in Oh, Night Weaning...(A Parental Solicitation) on Weird Fishes
Wow, I'm scratching my head to remember the details. I certainly recall Carmen was sleeping through the night by the time she was onto solids.

I only have two pieces of advice. First, is be decisive. Carmen took to most transitions quickly, but not all. What we did was really commit and wear the pain, though with one or two thing it didn't work and we backed right off. What never seems to work for anyone is the try/not-try/try/not-try oscillation. I think Yoda was actually giving parenting advice when he said, "Do, or do not. There is no 'try.'

The second piece of Advice is read Gina Ford's The Contended Baby. Some parents really hate that book, but it worked for us and I didn't read anything clearer or more helpful...

carol howard merritt I nursed my daughter until she was two and a half (only at bedtime after she was one).

I was an attachment mom, waiting for her to wean herself, but she wasn't showing any signs of doing it, and I was beginning to resent it. So I finally gave up. I would snuggle with her and she had a bottle.

It was really hard at the time, but I don't regret it.

Nice review - looks like it might end up one of my favourite films of the year!

It looks very cool, but for me the stuff from Innotive in Sth Korea (highlighted on my blog last September), still has the edge, as well as the minority report cool.

This sort of thing has been on my mind a lot lately. I'm just not sure how to best address these patterns of "debate." Often there is a closed loop thing in play, so if we try to converse, if just confirms the negative claims.

Good thoughts. I have been reading a number of recent writings and blogposts on Christian ethics seeking to make the "effectiveness" case and you've helped me clarify a bit more of why i feel uncomfortable with that line of argument.
