Dood - sounds like you had a PURGE! Not all bad, and something that is actually going to help you get more immune to the various bugs around the world. The only bummer is the time spent off your feet. Glad that you came through. Take good care on your travels and be careful with street food! The rest of your mainland SE Asian tour is going to befun to hear about! Expect the unexpected.
Cheers!

Go Gary! PNG rules and I am so glad that you have discovered the wonder! If you can make it up to the highlands, you will also make some amazing discoveries! Try outfitting a trip out of Goroka to some little village. I'd still recommend Haia, but I am seriously biased. Yu mas i go isi long PNG, tasol, em wanpela dripela hamimas long mi long harim nek bilong yu long internet blog. Yu wanpela longlong stret, brada bilong mi! Sapos yu laik harim sampela toktok long PNG na ol stori i ken go long yu nau. Lukaut long bikpela sinek tasol.

in Passport Blues on Everything Everywhere
Gare-Bear: I had the EXACT situation - but in Brisbane and after I found out I was screwed for a trip to Malaysia. So, I was a "rush-job" and it cost me $100USD and only 24 hrs and I had a new Passport. I, of course, always travel with three copies in three different places of everything I might need to get a new PP and lo and behold, it paid off. I'd recommend going to another city and doing it there. I really had no problems in Brissy.

in Sabah on Everything Everywhere
I'd suggest climbing Kinabalu - it's not that hard, it's a fun and beautiful hike, and if you have a bit of luck, it's an AMAZING view of the rest of SE Asia. Be on the loo-out for the many transitions of flora and fauna - especially the Nepenthes, or pitcher plants. If you get a chance, I would also strongly recommend going to the other side of the park and checking out both Poring Hot Springs and Mesilau where your chances of seeing mind-bending wildlife are quite high. Cheers!
