Is very nice to see that the portuguese wines have this kind of critics. I have a litle wine shop here in Portugal, were i try to have some "pearls", that are hard to find at the large surfaces that we have in our country. Our objective is to give a personalized treatment to our customers.
Between the "pearls" in our store, i am proud to have this two wines, Verdelho (José Maria da Fonseca) and Camélia. The first producer is one of the larger wineries here in Portugal, but is a wine with a short production, made by the chief enologist (Domingos Soares Franco). As you wll say, the grapes Verdelho are very used at Madeira´s, and this experience in Terras do Sado were one of the best experiences i have ever tasted in my life. As for Camélia, is a wine from a small producer, with an also small production, but is really one of the best mono-varietals with Loureiro grapes that i have experienced. I have heard of this wine throug one of my customers, and this is also a good way of knowing waht is beeing produced in our country.
Finally, i just want to say, that i´ll be very interested in continuing reading your site, and i put myself at your disposal for any questions on portugese wines.

Dear Dr. Debs
I am very glad to see that we agree about the difference of portuguese wines. For me, its very nice to see that people around the world already know the personality of our wines. Aniway, is important that we can pass this idea to all the wine lovers, and the best way is of course to try to make a good publicity, in the right means of comunication, and also thrue the right persons. One of my spectations is to pass this information. The interview here at catavino, made by Gabriella was the first time i have ever seen someone so interested in portuguese wines. They are making an excelent job, and i´ve had the oportunity to thanks Gabriella for is attention to me, and for wines of portugal. Lets hope that we can help this hard task, and for us in Vinixá, is an honour to make part of this world, and most of all to have been posted at this wonderfull site.

Well done Gabriella, very good article, excellent description of this grape. In fact it was José Maria da Fonseca the first to give Castelão the fame that we know now. Periquita still is one of the most sold portuguese wines across the world. I think that this wines are a little more balanced then Alentejo wines, and i think that the fact that they are so close to Atlântic ocean is one of the reasons.

Please keep the excellent work, as Portuguese i am proud to have you looking at our wines, with this passion that you put on things.

Great Article Gabriella.

As Portuguese retailer, my opinion is that innovation is good, but only if we know the product very well, and if this product is one that everyone know and enjoys. The reality is that here in Portugal, only a few people know the difference between a ruby port and an aged one, or even a vintage. Well, you can say that innovating is the way to bring people to know port wines better, and that could become true, but in my opinion I think that the port wine producers must give more information to the consumers. Port is an excellent product, original and unique, and yet so unknown even in its own country... As consumer of port wines, only now at 43 am I finding the real excellence of this product, because of the deficit of information given to consumers. But honestly i am not very interested in tasting this pink port for now. I am more curious in trying to get my hands on some pearls that are waiting for me to taste them... maybe a Vargellas 2004... :-)

Thank you Gabriella... you made very happy... why? because i´ve already seen that scene far too many times here in Portugal... Here we have several companys, EDP (electricity), PT (phones, internet, etc..) and all the water supplying companys... No one takes responsibility for anything, because you only talk with someone seated, with earphones, and they don't get paid enough to help you... try to be motivated on 400 euros per month... So, the solution is, my friend... try not to suffer, and hope that this kind of problem only happens to others... But, i must say this, have you thought of writing for theatre? I am sure that you would be a success.... I had to close the door to the store so that i could laugh at ease... :-)

Well it was the first time for me... the first word for Gary´s performance is "refreshing", and the second "casual"... I´ve never seen someone talking like this about wines. Here in Portugal tasting wines is something that can be frightening... i believe that tasting wines is something too share with friends and family, like Gary says. As for his passion for Portuguese wines, well we have that in common. And Ryan, you and Gabriella are making an excelent work, talking about our wines, and trying to wake up portuguese wineries for this fantastic moment to get people to know their wines. I´m with you guys, and i believe that we can make the diference, making wineries to have their own blogs, to spread information about their wines... is the only way to win!

Ryan, you are absolutely correct. In fact as you know, my strugle here in Portugal has been the same. No doubt that wineries can improve their results and build a brand using intensivly the internet!!! But how can we make them see that they are losing to much time, and that other countries have already discovered this fantastic tool? How to make someone see this, if i am now waiting for a week now, for a simple information of the percentages on the grapes, to get labels approved in the USA??? This is frustrating! That´s why i think that you idea of promoting a conference here in Portugal, would be a great idea and a big help fr all of us that everyday work hard to spread the word on the fantastic wines that Portugal has...

