in Wolfram Alpha — it’s like plugging into an electronic brain on VentureBeat
How about an example showing that it's actually better than Google? I put the exact same query into Google -- "How many protons are in a hydrogen atom?" -- and it didn't merely "return documents that might contain the answer," it gave the answer to the question and provided its source.

Cute - now try searching for any other atom on the periodic table.

The problem with this talk is that only a small fraction of my Google use is to answer specific questions. Most of the time it's for finding other sites, references, open source software packages, procedural info such as a cooking recipe for preparing cornish hens or how to rip audio from a DVD, etc., what have you.
Meaning: the market for this is much, much smaller than Google.

in Google’s new years revolution: Six products slashed or maimed on VentureBeat
As far as Reader goes: It might cost less than YouTube, but that goes for everything killed last night as well. I'm sure it costs a lot more than Notebook.
I'm not too confident of its future. RSS/Atom just never caught on with people, and I don't think it ever will. People will continue to consume feeds using other products, like Facebook updates, but I don't see the public ever caring about feed aggregators as a standalone product. Hell, I haven't touched Reader in months, I'm more likely to check out Twinkle or Twitter Search or Techmeme.

Yeah but unlike some of those other ones it's growing and Google is actively developing it. Trust me, it's not dying anytime soon.

Sucks about Mashup Editor, I was just about to start digging into it, 'cause I built a service on top of Yahoo Pipes and was worried about *Yahoo* orphaning it because of their turmoil. Guess I'll have to check out Microsoft's Popfly as well and see if it can do the stuff I need.

Yeah I like Yahoo Pipes, and it seems like Google could have had an interesting entry in this field. Not sure why they never opened this beta up.

in Steve Jobs taking a leave of absence from Apple until this summer to address his health issues on VentureBeat
I'd like to know the whole truth with Apple, but isn't that a violation of Jobs's privacy and the doctor-patient confidentiality for his or your friend's doctor to be telling non-doctors about Jobs's condition?
Best wishes to your friend and to Jobs, though.

Whatever. You thought tablet PCs and Second Life were going to take over the world.
My only question is if you're in the tank for Apple because you own stock in the company, or if you're just one of the kool-ade brigade. 'Cause you sure seem desperate lately to pump Apple stock up.
I mean, it's pretty clear that your whole tale of Steve Jobs's yogurt vendor saying that he looks to be in perfect health was a steaming load of bullcrap, right?

in Steve Jobs — not on the deathbed — has hormonal imbalance, will remain CEO on VentureBeat
Goldman was misled by his Apple sources because he wanted to be misled by them. He exhibits exactly zero critical thinking about the information that he's being spoonfed -- which would include wondering why they chose him to be the gateway for their misinformation in the first place. Clearly it's because they know he'll swallow it up while attacking those who actually look at the situation logically and realistically, all under the high and mighty imprimatur of the CNBC brand.
As for Gizmodo vs. Goldman, I'd say Gizmodo was closer to the truth. They didn't say he was on his deathbed, they said "Steve's health is declining rapidly." I'm guessing that looking at him, it was a reasonable assumption to make. From Jobs's release, he says that he's been losing weight *throughout 2008*. Have we even seen him since June? He looked sickly then, and in his own words has been losing weight ever since then.
He says that it was only a few weeks ago that finding a solution became his top priority and he underwent further tests. Obviously a solution wasn't found right away, so more time has passed before a diagnosis was made and treatment begun. So it's pretty doubtful that there has yet been any significant improvement in his appearance, even if he is indeed on the road to recovery.
What of Scoble's yogurt vendor? It's pretty obvious that all that mess was bogus, too. Does that just drop off into the memory hole along with all the other obfuscations, and we take Apple at its word whenever they next deign to talk or leak to the media?

