in Iron Man Puts A Beatdown On Best Practices on the Alchemy of Soulful Work
You have sure jumpstarted the new year with a relevant post.
A hybrid of your ideas to BE UNIQUE is to partner with
(but, per your story, not overly rely upon)
another business or other organization
that serves the same kind of customers as you do
- using a method that enables you + your partner
to further differentiate from the competitors,
to each become the top-of-mind choice
in your mutual market
To prime the pump of SmartPartnering brainstormingfor your kind of business
here's three methods that have worked for others:
• Bundle product/services for a situational sale.
• Offer your biggest customers a gift (provide by your partner) and reciprocate with your partner
• Co-create a how-to tip sheet (that can also be an e-sheet, guest column, etc.)
Especially in a volatile economy where cash is king, it is wise to forge partnerships
to attract more warmed up customers while spending less.
BTW, what is the biggest way you are going to change how you do business this year, CB?

in The Relationships Of Our Life’s Work on the Alchemy of Soulful Work
What a thoughtful post and timely for me - thank you.
On top of (or beneath?) the multi-layered approach to "what is my job" and how do i balance my relationships around it is understanding the many people inside of us as Dr. Rita Carter discusses in the book Multiplicity.
The opportunity in this Age of Engagement (or whatever we are calling it now) is the ever increasing ease in finding the right partners and seeing templates for action that we can use to accomplish more together than alone. In short, we can get caught up in choosing between opportunities and the paths that result.

in Socialutions And The Social Media Pretenders on the Alchemy of Soulful Work
This post really resonated with me, having just come from speaking at a conference where the divide fell mostly along generational lines.
The older the attendee the more likely the remarks about "losing control" or, as Jordan so aptly cited, "“so, what’s our Facebook strategy?”
The younger the attendee the more likely they were to echo your message here. You, Chris, should be on one of the committees for the future of meetings that's been created over the past, well, decade within the groups/associations of leaders in the meeting industry...
... but you'd have to promise to not run out of the room screaming. At least the scene would probably not appear on YouTube. Today I wrote about TelePresence and meetings and my first response were not via comments but emails from 4 meeting planners.. . ah well.
No appropriate use of tech before its time... as determined by....?
Kudos, by the way on another good post

in Invest In Your Career Through Professional Associations on the Alchemy of Soulful Work
A follow-up notion, since you are obviously a savvy online user (having found Chris Bailey): in becoming active in that professional association you join, why not help it move more quickly to adopt social media tools to offer members (and exhibitors, sponsors and other stakeholders) more value and visibility. Here's more about why and how here

in Shelfari’s Breach Of Trust And What They Can Do on the Alchemy of Soulful Work
Thank you for speaking up for civility. As a former WSJ and NBC journalist I had it hammered into my head that if you gave the facts (well) the readers/viewers would use the indignant language. I agree about the BIG Shelfari goof... but when you throw mud you get dirty.
I have strong feelings about many of the actions of our U.S.government and intend to continue to shine a spotlight on the facts and the stories so others may choose to share my indignation
Kudos on a well-done blog!
In a civilization when love is
gone we turn to justice and when
justice is gone we turn to power
and when power is gone we
turn to violence.
Opportunity is often inconvenient.

Late night TV insomniacs are just one niche market he discovered.
He can find others by rewarding end-customers (who buy his mattresses) when they answer this key question for him:
“What other businesses do you use and love?”
He’ll find that certain business names keep coming up. Those are valuable potential partners.
He can approach those businesses about co-branding and other kinds of mutually-beneficial partnerships (product placement at their location, coop ads and/or coupons to the zip codes in their mutual market, etc).
Some of those business partners may merely display or otherwise introduce their customers to his products then get a fee while he bills and provides “fulfillment.” His mattresses can appear in more places where his competitors are not even in sight. In short, he can
With the right partners and methods both partners can gain a warmed-up introduction to each others’ customers. And he and his partners can enjoy more benefits by partnering
They can generate more visibility and value together.
More ways to stand out from the competition to become the top-of-mind choice in his market
More exposure and sales.
Less overhead.
More profits.

in After The Thrill Is Gone on the Alchemy of Soulful Work
Another factor is "context", that is how we see the situation and our chocies. That old "grass is greener" principle. The book Smart Choices has great insights into how we often fool ourselves when making decisions. One of the authors, Howard Raiffa, has been a hero of mine (re how we make choices) since college
