You have a unique audience, in that they're not in the echo-chamber (probably don't know it exists) but are genuinely interested in this topic.

Don't let the naysayers tell you this isn't a valuable position. You have a unique audience, not replicated by other bloggers. Lately there has been some critique about this, but I just hope you stay on the path of educating the non-koolaid drinkers and ignoring (rather not-servicing) the TechCrunch crowd. I wonder how the performance of regional VC firms stack up against that of sector VC firms. Here in Cincinnati (I'm in the airport heading back to NYC as I read this), a lot of our shops have a regional bent. Case in point: I have one friend who knows restaurants really well, and her recommendation means 100X that of some Joe on Yelp (whose review is nearly valueless to me).

That sentiment makes a lot of sense, and I think it can be said for all types of content. Getting the perfect amount of input from the global community and the best input from your community is what it's all about. That's about 1/3rd the power of BricaBox.

Re: A Birthday Gift To My Feed Readers

Fred, I use NewsFire on my Mac and subscribe to your Feedburner feed (of course) and did not see the comments in the feed. Have you ever played around with their service? You can clip images you like, videos you like, text you like. Now think about doing that for ads (which are either images, videos or text).

Point is, it's not very clear to me why I'm going to "vote" on an ad. But clipping an ad makes sense: Because I like it! Because I want to share it! Because I want a searchable history of ad I like.

Re: The Community Water Cooler

1. Not really! about the Valley Wag comparison. More like Paid Content for NY. I just don't think Valley Wag has anyone on staff who has looked at a 10Q before.
3. Yeah... kinda! about the name. "Insider" is a good fix for it.
4. I'd love to hear about their RSS and email metrics. There are so many amazing organization out there who are aggregating information, data, and insight into the non-profit/public good sector. But what a luxury we on this side of the aisle! That this is how we have to pick from a list of winners is a blessing. One of the reasons I've only donated to Edwards so far is because he's also a guys who has failed and learned from his failures in really public-serving ways (the other reason is because he's an underdog-front-runner). What I mean by that is that Edwards' fall was caused by over-politicking. He came back and left politicking (as much as he could) on the curb. I guess this is my one hesitancy with HC. Sometimes she seems not to have *really* learned things. You can believe she's been though tough sh*t -- easily. But that she's learned much from it is not easy to see.

But again, what a luxury we have that these are the ways we're separating the great candidates from the also-great.

Re: What To Say To A Roomful of CTOs

Very important, this point.

I CTO is responsible for the technical direction of the company. Sure a VC (as Fred alludes to) may want to join in a seed stage round, but even then, if you really need more money than an angel can give you, go find the next best angel in your field to take money from. Don't settle on a logo early and don't let someone outside the company do it. Yes, you need a better one -- and fairly soon ;-) but don't lock yourself in and don't lock your eventual full-time designer out of the process.

2. Don't distract the people you're "fortunate enough" to have paying attention to this endeavor. You're openness in this process is a real chance to get input on the nitty gritty details of development -- get developers debating code on your blog, and business folks adjusting your pitch -- and having people distracted by the sponsors of your start-up I think is distracting.

Re: An Idea: The Sponsored Startup

PS: Sorry, that was a lot of "Don'ts" at second glance. You're right that New York is how it is so if you want to compete you have to be bigger, stronger, tougher, smarter, and more -- well -- New York.

Where you fail is offering any ideas as to how we can compensate for these challenges. After all our "competition" is in easier cities (even if they're more like lottery tickets to our 401ks, lotto can still win big).

It's my opinion that we can tackle these problems by centralizing ourselves and our information. The more we do this, the better off we are, even with the challenges of NYC.

Re: Guess our Founder's Club invites got lost in the mail... happens all the time.

Don't worry - I wasn't invited either. I don't think it's totally necessary to self-promote (I haven't, for instance) but I do think it's important promote, and as you said, some people just don't know other people. While I was in Miami for FOWA, I tested this elevator pitch out with people and it had a great success rate. Like some of my other pitches it struck a chord with some and didn't with others. Even yours is a little abstract, so you have to find the right level of abstraction for the audience member (some people really get my BricaBox is to social content as ning is to social networks analogy).

However, the grandmother pitch, as Andrew puts it, is around the individual solutions like "Restaurant Review Site" or "Photos with maps." Your grandma never has to know what our vision and platform strategy is, so making a pitch for her is pointless.

Re: BricaBox: Create Your Own Social Content Site

Thanks for the review. Women, then, end up sharing information, stories, etc, of being a mother. And, while mothering is a similar experience to being a father, there are some practical reasons to share information just as mothers ("Which breast pump chafes the least?" is a too easy example).

Now, of course there's much more to being a woman than the possible designation of "mother," and BlogHer is there to cover that too (only 58% of their readers are mothers).

But, regardless of the identity and the role they're playing in society, I generally have no object to coming together in self-identified groups and talking about common issues of that identity.

Would it be a bad idea for Jewish bloggers to meet and talk about Jewish issues? No. Just don't meet about other stuff and use Judaism to leave people out.

In this sense, BlogHer is a win for me. Women's issues are discussed by women who self identify as women bloggers. Now, if that energy was direct to other activities (i.e. singling you out for NOT being there --- "traitor!") then I'd feel differently.

But no. BlogHer seems to be largely productive and inclusive. Can't ask for much more from a group lead, fundamentally, by identity. All too often that's not the case.

Re: Wine Library TV Party At De Loach Vineyards In Santa Rosa

Oh I so wish I could have been there! @verygreenteam FTW!

Re: Is Twitter Worth $1 Billion?

One of the smarter conclusions which has come out of the discussion about my post is the idea that PayPal wake up and build something on top of Twitter. I'm green because it's been my favorite color my entire life. I had a green sweater i wore to shreds. I would have killed for a forest green Honda Passport when it came out in 1993 and I was 10 years old. My rain jacket is green. I cry when my wallet is out of green. I love the forest because it is green. I love mowing my farm's lawn in Ohio because it smells better than any other green in the world.

I AM @verygreenteam !

Re: Gary Vaynerchuk - Better than Zero

I'm realizing that my post was more a rant about what's been built on top of the service. I realize that the beauty is the the simplicity -- Kyle articulates this well in his post -- but I have been thoroughly unimpressed with the services built on top of Twitter. Is a Technorati and Techmeme clone the best we can get? [hashtags and twittermeme, respectively.] The other day, the Freebase community manager sent out an email on the list asking, "Who's stuck?" I took that to mean, why aren't you people making cooler stuff with our API, and how can we help from our end. I'm not on Twitter's email list like you are, but I imagine they need to be kicking more developers in the ass to make cool shit. I see the big vision for Twitter, I just don't see it being played out anywhere. All of your examples of how you use Twitter and the same as mine -- breaking news, lifestreaming, and serendipity instigation -- but they haven't changed one bit in the last year. That's how we used Twitter a year ago. If this platform was as promising as we want to believe, I think there would be more built on top of the promise.

My 2 cents.

Re: Your problems aren’t what make you special, your solutions are.

Too much fun. I wonder how the performance of regional VC firms stack up against that of sector VC firms. Here in Cincinnati (I'm in the airport heading back to NYC as I read this), a lot of our shops have a regional bent. Therefore, performance relative to other firms in general is weighted or lifted by the local economy. Though USV is a sector-oriented firm, you still cull most of your deals from NYC, it seems, so aren't you also affected by the New York tech economy? Aren't there a lot of external factors here?

Re: Tumblr

Great post Andrew.
