in Rant: Coworking vs. Incubator on Alex Hillman Writes Here
Who has an identity crisis? Seriously?

I love coworking but run an incubator. That makes my incubator that much more community oriented. I'm sure if I ran a coworking space and loved deliberate business incubation as much as I do my coworking space would benefit from it was well.

This is sooo true. Some folks came to my office yesterday telling me about a video series they wanted to do sometime "next year." I showed them directions to the BestBuy down the street, told them to buy a Flip and post their first video today.

Absolutely. Sticky Rice (next door to Roasting Plant) has great Thai food. The Tunisian place next door is also very good.

in Has/How/Why tech blogging has failed you on Scobleizer
Thoughtful post, Robert.

I agree with much of what you're saying, but wouldn't be so hard on most of the top bloggers, including yourself.

a) Everyone has trouble dealing with success at first, especially when it's been brought from the bottom up. How do you remain famous and down to earth!? It's tough.

b) The last four years have been the social bubble. Noise. Noise. Noise... and I'm not talking economics and companies -- I'm talking social interaction wise, with the "tech set." This will mellow out (though we'll always, due to our closeness with innovation, be a little hyped up in this area).

in I Am Not A Woman Blogger on Pleasure and Pain
Ahh the wonders of Identity Politics.

Is the "Woman _______" identifier a political, organizational, practical , socially impressed suffix?

BlogHer is, of course, much more a "moms blog" network than a "woman" blogger network (Parenting is their focus in ad sales materials, you'll find). Women, then, end up sharing information, stories, etc, of being a mother. And, while mothering is a similar experience to being a father, there are some practical reasons to share information just as mothers ("Which breast pump chafes the least?" is a too easy example).

Now, of course there's much more to being a woman than the possible designation of "mother," and BlogHer is there to cover that too (only 58% of their readers are mothers).

But, regardless of the identity and the role they're playing in society, I generally have no object to coming together in self-identified groups and talking about common issues of that identity.

Would it be a bad idea for Jewish bloggers to meet and talk about Jewish issues? No. Just don't meet about other stuff and use Judaism to leave people out.

In this sense, BlogHer is a win for me. Women's issues are discussed by women who self identify as women bloggers. Now, if that energy was direct to other activities (i.e. singling you out for NOT being there --- "traitor!") then I'd feel differently.

But no. BlogHer seems to be largely productive and inclusive. Can't ask for much more from a group lead, fundamentally, by identity. All too often that's not the case.

in Is Twitter Worth $1 Billion? on Social Times
One of the smarter conclusions which has come out of the discussion about my post is the idea that PayPal wake up and build something on top of Twitter. I think the talk about Twitter's reliability is a valid one, but I state early in my post that the reliability issue is a constant for me. They either will or they won't fix things in the end. Clearly they can't proceed on any plan without fixing the most fundamental issues.

Good discussion though!

Congrats to the Summize team. Worth noting, of course, that Ken Leher is a very active investor in both companies (former CEO of HuffyP and investor in BetaWorks, where Summize was developed).

in What is “the news”? Good question on Mathew's comments
Matthew, I'm quite sympathetic to the pressures of modern journalism. But there's a difference between those who try to get it right and those who try to get it first. Those who get it right will win the long-run... I can prove it (and will in an up coming blog post). Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts on the matter -- and again, I'm sympathetic to these pressures, but I don't find any room for excuses for plain-old bad reporting, such as Riley's, in that sympathy.

You nail it bro. I'm green because it's been my favorite color my entire life. I had a green sweater i wore to shreds. I would have killed for a forest green Honda Passport when it came out in 1993 and I was 10 years old. My rain jacket is green. I cry when my wallet is out of green. I love the forest because it is green. I love mowing my farm's lawn in Ohio because it smells better than any other green in the world.

I AM @verygreenteam !
