What I'm NOT for is being TOLD/FORCED to use some material that may not be best... FOR THE PRODUCT.

All of this stuff is just getting out of hand. Take Toyota for instance and the Tacoma issue regarding high idling/shifting issues. Response from Toyota is basically that it's designed that way... not for any performance reasons, but because of the stupid EPA/government regulations. TOTAL Bacon Sandwich!

Actual response from Toyota:

By way of background, each year the government slightly tightens emissions standards so that vehicles emit less pollution.

Modern vehicles have a very sophisticated emissions system that only works when hot or warm. If the vehicle is cold, more emissions are produced.

The only way to heat the emissions components quickly up so they work properly is to run the engine faster when it is cold.

The government wants engines and emissions systems to warm up as soon as possible so the emissions control systems work efficiently as soon as possible after a cold start.

Two things the you will notice is the the engine will run fast when cold, (engine RPM higher) and shifting will be reduced, either to lock out overdrive, or keep the shifts from happening as normal until the emissions components are properly warmed.

Reducing shifts make sense, because when you shift, it reduces the engine speed, and prevents the warming process from happening as quickly.

By forcing the engine to stay in a lower gear longer, the engine turns faster and warms up more quickly than if it is allowed to shift normally as it does when it is warmed up.

Full text here: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacoma...

Re: 5,000 lbs of SolidWorks 2010 Ham Hot From the Oven

I practically have to wait 'til 5.1, since SW'10 breaks HyperShot functionality. It will be interesting to see how SW implements this; looks like it already is good, seeing you can customize them. How far do you have to "throw" the pointer to activate? NX, it's instantaneous, you don't even have to wait for the icon to pop up. Just click and throw.

Re: Put the Badgers Down. Biggest was when something was changed on a drawing (a weight, length, add config) and the model wouldn't get updated. Drove me nuts. Maybe I should have taken jowl kicking lessons.

Linking all that stuff to Custom Properties has alleviated a lot of that, until a bug crops up. Too often we are caught up in figuring it out, and getting projects done, that we don't take the time to document it so a) we can remember or refer to it later and b) benefit others in the organization. Hard to do sometimes, though.

Re: Slap You Face. I've tried similar programs, and it seems like there's a lot more manual effort involved to getting results you really want.

It looks like these guys have an innovative approach, although it looks like it will only work for one view of the object. Other programs, like PhotoModeler (http://www.photomodeler.com/index.htm) allow you to construct the model from all views/angles, but again, it is still a very involved process.

Cool stuff!

Re: 5 CAD/PLM Conspiracy Theories to Ponder and FEAR.

Ha! Seriously, I try to stay out of politics/social issues as much as possible, but that website just about had me taking the Louisville Slugger to the monitor.

Geez, when will the madness end? First, it was paper. No more paper sacks at the grocery store because we were killing the trees. Then no more plastic because it's bad for the landfills. Cloth is so "green". Next it will be stainless steel backpacks to carry the groceries home because the cloth manufacturing process emits too much CO2. Gimme a break. What exactly is the "carbon footprint" of manufacturing stainless steel sheet and turning it into formed containers? Not to mention the powder coating process... Hay chihuahua! I'm all for a cool looking, durable products, but don't feed me the rest of that bull.

It's only saving grace was the picture of the cute little girl. I remember our die casting supplier needing to further tweak our models to be CNC/mold ready. I tried my best to get them to teach me how do that so they wouldn't have to, but it would practically require me to become a master toolmaker in record time.

I guess if you have full control over the manufacturing process, and the expertise, you could really see the efficiencies of a 3D only data workflow.