Michael you are so right! One of the big problems here in Portugal, is that people are still very close minded! The internet is still a relatively unknown tool for the most part of the guy´s who decide the businesses in the wineries os wine companies. How to change this? Believe me i dont know... What i knoe is that we need a strategy, and the people that depends on this industry got to open their eyes to this tool, if not we will have a real crisis in the next years. The critics reviews are great, th wines are great to, but without a strategy to build a brand we will not be able to get there! At Vinixá our goal is to be different even on that point, and although we are still very young on the industry, and we are a little short on the advertising budget, we are trying hard to become one of the front guy´s. From your end we need to believe in us, and help us on the US market to spread also the word on our wines. Together we can make things hapend, in spight of all crisis and closed minds...

In fact, what i´ve learned since than its so important for me, just as the rest that i´ve learned the rest of my life. I am not exagerating, because that´s what i feel everyday. Our connection is a strong one, i believe in your projects, and i want to be a part of them to. I also believe that are many things to do, and i feel like an explorer on a totally virgin land... I wish you both the best ff luck in all your projects, and please count on me for everything that i can help you with. It would be a priviliege for me! Congratulations, the design is very actrative, and the organization is evem better than before. As you well say, wine is much more than a drink, it makes part of the iberian culture, is within our hearts, and have lived with us from our childhood until now. So thank you for all that you two have done for iberian wine, in my case for portuguese wines. Your perspective gave me a new motivation and changed my life. I´ll keep my attention focused on Catavino.net (as allways), and try to help make this Anthem to good Iberian Wines even better!

Honestly Ryan, i believe that the issue here is the threat that bloggers mean to this so called wine critics. We know that to be independent is the main thing and possibly the common characteristic among wine (and other) bloggers... So the freedom of making our comments about some wine we BOUGHT somewhere, is something amazing for us wine lovers! Its too bad that people like this critic don´t understand the final goal of blogging, and for me that only show one thing, they are feeling exceeded by the reality of the wine industry! Keep bringing us all your comments and tasting notes! And remember like Pink Floyd say´s "Together we stand, devided we fall..."

Caro Miguel,

Antes de mais, agradeço muito o seu comentário. É sinal que afinal alguém lê esta página, o que muito me honra. Em primeiro lugar, obviamente que uma opinião ou um artigo publicado em qualquer blogue, é antes de mais uma opinião pessoal. Não quero, e nunca terei a pretensão de saber mais ou menos que outros aficionados de vinho. Aquilo que pretendemos na Catavino, é tentar que a visão de cada um seja passada e partilhada, para que os leitores da língua Portuguesa possam também absorver essa experiência. Julgo que consegui com este meu artigo, "abanar" um pouco o panorama bloguista português, o que por si só já valeu a pena. Quanto aos conteúdos publicados neste blogue, eles são objecto de um estudo prévio, e temos uma orientação muito precisa de não favorecermos ninguém comercialmente, e finalmente de trazer assuntos de interesse variado, que girem à volta do mundo dos vinhos. Não queremos com isto dizer que, os blogues que se dedicam a publicar notas de prova sejam monótonos, aquilo que dizemos é bem diferente. "Alguns blogues" são monótonos na sua cadência repititiva, isso sim,mas claro que é apenas a nossa opinião, nada mais.
Para terminar queria dizer-lhe que também eu tenho outra ocupação para além do vinho, e portanto aquilo que escrevo é por pura "carolice"! Portanto agradeço uma vez mais o seu comentário, e os seus reparos obviamente que serão considerados, como serão os de todos que nos queiram transmitir a sua opinião. Mas acredite que continuaremos firmes no nosso objectivo de encontrar conteúdos que estejam de acordo com a nossa forma de ver o mundo do vinho.

