It's tough, because I personally feel there might still be something to the whole prayer thing (I see the articles you linked to clearly disagree), but I struggle with it because I see it so often be used as a cop-out for inaction.

Hey, I'm the guy with the Donate Blood Tumbling4Good post. You should double check about the Mad Cow thing. They used to have more stringent standards, but its always changing, so be sure to check again. I think you can even call them and ask.

Regarding the comic, I also agree with you that what we say and do as
role models has a FAR greater impact that a comic book. But I do think
that a comic book after comic book, after tv show, after magazine,
billboard, movie, music, etc, does also have a huge impact on the way
our children's view of the world are shaped, regardless of how active
and well intentioned their parents are.
And I certainly wouldn't describe it is "censoring every step". I have
a 2 and 3 year old, if I don't let them watch horror movies, that's
not censoring, it's making a conscious decision not to expose them to
things that don't align with our values. I probably won't let them
watch horror movies when they are 10 and 11 either, but I still
wouldn't call it "censoring". Censoring I think has more to do with
completely avoiding a subject or topic and trying to deny it exist.
Parent's decisions for their children (like a curfew or a bedtime or a
limit on their screen time) are not to avoid or deny their children of
things, but to create healthy boundaries for children to grow up to be
healthy adults.

(Hope these two comments didn't come across as harsh. I love the input
and feedback. thanks for sharing. And thanks for creating some healthy
dialog).

Hmmm....

I was referring to the Gates response quote, and I like the quote you
shared from Coding horror. At the same time, I really don't think
that's what Gandhi did. They didn't ignore the hate, but the reacted
non-violently and with love. They didn't give the hatred power, they
completely stripped it of it's power by not playing by the same rules.
But I don't think they ignored it.
Does that make sense?

Ha! I didn't link "ariahfine" with "trying to follow" in which case you were talking about an entirely different response! And indeed, when I first looked at that comic, the first thing I though of was my very strong, very in control mother (disregarding hair color of course!).

I guess that just goes to show how much effect we have on the next generation; we just have to have the fortitude to stand up for what we believe in -- which is to say: we need to believe in something; a trait sadly lacking in many of our generation(s).

What we say and do as role models has FAR more impact on developing youth than something they may come across in a comic book. If we give them the right lenses to focus their world, they can see clearly on their own terms and don't need censoring every step of the way.

Sometimes I don't entirely agree with what you post, but I sure am glad you post it! It may not mean much, but your posts are a nice breath of fresh air, always make me think, and are truly appreciated.

It was indeed my response, and might I say, I love internet coincidences.

When I posted that response, I was feeling something I didn't quite have a name for at the time; some frustration with the amount of time intelligent people were putting into an argument that was essentially, pardon the phrase, preaching to the choir.

Then just yesterday, mere hours before you posted this response, I found myself reading a post on Coding Horror (linked below) that contained this quote:

"The silent treatment was a punishment I didn't fully understand until years later in life. That's how you change the world. Not by arguing with people. Certainly not by screaming at them. You do it by ignoring them."

What I realized yesterday was that not only was that what I was feeling and trying to say, but also that that was all Gandhi was trying to say... don't be antagonistic, just don't give hatred power by reacting to it.
