It's not. When you die, all that made you you, dies with you. That's why if you damage a certain portion of your brain, you can have mood disorders, language issues, or even a complete personality change.

The science is pretty well fleshed out as to what effect psychoactive compounds have on re-uptake, etc, and how that affects mood. Your position seems to require creating a mystery that isn't really there, and presupposing an answer for it.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving everybody! We can never trust anything we discover, then, because in a few thousand years it may be found inaccurate.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving everybody! (Scripting News)

Well yeah, theres a number of paths that lead to at least a very strong inference that they are not capable of higher thought. First, evolutionarily speaking, there is no indication that any species has evolved that complex a theory of mind (outside of our own). There would be no reason to believe they would adapt that kind of capacity for thought, and lack any real application of it in nature. There has been some evidence that some bird species have a limited theory of mind, i.e. a knowledge of how they appear to predators. But that is about the extent of it.

Furthermore, we have a pretty good understanding of what physical portions of the brain is used for various types of thought (through fMRI). Birds, like all other species, lack the constructs required for complex abstract thought.

So we can infer their intelligence through behavior; infer through evolutionary evidence what would or would not be probable vis-a-vis their ability to think; and, using models of physical brain formations required for various higher types of thought, and fMRI's of the birds themselves, find their brain construction lacking.

Re: Happy Thanksgiving everybody! (Scripting News)

I'd have to disagree with the underlying message here. The physical mechanisms of consciousness have been pretty clearly proven. We may not understand ever aspect of what physical constructs give us our sense of self, but we are certain that the constructs are entirely physical.

Also, the metaphor of the bird is interesting; however, the bird is incapable of even asking the question "does a superior being exist?" We are not only capable, but are actively looking. This renders the metaphor...questionable. It would be more accurate if the bird was actively seeking out a superior species, and somehow missing us.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Re: HowTo: OPML for Twitter subscription lists

Hey Dave, wrote up a quick howto to get this on Friendfeed and searchable. http://andrew.leahey.org/ar...

Re: gina

With at least some South Jersey cred, I have never heard of anyone eating a bagel with all that mess on it. I don't believe for a moment the makers
of Airborne truly believe their product works; I believe there is, and has
been, intellectual dishonesty coming from their camp from the get-go.

Re: gina

Actually 4 times, love! =).
