presidential BS and symbolic tokenism is coming soon.Obviously everyone is not on that level. Ther are no higher are lower levels just different levels of perception. In a way either youre thare are youre not its difficult to expand perception However at some point we have to start in order to aquire real power.Until we control major world assets the president will be white no matter his color. This whole election charade could set race relations and blacks back.It is my contention that Obama was coerced into running for the purpose of chaos division and confusion.Power against thrives on these elements.Look at all the division thats being caused and its really going to get worst after the convention.First he was the media darling now theyre bringing out factual negatives.Every thing we see is being orchestrated by major players in the game of mass media manipulation.TOO MUCH TO GO INTO AT ONCE TIME. READ MY OTHER COMMENTS FOR MORE DETAIL.Look at the flag on Obamas convention invitation and then goole rules for flag display.Enough said

Re: First Trailer for Richard Kelly's 'The Box'

I think the trailer may have lowered my hopes a bit, but I am still looking forward to this. I really do hope this is his comeback, given how much I love Donnie Darko. I feel though, that the trailer almost seems rushed, incomplete... I think that there could have been a bit more explanation, but then again, this IS Richard Kelly we're talking about here. As for Diaz, well, I wasn't too annoyed by her accent, though that may be because I'm naturally used to those kinds of voices, but whatever. I just really want this film to be good and do well, I think that's the most important thing (captain obvious rambling, sorry).

Oh and that song is the theme to the Saw films.
