in My new mission (Scripting News) on Scripting News
I don't know you. I don't hate you. You are a smart guy that has flaws. We all do. The main issue I have is that I do not believe you are as important as you think you are. You claim to have "pioneered" all sorts of things when in reality you *helped* pioneer or simply evangelized ideas that had existed long before you started talking about them. Just because you were one of the first to blog about something does not mean that individuals leveraging similar ideas should be indebted to you. If you personalize a sense of entitlement that is not deserved and treat criticism as personal attacks then don't be surprised when people get frustrated with you.
My advice, for what it's worth ... You need to get over this notion that someone disagreeing with you is standing in your way. If you feel that you have some new idea to contribute then you should clearly demonstrate how it is a new idea and not just declare it so and take ownership of it. When you feel that people with the power to change the status quo are not listening to you it's not productive to get bitter and lash out at them.

in Got a real-time ego problem? Get a room! on Scobleizer
I added some feeds generated from FriendFeed's search results to a couple of rooms but the FF landlords disabled the ability to do this back in September. I decided to work around this limitation by routing the FriendFeed search results feeds through my Google Reader account and adding that shared feed back into a room. It is just an experiment to amuse myself right now but I want to eventually enhance the room via the FF APIs when I find the time.
The room's feed consist of the videos (youtube & vimeo) added to FriendFeed by the people I am subscribed to on FF along with the videos added by their friends. I am subscribing to all the people that subscribe to this room so if anyone wants their videos (and those of their friends) to show up there, simply add yourself to the room ...
http://friendfeed.com/rooms/theater
I was pleasantly surprised by the entertainment value of the room's clips. If enough people join the room and start "liking" items in the room it should get even more interesting.

in Twitter: We Need Search By Authority on Loic Le Meur
Twitter and Google Search are different applications that serve different needs. Also, a follower in Twitter does not mean the same thing as a link to a web page.

The result of adding such an optional feature *would* be censorship. You don't see this because your perception is being influenced by what you want Twitter to be, a marketing tool to promote yourself and your businesses. A lot of people would not like to see Twitter go down this path. You should really be more specific when you qualify your posts with "we need".

I don't at all believe there is the same incentive to submit retractions or that people will forgive and forget. The Mumbai tragedy demonstrated this. False rumors persisted for days. The lack of accountability is also a problem. I suspect the CNN iReporter episode where Steve Jobs was reported to be gravely ill which in turn depressed Apple's stock price will be commonplace if many people start seeing social media as a reliable news source. It's very difficult to prove if that individual was trying to manipulate the market but the FTC was very interested in pursuing legal action against him. In your vision for the future of news reporting there is just too much opportunity for maliciousness. I am convinced that this and the spam issue will turn people off to social media as a news source before a tipping point is reached.

You will also have more scandals incorrectly reported by social media addicts craving for attention. Lives will be ruined just because someone that is looking to add more internet followers/friends wants to be first to report something to Twitter's echo chamber. There will also be tons of spam masquerading as news reports.

Scott, as I mentioned in the article, the rumors will spread, but as fast as
rumors spread so will the facts. The advantage to social media is that
majority always rules - rumors always get corrected quickly, much faster
than with old media. It's just the downside you get with little editing. I
think people are willing to forgive that for the most part.

I know the definition of amateur. There still needs to be someone to pay for the paper, the printers, the electricity, etc. I suspect that consumers will decide that this product is not worth the paper it is printed on.

in Hacking Education on A VC
Keep in mind that the needs of higher ed are different from the needs of K-12. In higher ed I would think that the publishing business model could be extended to lectures with professors working with editors from publishing houses. Replacing lectures with multimedia productions validated to be the most instructive material available would provide more time for office hours and lab work. In K-12 it is all about tools. I would like to see industry leaders sponsor and provide input on curricula and tools. Others might object to pre-roll ads inserted into educational video podcasts. As long as the sponsors are not evil I think ads could work at all education levels to identify the most effective types of courseware and the teachers that are best suited to present the material.

Very interesting, worthwhile discussion. A lot of different threads to unravel and work through. I don't have time to respond properly right now but some of you might be interested in the blog I wrote on 'creativity, innovation and the standards agenda' - http://generalpraxis.blogspot.com/2007/10/fifte... - (out of the UK context, but with some points that I think might easily apply to the US too) back in 2007.

I still say America! Fuck Yeah! and am voting for Obama. I believe the US has a lot of strengths that are not going away. There is also a lot of room for improvement too but I don't think Obama is going to be able to make much headway in reforming a government that is fueled by special interests and directed by lobbyists. The new boss is going to be pretty much the same as the old boss. I don't share your concerns regarding America's image, worry about its critics, or think that any other society should abandon its culture and adopt ours. I have a lot of Australian friends that I respect but I don't think Obama’s story could have been possible in Australia today. Racism is still too prevalent there.

Exactly how is the appstore akin to a free market? It's not. Apple, Target, Walgreens, Wal-mart: they all have total control on what they put on their shelves. If they miss out on something big, then they lose money.

You're off my leader board too. You are all over the place and I need efficiency. There is way too much noise to wade through to find any value within what you have been dishing out lately. You say that your audience is early adopters. I think you need to focus on early adopters within some specific slice(s) of the tech industry and go deep into the issues important to the people that live in those markets so that you can build an audience/community which is not so fragmented. Also, pimping whatever Winer is doing does not help your credibility.

@Dan: Apple has also stated that ...
"An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise."
This enables Jobs & co. to block all sorts of competition and potential innovation like third party browsers, Flash, Java, Silverlight, and any app that supports plug-ins. I'd be very surprised to see any third party app available in the iTunes App Store that competes with functionality present in the iTunes application.
As it stands Mozilla is not planning to bring Firefox to the iPhone ...

Imagine if Bill Gates did not allow Firefox to run on Windows. That is the control Steve Jobs has with the iTunes App Store's terms of service. The community behind Android will have no trouble out innovating Apple's crippled platform.

No offense but your Firefox on Windows comparison is just ridiculous. Windows is still proprietary just as much as Mac OS X is. Yes Mobile OS X is slightly more limited by using the iTunes App Store but the only things that Jobs has specifically stated won't be allowed are apps along the lines of malicious ware and pornography. Unless I'm missing something an iPhone version of Firefox could even be developed and sold through the iTunes App Store! They aren't blocking competition, merely providing their own store for it to be sold through (with a good deal too!).

What problem is the Mesh trying to solve? Mary Jo mentions something about it being good for sharing photos. It looks to me to be a re-packaging of .Net. Microsoft keeps wanting to redefine the web using kind of similar terms. They are running out of options.

in Could Facebook Out Open Everyone? on AllFacebook
If Facebook users do not "have complete ownership of their social graph" then Facebook will not be able to "out open everyone" and a competitor will surely come along and clearly demonstrate why the Facebook silo is a wannabe evil empire.
I see a future of federated social micro-networks where quality wins out over quantity. I sense that most people want to have control over their social networks but Facebook appears to believe that we want to have our lives managed by Facebook. Their arrogance is disturbing.

I had a similar issue when upgrading my 17" MacBook Pro to OS X 10.4.11. However, the solution appeared to be to plug in an ethernet cable after the install and before the reboot. When I tried to startup in safe mode with only wifi access to the net I repeatedly had no luck getting the desktop to show up.

iterated it based on user feedback. The stuff that I claimed to have
pioneered is stuff that I was doing that no one had done before. So you're
wrong, but thanks for the comment anyway.
