Now that some of us have it, is there anyway for Apple to go in and block it short of a new firmware specifically targetting it? (And the day they do, there are gonna be some ticked off people.)

If I see an update for NetShare, I'm gonna wait to see if it works for other people before upgrading it myself. Too suspicious that they'll turn it off.

Re: Did Nullriver slide the iPhone tethering app past the goalie?

Yeah, but my deal was that all these screw-ups seem to be happening in a row -- even Snow Leopard seems like pants -- and possibly at a time when Steve Jobs is more concerned about more important things in life. It's like they're going into the crapper without him.

And damnit, I'm so tempted to buy this since it's still showing up. Has anybody gotten it working with Windows yet? And if they yank it after I bought it, am I out the ten bones?

Re: Did Nullriver slide the iPhone tethering app past the goalie?

I personally think that Apple has done pretty good job, given all that has happened. People seem to forget that Apple has f*cked up many times in the past - as an article on Apple Matters suggests, the only difference is that now everybody cares - with the past screw-ups, not many cared, so it didn't make a huge Ka-Boom like this rollout has.

I'm biased though -I also love my iPhone. Wouldn't trade it for the world - could be I'm in honey-moon stage, but I doubt you'd get as amazing an internet, gaming, and software apps. experience on another devise. Have they done anything right this summer? Ridiculous customer service on launch day, followed by temporarily bricking old school iPhones, MobileMess, ridiculous iPhone NDA, iPhone store overrun by CRAP, white 3G iPhone covers already cracking, nosedive in stability and snappiness with the introduction of the 2.0 OS. I thought there was nowhere to go but up, but now Apple's yanking the best stuff being produced for it. Thanks!

Nevermind that the upgrade over the original iPhone itself was the worst combination of expensive + useless ever. Basically it's one feature, the 3G speed, and that's it -- enjoy your new data plan!

I don't know what the hell Steve Jobs has -- I wouldn't believe anything he says at this point -- but it definitely seems like whatever he's doing, it has nothing to do with paying attention to Apple's quality control. I'd say that it's shite, but I don't think that it actually exists at all anymore.

Re: Jobs entrusts NYT columnist with truth about his health, before Apple shareholders

Entrusts a NYT columnist with *what* truth? Does it rhyme with mole or moll? I'm assuming that the K is silent, but that's another thing that will hurt its uptake of recognition. Text on the iPhone and this are VERY similar. One is free, one isn't. When the browser open restrictions are removed with an App, I expect more and more people to use IM. It'll be a slow death, but I don't expect there to be texting in 10 years.

Re: Google Talk comes to the iPhone, death of the text message approaching?

I don't see this putting a dent in text messaging at all. I text someone, I know they get it, I don't have to wonder if they use IM or not, or if they just happen to have their browser open to that specific page -- how many people want to leave Safari open to the Gtalk page 24/7?

Meebo already offers a very nice IM client for the iPhone, one which includes the Gtalk, and I've used it to chat with people who were on Gtalk on their computers. But never once when I've been texting others that I know are using an iPhone have I thought, "Hey, let's stop texting and both log onto Meebo and continue our conversation there." It's just an inconvenience, I'd simply freaking CALL them before I bothered.

As far as the advantages of the Sprint Everything plan, you might get unlimited texts, but they also charge you 100 bucks a month. I already feel like I'm getting fleeced enough as it is moving to a 3G iPhone, paying another $15 per month. If I needed to pay another $25/month (or $600 over the course of my 2-year contract) on top of that, I'd just say forget it.

I imagine you're familiar with Meebo and its support for multiple IM services; does this iPhone version of Gtalk support this too, or just over Google's own network?

Re: Yahoo staffers clogging the exits

That's a fair point, er... n00b. There certainly aren't many signs of
creativity coming out of Yahoo, so maybe some of those people who are
leaving are no real loss -- but it's also possible that there's a lot
of ability inside the company that hasn't been able to make an impact.
Arguably they wouldn't have been able to do so under Microsoft
either, so better they leave now, I suppose.

Re: Yahoo staffers clogging the exits

Is there really any evidence that Microsoft wants the tech people at Yahoo? Maybe they just want to get some of their brands and do something with them before Yahoo can completely run any last bit of value into the ground?

What have Yahoo's technologists managed to do other than shed their own marketshare and buy hyped Web 2.0 companies? I actually subscribed with my credit card to Yahoo's music service; too bad it didn't actually work and Yahoo thought the best approach was to refund my money rather than lift a finger to even inquire as to what kind of error I was getting.

Maybe I just don't get why these people that Yahoo is letting go of (along with the ones leaving on their own) are suddenly hot properties, ones whose departure is decreasing the value of Yahoo and increasing the value of anyone who hires them. Yahoo's in a death spiral, largely due to technology, so where were these people to pull them out of it?

Re: Hey, Steve — you broke the Internet

Thanks, Stu. I get no gratification out of watching someone die. If I go in some gruesome way, I hope there are people out there who respect my earlier wishes or family wishes to not have it blasted all over the airwaves. Didn't see a compelling public interest in the desire of some to gawk over the autopsy photos of the guy who died racing in NASCAR a few years back, either.

And yeah, I do find being titillated over watching someone die to be extremely unsavory.

P.S.