Agradeço os seus comentários. Gostaria de lhe responder, antes de mais para lhe dizer que não há nenhuma inveja da minha parte, nem da equipa da Catavino em relação ao seu blogue, que aliás é um dos que seguimos com bastante interesse. Apenas e tão somente deixamos aquilo que é a nossa visão, com o intuito de tentarmos partilhar cada vez mais as nossas experiências com os cada vez mais numerosos leitores deste tipo de blogues. Lamento imenso se considerou o nosso post monótono, acredite que não foi nossa intenção ofender quem faz disto uma forma de partilhar emoções e opiniões. Longe de nós qualquer intenção desse tipo! No entanto, julgo que nos fará o favor de permitir que tenhamos a nossa opinião, sobre aquilo que os nossos leitores poderão considerar como interessante. Quanto à sua ideia de partilharmos um blogue com histórias sobre viagens, vamos a isso! Estarei receptivo a colaborar!
Em relação aos leitores quererem saber se um vinho é ou não de qualidade, claramente julgamos que essa poderá ser a sua primeira preocupação, julgo que isso é perfeitamente lógico. A função daqueles que gostam de vinho, e que com a sua experiência vão "ajudando" a formar também a opinião de outros, é muito válida, e acredite que temos muito respeito por essas opiniões. No entanto também gostaríamos que se falasse por exemplo um pouco mais das pessoas por detrás dos vinhos, ou da história de certo produtor ou região, particularidades que por pouco interessantes que possam parecer, por vezes conseguem por si próprias prender a atenção do leitor. As novas ferramentas sociais são também por exemplo um bom assunto para trazer! Afinal o que somos nós senão amantes de vinho que utilizam essas novas ferramentas para espalhar aquilo que sentimos?!
Para terminar, e uma vez mais, gostaria que também aceitasse a nossa opinião, e já agora por favor continue a ler o nosso blogue.

O Copo de 3 é efectivamente um dos blogues que gosto de seguir! Isto sem qualquer tipo de favor!
Aquilo que pretendi foi apenas expressar a minha opinião antes de mais como leitor de blogues, apaixonado do vinho e de tudo o que gira à sua volta. O facto de podermos expressar a nossa opinião de forma livre, é por si só um achado. Aquilo que pretendi foi que pudéssemos partilhar se calhar mais experiências, e não "apenas" as notas de prova. Concerteza o João tem noção, pela experiência que já tem, que de facto existem espaços que muito dificilmente conseguem cativar a atenção dos leitores. E é claro que os nossos leitores são fundamentais para nos motivar e fazer seguir partilhando as nossas opiniões, que nada mais são que isso mesmo.
Espero que me faça o favor de me ir seguindo de vez em quando neste espaço, como aliás faço com o seu, com muito agrado!

Obrigado pelo seu comentário, que considero pleno de maturidade bloguista e muito construtivo. Foi exactamente isso que pretendi quando expressei a minha opinião neste espaço. É verdade que o fundamental é que as pessoas saibam qual a nossa opinião sobre um determinado vinho, afinal de contas queremos ser diferentes dos críticos profissionais! Não quis fazer nenhuma comparação com críticos profissionais, apenas achei o assunto interessante, nada mais. E com toda a liberdade que este espaço me permite, pensei partilhá-lo com quem quisesse fazê-lo, apenas isso. Em relação a tentar perceber aquilo que os nossos leitores gostam mais nos conteúdos, seria uma excelente ideia pormos toda a gente a dar-nos a sua opinião. Afinal aquilo que procuramos é no fundo que as pessoas se sintam ligadas à nossa escrita e à nossa opinião. Em relação ao panorama internacional, acredite que com a pouca experiência que tenho nestas andanças, me parece que também existe uma certa repetição de conteúdos. Se calhar precisamos todos de ser mais unidos, partilhar ideias, e então aí poderemos tornar todos os nossos blogues mais interessantes... eu estou aberto a sugestões!

Olá Nadia, na verdade há um enorme trabalho a fazer para trazer os jovens para o mundo dos vinhos. Aqui em Portugal nomeadamente há muito a ideia de que o vinho é apenas para pessoas entendidas, e que os restantes são "obrigados" a beber algo com "nome", porque ouviram dizer que era bom... mas é importante que os produtores se preocupem em fazer chegar aos seus potenciais clientes uma ideia de normalidade e de divulgação, sem compromissos de qualquer espécie. Continuo a achar que se fazem pouquíssimas feiras em Portugal, isso ajudaria a divulgar muito mais os nossos vinhos. Outra coisa que já existe noutros países, nomeadamente nos EUA, são empresas que têm como serviço elaborar "wine parties" em casa dos clientes, onde se fazem essas provas cegas... fantástico, não?! Temos de avançar, mas aos poucos as mentalidades vão mudando, e nós havemos de chegar lá. O Douro por exemplo está pleno de gente jovem, como a vossa equipa, e estou convencido que vamos todos juntos mudar o panorama do vinho em Portugal... contem comigo!