So now we know Apple lied to everyone AGAIN.
Dean, don't you feel somewhat gullible in that you seem to be taking Apple's new talking points as 100% truth? I might've missed it, but I didn't see even the slightest skepticism in your article.
C'mon guys, I'm not saying this as a slam -- I honestly do expect more from you and MG in your reporting on this matter. (Happy _Opening the Xbox_ owner here!) While Jim Goldman natters on as if he still had any credibility left, don't be like that guy.

Hey Stu - Does something like this bring up skepticism? Sure. But the fact of the matter is that Apple now on public record has laid out the issue and said flat out that Jobs knows that if he can no longer serve as CEO he would step down -- and that his health issues will not require that.
While Goldman seems to have been mislead by his Apple sources (in saying that health was not a factor), Gizmodo's story is still worse that Jobs was on his death bed (unless he's writing from his death bed which you can't believe is the case here). Reporting on health issues obviously isn't the easiest thing in the world for any tech blog, especially with so little info. In these cases, speculation can be very dangerous. We're just laying out what's out there.

Do people actually still try to use Voice Search in the Google app? My friends and I gave up on it over Thanksgiving, it was complete pants and gave us zero useful hits after about 15-20 minutes of trying.
A possible excuse was that it was confused because we were trying to look up stuff about "The Who", but whatever the reason, it was annoying.

in The many rumors of Apple’s final Macworld on VentureBeat
Jim Goldman and his "source" have no more credibility than anybody else's source. I'd say he has even less because of the way he tries to mislead his readers.
First Jobs's pullout was simply about "politics". No explanation for this, just "politics." If Apple itself is pulling out next year, but still sending someone this year, there's no reason for it not to be Jobs.
He tries to fool his readers with this "If Apple is lying about Jobs being fine, a lot of people could go to jail" load of bollocks. Well Jim, why do you think nobody from Apple will go on the record to say that nothing's wrong? If it turns out Jobs is sick, do you think Goldman will reveal his sources?
We all saw how Jobs looked. Apple's history of lying about this *on the record* has already been established -- think they'd have any qualms about doing it again when they don't even need to go on the record? There is no good political reason for Apple to pull Jobs from the show: You want to send the organizers a message? What for, this is your last one.
What does your brain tell you is more "iffy"? That Apple-worshipping Gizmondo is trying to drive Apple's stock down, or that Apple is obfuscating?

in Animoto’s iPhone app makes instant slideshows from your junky pictures on VentureBeat
Okay, this is the precise moment where the review falls apart:
"Everyone loves slideshows."
Dude. Now, in fairness, I liked yours, but I thought there was something hilarious about the upbeat rocking out and snazzy effects used for the display of a bunch of iPhone screenshots.
I do notice that iPhone advocates seem to be redefining the meaning of "video" lately. Screenshots + music are NOT video. I actually shot some real video -- with my iPhone -- of my dog running around the backyard just about 10 minutes before I saw these Animoto articles. Of course, I was able to because my iPhone is jailbroken, Lord Steve Jobs hasn't deigned to let you iPhone-owning peons record real video.
Is Arrington an investor in this company, 'cause I'm honestly surprised that someone could act so amazed at this crude app.

"Categories" does exactly what you're talking about folderwise. Just create however many you want and store all your crap in them. Available for jailbroken phones.
I rarely actually go into the folders, however, because it's so much quicker to navigate the iPhone with the previously mentioned QuickGold. It's quite fantastic.
I personally don't know how iPhone owners can get by without jailbreaking their phones, the built-in functionality is pants because of Apple's stupid, arbitrary limitations. At least the available functionality available via jailbreaking allows me to keep some shred of dignity whenever my phone geek friends see I have an iPhone. :)

Gore's remarks weren't taken out of context, MG, he was just caught in a lie.
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."
It's simply a blatant lie. Just because it was later framed for comedic purposes in snappier language doesn't suddenly make his original statement truthful. People should stop doing damage control for this guy, he's not even running for anything, and nobody sensible is going to pay for his self-serving, wasteful green ideas in this economy anyway.
