Bennett's best recruiting job? Getting McDonald's All Star Brian Butch to redshirt his freshman year. If Bennett can land a 6' 11" center while telling him he'll be benched for the entire first season, he's one terrific recruiter. Honest, too. Butch has had a so-so career, but at the time, everyone wanted him, including Duke and IU.

butch had some serious family issues (I believe that his mom was battling cancer) when he redshirted on his own accord. That had nothing to do with Bennett
CoveyDale
yeah, that or maybe the fact that he handed alando tucker his only major D-I offer.

Who DOES govern the NCAA? Do they report to anyone? And don't say the schools themselves. The NCAA has so much power that any one school (or conference, for that matter) is too intimidated to stand up to them for fear of vindictive backlash.

You really struck a chord with this post BMD. Inside the Hall should have a separate story about the NCAA.

I just read that article on Beasley and it really made me think that Sampson got railroaded by the NCAA. I'm not a Sampson guy, I'm actually pretty excited about the chance to now get the right coach...But it sucks that all this will set the program back a few years.
Anyways, I just found this site a couple weeks ago, and it think it's great. I'll definitely keep checking it out daily.

Thanks, Matt J. The NCAA also uses examples like ours to keep other programs in line. They make it clear that they can and will wreck careers, cost coaches and schools millions - all while "enforcing" rules as they see fit. This is what happens when an organization has no competition. Wouldn't it be great if the IRS went after the NCAA? Now that is a steel cage match made in heaven.

Is it possible the NCAA people are getting paid off, too? Why else would they only investigate when it was convenient, but completely ignore what is obvious to everyone else? (And what about USC's football program with players ADMITTING they were paid? No investigation, no fines, hardly even any press. Just national championships to show for it.) Please, someone explain this to me. I'm serious.

Because when you're dealing with big money players (Bush, Beasley) or big money franchises (U$C), then the NCAA conveniently looks the other way. They make money off of the hype that surrounds these players with tv contracts, people attending their games, all that. They make money off USC being consistently good as they're reaping the benefits of no NFL franchise in LA.
Conversely, who gives a damn about Bloomington, IN? They're not making as much money off the Hoosiers as they are the other big money stars and teams, and so they'll come down hard on them.

in Devin Ebanks to Memphis? on Inside the Hall
I hope he at least meets with the new coach before making a decision. Who knows? It might even be a better fit now. If not, we part ways and all move on. I think he'd be terrific at IU, though, and have an outstanding career here before he moves on to the NBA.

in Hoosiers hang on at home against Ohio State, 72-69 on Inside the Hall
Does EJ remind anyone else of Shawn Respert? As a senior at Michigan State, the 195-pound guard averaged 25.6 points per game, and was a 1st team All American. His pro career fizzled after being the 8th pick in the draft. (PS: I hope EJ is an NBA all star - he's a great kid, and I'm very glad he's on our team.)

in Is Tony Bennett a viable candidate for IU? on Inside the Hall
Good points, DC. Now I know why he's not on anyone's top 10 list. I didn't know about the 44-73. Thanks.

Two things I've heard that make me believe Bennet won't be here: hard feelings in the family regarding his sister coaching here (true or not? anyone know?), and the fact that Bennet's father is a good friend of Bob Knight. Knight will gleefully disrupt things if he can. I had the same feeling when I heard that Sean May went to Knight for advice when deciding between IU and North Carolina. Anyone opinions? I'd love to be wrong, as I think Bennet would be terrific.

With respect, I believe us hoping for Thad is similar to Ohio State fans hoping for Knight to return to his school back in the 70's. The fallout from the boneheads who hired Davis will continue for a generation.

He should have been. And why isn't his name on anyone's top 10 list?

DC Hoosier
Having gone 44-73 in his last head coaching position at Houston (before being "reassigned") probably has something to do with it. He was successful at Ball St., though. Anyone know what happened to make him leave? Was the pull to leave his alma mater to coach Houston that strong?

in Dan Dakich on 670 the Score on Inside the Hall
In defense of Davis (can't believe I'm writing that), he was thrown to the wolves by a clueless IU administration. It was clear after 30 seconds that Davis was a poor speaker. He should have received training, with extensive role-playing, before he was anywhere near a microphone. Not that it would have helped his coaching or recruiting, but wow, was he a bad public speaker. And people at IU should have done something about that before they let him represent the university to the nation.

in Ebanks still a Hoosier - for now on Inside the Hall
Agreed. But before we even hire a coach, the IU President should call ALL the recruits, and their families. Jet out to see them, too. That would send a powerful message, and show great respect to the recruits and their parents.

Uh, I think the president has other stuff to worry about other than flying to NYC to see Devin. You know, like...being president of a major university.

I hope he starts the presser with a little joke, just to break the ice. "Thank you all for coming. Now I have an exciting AmWay presentation to show you . . ." That would make as much sense as what they're doing now.

in IU spokesman: Reports of firing untrue on Inside the Hall
What is the process with the NCAA? Are deals made in advance? Is there indeed "trading"? It's very confusing. Mostly, I get the impression that IU must bow before the almighty NCAA and keep flogging itself without any idea if the flogging is sufficient, or even too much. Is that the way it is? Or not? Insight from anyone would be much appreciated.
